„America is not Canada, and Canada never, ever will be part of America in any way, shape or form,“ said incoming Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney.
Several critics of Donald Trump have celebrated a speech by incoming Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney that takes aim at Trump multiple times. Why It Matters
Tensions are currently high between the U.S. and Canada, as Trump has repeatedly threatened Canada with tariffs since taking office in January and implemented some of these.
Carney, the banking executive who Canada’s Liberal Party has selected to take over from Prime Minister Justin Trudeau at least until Canada’s next general election later this year, will handle trade and tariff talks with Trump.
The president has also repeatedly talked about his desire to make Canada part of the United States, but the idea has been roundly rejected by Canada’s Liberal and Conservative parties. What To Know
Carney addressed tensions with Trump several times in his victory speech on Sunday, saying: „Donald Trump, as we know, has put…unjustified tariffs on what we build on what we sell, on how we make a living. He’s attacking Canadian families, workers and businesses, and we cannot let him succeed, and we won’t.“
Later on, Carney said: „A person who worships at the altar of Donald Trump will kneel before him, not stand up to him.“
Democrat Harry Sisson, who frequently posts criticisms of Trump and other conservatives, quoted Carney saying: „These are dark days, dark days brought on by a country we can no longer trust.“
Sisson wrote: „Canada’s incoming Prime Minister, Mark Carney, just put Donald Trump in his place shortly after being selected by the Liberal Party.
