The president defended some vaccines during a press conference on Friday, saying „They just pure and simple work.“
President Donald Trump signaled reservations about Florida’s plan to eliminate all state vaccine mandates during a press conference in the Oval Office Friday, telling reporters that some vaccines are „so amazing.“Why It Matters
If successful, Florida would become the first state to eliminate a broad range of vaccine requirements for children. At present, state rules require immunizations against measles, chickenpox, hepatitis B, DTaP, polio and other diseases for childcare and public school attendance, according to the state’s Department of Health’s website.
Florida Governor Ron DeSantis recently unveiled a new state-level „Make America Healthy Again“ commission, modeled after initiatives promoted at the federal level by Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. The governor said the commission would help guide a forthcoming „medical freedom package“ in the Legislature that would address vaccine mandates and other health regulations.
DeSantis has long styled the Sunshine State as a counterweight to federal public health directives. During the COVID-19 pandemic, his administration resisted imposing vaccine requirements for schoolchildren, banning vaccine „passports“ at businesses and venues, and opposing workplace mandates.
Trump’s comments underscore a break with DeSantis and Kennedy Jr., two of Trump’s ardent supporters. What To Know
DeSantis and Florida Surgeon General Dr. Joseph Ladapo announced their plan to remove vaccine mandates statewide earlier this week.
