German police shot a man who was “rampaging” around Berlin Cathedral with a knife and had attacked at least one person, according to reports.
Police said officers rushed to the scene after a staffer at the Berliner Dom, a major tourist attraction in the heart of the German capital, called emergency services to report the incident.
Armed officers rushed to cordon off the entrances to the landmark.
Police said in a tweet: “Shortly after 4pm (2pm GMT) police shot at a rampaging man at Berlin cathedral. He was wounded in the leg.”
A local newspaper reported the suspect — a 53-year-old Austrian who was “verbally aggressive” — had attacked a man.
The police said the incident was not politically motivated.
“Based on what we know so far, we have no information that the suspect in any way had a terrorist or Islamist motive,” said a spokesman.
It’s unclear if anyone else was hurt in the incident at Berlin’s main Protestant cathedral, which is close to the Alexanderplatz shopping district.
