June 17 (UPI) — Almost 20 people were killed in a suicide bombing in Afghanistan on Sunday, the second such attack in as many days.
A suicide bomber attacked near a governor’s compound in Jalalabad, the capital city of the Nangarhar province, killing 18 people and injuring 45 more, Najibullah Kamawal, head of Nangarhar’s health department, said.
No group immediately claimed responsibility for the attack.
The bombing took place while Nangarhar’s governor, Hayatullah Hayat, was meeting Taliban members visiting the governor as part of its three-day Eid ceasefire set to end at midnight Sunday, according to CNN .
The three-day agreement was meant to work along with a 10-day ceasefire declared by the Afghan government for Eid al-Fitr, the celebration of the end of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan.
On Saturday, at least 26 people were killed in another suicide bombing in Nanggarhar. The Islamic State, which isn’t part of either ceasefire agreement, claimed responsibility for the attack.
