A male pedestrian was flown by helicopter to a hospital in critical condition.
LENAWEE COUNTY, MI – Police have identified a 19-year-old Mason woman who was killed Monday in a vehicle-pedestrian crash near Michigan International Speedway, the scene of the weekend Faster Horses festival.
Makayla Rae Hostetler died after being struck by a vehicle while walking north on Brooklyn Highway, north of U. S. 12, about 4:20 a.m. July 23, according to the Lenawee County Sheriff’s Office.
A male pedestrian who also was struck was flown by helicopter to a hospital in critical condition.
Police said a 17-year-old Adrian boy was driving the vehicle traveling north on Brooklyn Highway, which divides Woodstock and Cambridge townships.
Alcohol appears to have been a factor in the crash, according to the sheriff’s department. Both the driver and pedestrians were suspected of drinking, Lenawee County Undersheriff Troy Bevier told MLive on Monday.
The 17-year-old driver was not immediately arrested. His blood was drawn at the scene, Bevier said. He added it is not unusual police would seek a blood sample and later pursue charges.
The boy’s vehicle would have been impounded and he did not drive from the scene, Bevier said.
Investigators were working to determine whether the pedestrians were walking in the road or the vehicle crossed the fog line — the white line at the side of the road, police said.
The crash came after the Faster Horses Festival at Michigan International Speedway that lasted July 20-22. The undersheriff said Monday he wasn’t certain those involved attended the festival or camped in the area.
The 17-year-old boy and two others who were walking with Hostetler and the male pedestrian were not injured in the crash.
The crash remains under investigation, Bevier said.
A GoFundMe for Hostetler’s funeral costs has been set up. The account states Hostetler intended on attending Michigan State University this fall.
