iPhone XS, XS Max Launched With Up to 6.5-inch OLED Display, 512GB Storage, Dual-SIM; Price Starts at $999
The iPhone XS is a direct successor to the iPhone X from last year. It features an identical 5.8-inch display size as its predecessor, with 1125 x 2436 resolution. However, the Super Retina OLED display on the iPhone XS comes with a 120Hz touch frame rate and support for both Dolby Vision and HDR10 formats. Running under the hood is a 7nm Apple A12 6-core chipset with a total of 6.9 billion transistors. Apple is claiming a 15% improvement in performance and 40% improvement in power efficiency compared to last year’s A11. The chipset also integrates a next-gen Neural Engine.
In terms of optics, the iPhone XS uses dual 12MP sensors at the rear with the primary sensor coupled with an f/1.8 aperture and the secondary sensor paired with an f/2.4 aperture. While the basic camera specifications have not changed much, Apple is using a newer primary sensor with larger 1.4um pixel size. The iPhone XS comes with an updated Portrait Mode with Depth Control, allowing users to adjust the depth of field after a photo has been captured. For selfies, the device features a 7MP sensor on the front with an f/2.2 aperture, Smart HDR, Retina Flash, Portrait Lighting, and more. Some of the other highlights include improved stereo speakers, stereo audio while recording videos, IP68 certification, Qi wireless charging, and faster Face ID.
The iPhone XS Max has a significantly larger 6.5-inch OLED display with 1242 x 2688 pixel resolution. Just like the iPhone XS display, the iPhone XS Max comes with a 120Hz touch frame rate, 3D Touch, and covers the DCI-P3 color space. It is powered by the same A12 Bionic chip under the hood and comes in three storage variants – 64GB, 256GB, and 512GB. At the rear is a 12MP + 12MP dual-camera setup identical to the one on the iPhone XS. Unlike previous “Plus” models, the new iPhone XS Max does not have any advantage over the smaller iPhone X in the camera department. Both the iPhone XS and XS Max come in three colors – Gold, Space Grey, and Silver.
The most affordable new iPhone this year is the iPhone XR. It sports a 6.1-inch Liquid Retina IPS LCD display featuring 828 x 1792 pixel resolution and an iPhone X-style notch at the top. While the display does not come with HDR support, it does cover the DCI-P3 color space and has a contrast ratio of 1400:1. It lacks 3D Touch support as well. In terms of performance, however, the iPhone XR is equally as impressive as the more expensive iPhone XS and XS Max, thanks to the A12 Bionic chipset under the hood.

In terms of optics, the iPhone XR features a single 12MP rear camera with an f/1.8 aperture, optical image stabilization, Portrait mode with advanced bokeh and depth control, as well as Portrait Lighting. The front-facing camera is identical to the iPhone XS models, including the TrueDepth system for Face ID. Unlike its more expensive siblings, however, the iPhone XR comes with an aluminum and glass body. It also comes with an IP67 rating for dust and water resistance. The iPhone XR will be available in (PRODUCT) Red, Yellow, White, Coral, Black, and Blue colors.
