Disney CEO Bob Iger wants to hit the brakes a little bit when it comes to pumping out new “Star Wars” movies.
Iger told The Hollywood Reporter the following when discussing the future of the film franchise:
I made the timing decision, and as I look back, I think the mistake that I made — I take the blame — was a little too much, too fast. You can expect some slowdown, but that doesn’t mean we’re not going to make films. J. [Abrams] is busy making [Episode] IX. We have creative entities, including [Game of Thrones creators David] Benioff and [D. B.] Weiss, who are developing sagas of their own, which we haven’t been specific about. And we are just at the point where we’re going to start making decisions about what comes next after J. J.’s. But I think we’re going to be a little bit more careful about volume and timing. And the buck stops here on that.
I have a pretty strong feeling fans are going to be split on fewer movies being made than what has been cranked out these past few years.
You can pretty much boil everybody down into two groups. Some die-hard fans want as much “Star Wars” content as they can get their hands on. They’d be happy to get a new movie every single month. The other group is made up of die-hard fans that have had enough with a new movie ever nine to 12 months. This is the group that I’m firmly a part of. I love “Star Wars,” and I think what they’ve done with all these spinoffs is beyond stupid. Stick to the nine episodes that were planned, finish up that storyline and then we can get into some spinoffs. We don’t need it all at once. People might say that I’m wrong, but I’m absolutely 100 percent correct.
I’m glad that Iger has opened his eyes up a little bit and is slowing down. Trust me, it’s for the better.
