He died today at 95 and will be remembered for shaping and molding the childhoods of millions.
If there were ever a person who shaped and molded the childhoods of millions, it would be Stan Lee, who died today at 95.
His decades-long tenure at Marvel produced some of America’s most beloved comic book characters, including Spider-Man, the Hulk, Iron Man, Captain America and the Fantastic Four. Lee’s characters have become household names and the stars of countless blockbusters.
The comic book writer’s prolific career turned him into a household name, and his cameos in every Marvel film ensured that even the new generation of Marvel fans knew his name and face.
And he was working hard until the end. In 2001, Lee, along with Arthur Lieberman and Gill Champion, founded POW! Entertainment, a publicly traded production company, where he served as chairman and CCO. Champion is currently president and CEO.
In 2015, Adweek visited Lee’s office at POW!’s Beverly Hills, Calif., headquarters, where artifacts of his life and career filled every wall and corner. Champion summed it up best: “It’s like walking through a museum.” We were given an exclusive tour of his office, which showcased many of his most famous creations.
Here are some of the highlights:
Desk memos: Family pictures and small mementos like personalized bobblehead dolls line Lee’s desk.
Domestic bliss: Lee’s favorite items in his office are the photos of his wife, Joan, who he married in 1947.
Just games: The Spider-Man pinball machine, made in 1980, takes up a corner of Lee’s office.
A Warhol protege: Steve Kaufman, who was a student of Andy Warhol, painted this Lee/Spider-Man stare down.
Fab friends: Lee and Paul McCartney at the 2014 Super Bowl.
Action figures: Marvel characters big and small are prominently featured throughout Lee’s office.
Fan mail: Fans frequently display their affection by sending in art. Lee and POW! display as much as space permits.
Bookmark: Lee makes sure to keep around a copy of his 2010 book, How to Draw Comics the Marvel Way.
