Orlando Pride withdraws from NWSL Challenge Cup in Utah because of numerous COVID-19 positive results

HERRIMAN — As the National Women’s Soccer League readies to become the first professional league in the United States to resume play since March when the NWSL Challenge Cup begins Saturday in Herriman, it hit a major snag Monday afternoon.
The Orlando Pride announced their withdrawal from the tournament altogether because of positive coronavirus tests among players and staff. The NWSL said in an announcement that six players and four staff members within the club had tested positive for the virus.
NWSL commissioner Lisa Baird said in a statement that the tournament will still proceed, although a new schedule will have to be created since there will be eight teams competing instead of nine. The original plan was to have a preliminary round in which all nine teams would play four games and one would get eliminated before knockout rounds began.
