Apple’s iPhone SE is its most affordable smartphone to date. Priced at $399, it came out in 2020 with a quality camera, a good battery and fine processing performance. Now, two years later, the iPhone SE is due for an upgrade. Though we probably have a while before Apple unwraps the iPhone 14, rumor has it that the iPhone SE 3 could be much less of a wait. Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman predicts a virtual Apple event on or around March 8, which would unveil not only the iPhone SE 3 but also a new iPad Air. With recent reports suggesting the third-gen iPhone SE has been imported internationally for testing, this rumor’s got legs. In 2021, the iPhone SE was a no-show at the company’s April, September and October events. Instead, the tech giant showed off its new MacBook Pro models, AirPods 3, Apple Watch 7, iPad Mini 6 and updated entry-level iPad alongside the iPhone 13 lineup. A fresh new purple iPhone 12 also sent the internet into a modest frenzy when it was unveiled last year. Following Apple’s September event, the company removed the 256GB iPhone SE from its online store. MacRumors reported that the highest-storage option for the iPhone SE was discontinued, signaling that Apple was ramping down production of older iPhone models as new ones became available. The rumor mill is a persistent force, and it’s been dishing out details on what the iPhone SE 3 might look like. The third-gen version of the iPhone SE will likely appear in the first half of 2022, according to a research note from Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo. His rumored timeline was later echoed by a report from DigiTimes, which speculated the new 5G iPhone SE could be on its way with an updated A14 Bionic chip. Meanwhile, TrendForce had already narrowed the iPhone SE 3’s arrival to the first quarter of this year. In his PowerOn newsletter, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman tightened the window of the iPhone SE 3’s announcement to March or April before narrowing it to a date on or around March 8.
