Sunday’s news of a military jet shooting down an object over Lake Huron felt \
Alpena — It wasn’t a bird and, according to the Pentagon, it wasn’t a plane.
Whatever it was, the high-altitude airborne object shot down by a military fighter jet Sunday afternoon somewhere in the middle of Lake Huron has captured the attention of this quiet corner of northern Michigan, which isn’t accustomed to being in the international spotlight.
On Monday, Alpena residents were going about their business as the U.S. and Canadian coast guards were trying to locate the remnants of the octagon-shaped object that an F-16 fighter jet pilot shot out of the sky somewhere over the expanse of the third largest Great Lake.
Dave and Cathy Moore of Alpena are used to hearing their fair share of air traffic near their home — even National Guard training runs, at times — but the couple paused what they were doing Sunday afternoon when they heard air traffic that was louder than usual.
A bit later, Dave Moore’s sister called from Arizona to tell them to turn on the TV because there was another object shot down over Lake Huron.
“I saw CNN’s map and that arrow was pointing right at Thunder Bay,” Cathy Moore said about the national marine sanctuary right off the shore of the northeast Michigan city and Lake Huron.
