Thousands are dead, and many more injured following Friday night’s deadly earthquake which has devastated areas of the High Atlas mountains, about 72 kilometers (45 miles) southwest of Marrakech.
Of those injured well over a thousand are reported to be in critical condition.
Morocco’s National Institute of Geophysics measured the earthquake at magnitude 7.0, with the epicenter in Al Haouz Province. The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) said it was magnitude 6.8.
It struck at around 11:11pm local time on Friday night.
Rescue workers from the Moroccan army, police force and civil emergency services, together with the Moroccan Red Crescent were combing the affected areas on Sunday. Huge numbers of homes, and in some cases entire villages have been destroyed by the quake.
