TBS is taking another page from FX’s development slate.
The Turner-owned network announced Saturday at the Television Critics Association’s winter press tour that it has handed out a 10-episode series order to animated comedy The Cops.
The series, developed as a pilot for FX last January, was co-created and stars comedy heavyweights Louis C. K. and Albert Brooks, with The Office ’s Greg Daniels boarding the series with its move to TBS. The series is produced by FX Productions, with Turner’s Studio T coming on as a co-producer with the move to TBS. The series will debut in 2018 as animation typically requires a longer lead time. C. K.’s FX Productions-based Pig Newton banner will exec produce, giving the multihyphenate four shows (including FX’s Louie, Better Things and Baskets ). For Brooks, it marks the comedy legend’s first foray into scripted television.
Here’s how TBS describes the show: The Cops follows Al (Brooks) and Lou (C. K.), two Los Angeles patrolmen trying their best to protect and serve, sometimes failing at both. Ride with them as they patrol one of the biggest cities in the world, then go home with them and be glad you’re not married to either.
„We have made the bold decision to put Louis C. K., Albert Brooks and Greg Daniels at the forefront of what is going to be a serious push into animated comedy for TBS in 2018,“ said Brett Weitz, executive vp original programming at TBS. „I only hope these newbies know what they’re doing. “
Brooks, C. K. and Daniels exec produce alongside Dino Stamatopoulos (via Dan Harmon’s Starburns Industries banner), Dave Becky, Howard Klein and 3 Arts.
The Cops joins an animated slate at TBS that includes Fox import American Dad (now in its 12th season) as well as the upcoming dark comedy Tarantula — about residents at a seedy hotel — as well as interstellar comedy Final Space. The animated slate joins a roster of six freshman shows that were all launched and renewed for additional seasons in 2017: Angie Tribeca, The Detour, Wrecked, People of Earth, Search Party and Full Frontal With Samantha Bee. Next up for TBS is Greg Garcia’s comedic anthology The Guest Book.
The Cops marks the second comedy originally developed for FX that found a series home on Kevin Reilly-led TBS. The cable network last year went straight to series on an untitled Tracy Morgan family comedy created by Jordan Peele. Turner’s Studio T will now produce the comedy after moving the project over from FX Productions.
