Suburban rapper comedy Patti Cake$ is the latest film to spark a heated bidding war at Sundance. Sources say the film, fronted by newcomer Danielle Macdonald, has crossed the $10 million mark following its world premiere at the festival on Monday afternoon.
Fox Searchlight, Annapurna Pictures, The Orchard, Amazon and Neon are among those distributors who are in hot pursuit of the hip-hop inspired film.
Macdonald plays an aspiring rapper from New Jersey named Patricia “Killa P” Dombrowski in the film, which marks the feature directing debut of Geremy Jasper, who also wrote the screenplay.
Jasper is known for his edgy music videos for acts like Florence + The Machine and Selena Gomez.
Meanwhile, Australian actress Macdonald has quickly morphed into one of breakout stars of this year’s festival.
CAA and WME are negotiating the deal, which will come close to or possibly eclipse Saturday night’s deal for The Big Sick. Amazon paid $12 million for that film.
