Jay Cutler, cut by the Chicago Bears after eight years as their starter, will leave the game to become an analyst on Fox.
Cutler will work with Kevin Burkhardt and Charles Davis, Fox said .
“I started playing tackle football at age 10, ” Cutler said in a statement, “and was so lucky to have supportive parents and great coaches along the way.”
Cutler, 34, joins the longtime Cowboy Tony Romo as veteran quarterbacks who left the game this year to become broadcasters. Romo will be CBS’s lead analyst.
Cutler was drafted by the Rams, but he started his career with Denver, in 2006. He was traded in 2009 to the Bears for Kyle Orton and draft picks. He settled into many years of solid play for the Bears, but he could never seem to take the team over the hump, making only one playoff appearance, losing to the rival Packers in the conference championship in January 2011.
Cutler also never really endeared himself to Bears fans, many of whom full-throatedly called for his ouster for years.
Things turned particularly sour last year. Cutler, normally not injury prone, played only five games because of thumb and shoulder problems. Behind Brian Hoyer and Matt Barkley, the team sank to a 3-13 record, their worst since 1969.
While he had talks with several teams after being cut by the Bears, no team seemed eager to give him a starting job.
The Bears now face the post-Cutler era at quarterback. In the off-season, they signed the free agent Mike Glennon and also traded a significant draft pick package to move to No. 2 from No. 3 in the first round and take Mitch Trubisky of North Carolina.
