A new video reveals what could be Nokia’s new top-end Android phones. Read the latest rumours on the Nokia 8 and Nokia 9 UK release date, UK price, features and specifications.
A long-term Nokia employee has uploaded a video to the web that may have just outed the upcoming Nokia 8 and Nokia 9. The video pictures four Nokia Android phones, despite the company having officially unveiled only three, one of which has a dual-camera. Double confusion.
The company previously made its return to the mainstream mobile market in January with the then China-only Nokia 6, but it was at MWC 2017 at the end of February we got the news we were all waiting for: Nokia as a global brand was back, with four new phones that included three Androids and a throwback to the retro Nokia 3310 feature phone.
Those four phones each go on sale in 120 markets in Q2 2017, with Clove in the UK confirming the Nokia 3 and Nokia 5 will be available in May and the Nokia 6 in June, while the 3310 is officially out from 24 May.
These are budget- to mid-range smartphones, and while we’re very impressed, we’re more eager to hear about the upcoming flagships known as the Nokia 8 and Nokia 9 (jump straight to Nokia 8 and Nokia 9 rumours) . Could they launch on 2 June?
Once the biggest and best-known mobile phone manufacturer, following some tough competition from iPhone and Android Nokia in 2011 made the fatal mistake of agreeing to produce only Windows phones. In 2014 it packed up its mobile phone game and sold its business to Microsoft.
Fast-forward to 2017, and with Android onboard, this could be the Nokia comeback we’ve been waiting for.
It’s still not quite Nokia as we know it, since Finnish brand HMD Global currently owns the rights to develop, build and sell Nokia-branded phones – although it does so with Nokia’s input.
We’re still waiting to hear about official plans for any new Nokia Android tablets though.
It’s only a concept video, but the date shown on a phone’s screen has long been an indication of when it might launch. The date here: 2 June 2017.
The idea of a June launch date ties in with what we’ve heard elsewhere .
The Nokia 8 or Nokia 9 is what’s expected to be the upcoming Nokia flagship, which will run the Snapdragon 835 processor and launch after the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8 Plus (on sale 28 April) .
However, a tip-off suggests rather than it being a case of either/or, we could see both a Nokia 8 and a Nokia 9 with two flagship Nokia Android phone launches.
According to the source one of the two handsets will be a full metal unibody phone with dual cameras. The key difference between the two will be the size of the screen.
This is demonstrated by another leak reported by NokiaPowerUser that shows the Nokia 8 with dual cameras and a physical fingerprint reader, alongside drawings of the supposed Nokia 9, which loses the fingerprint sensor to the rear while sporting a near bezel-less design.
The Nokia 9 flagship is said to run Android Nougat and come with a 5.3in or 5.7in display with Gorilla Glass 5 and IP57 protection. As well as the aforementioned Snapdragon 835, it’s expected to get 6GB of RAM.
A Carl Zeiss 22.6Mp camera could be found at the rear, and a 3,500mAh battery with Quick Charge 4.0 inside.
Although the partnership between Zeiss and Nokia was thought to be no more, Nokia has confirmed it was talking only about its current range (the Nokia 3,5 and 6) when it said Nokia phones will not use Carl Zeiss optics. And that’s great news for the upcoming Nokia 8.
The new Nokia is thought to be priced at around $800 or £634 with 128GB of storage, and $950 or £753 with 256GB.
The newly tipped Nokia 9, which is alleged by Nokia Power User, might come with an iris scanner and fingerprint scanner, a 5.5in QHD OLED display, the Snapdragon 835 CPU and Adreno 540 GPU, 6GB of RAM, 64GB of storage, a 3,800mAh battery with Quick Charge 4.0, Nokia OZO audio enhancements, IP68 waterproofing, and 22Mp (Dual-Lens) rear- and 12Mp front cameras.
Nokia kicked off its MWC 2017 press conference talking about its Ozo camera and its acquisition of Withings, particularly with regards to what this means for the company’s portfolio, with smartwatches, fitness trackers and smart scales to begin carrying the Nokia name this summer. Which is great, but, we really just care about the phones. So on to the good stuff…
Check out our hands-on reviews of the Nokia 6, Nokia 5, Nokia 3 and Nokia 3310
Earlier this year Nokia announced its Nokia 150 feature phone and China-only Nokia 6 smartphone, with the latter selling out in just 23 seconds.
But Nokia wants to become the biggest smartphone player in the market worldwide. It is looking to the next chapter, and during its 26 February MWC 2017 event Nokia and partner HMD Global announced three new Android phones.
Interestingly, it was the non-Android Nokia 3310 that has been getting all the attention and, according to Carphone Warehouse, is breaking pre-registration records. And that’s despite the fact it can’t do either WhatsApp or Facebook.
Nokia Android phones are said to be different to rival Android phones in three main ways:
• Through Nokia’s relentless focus on the everyday experience, whether that is seen in the display or the camera
• Through its premium design and build quality that is present no matter where in the line-up a model sits
• Through its use of the purest version of Android you have seen, with monthly security updates, fast Android platform updates and the implementation of the Google Assistant across the range
The first phone announced by Nokia is one with which we’re already familiar, the previously China-only Nokia 6, which will now be going global at 229 Euros.
There will also be a Nokia 6 Arte Special Edition, which has a piano black gloss finish and more memory, and will retail at 299 Euros. It will be available globally in Q2 2017, and according to Clove in the UK the exact date will be sometime in June.
The Nokia 6 is a unibody Android Nougat phone crafted from a single block of Series 6000 aluminium. This is paired with a 5.5in full-HD laminated in-cell display with protective 2.5D Gorilla Glass.
Inside HMD has fitted the Qualcomm Snapdragon 430 octa-core processor, along with the Adreno 505 GPU, 4GB of LPDDR3 RAM, 64GB of storage and a 3,000mAh battery.
The company draws particular attention to the Nokia 6’s multimedia functionality, quoting dual amplifiers that deliver a 6dB louder sound than a regular amp, giving higher voice, deeper bass and unmatched clarity, and Dolby Atmos that creates powerful, moving audio that seems to flow all around users.
There’s also a 16Mp, f/2.0 primary camera with phase-detection autofocus, and an 8Mp selfie camera.
In our Nokia 6 hands-on review we found ourselves feeling quite torn. If this were a smartphone launched by any of the other big players in the smartphone industry right now we’ d probably say that it’s a decent smartphone with a really good price tag but nothing particularly outstanding in the current market. But because this is Nokia we’ re talking about we’ re strangely excited about it.
We think it’s going to catch the attention of those who loved their Nokia phones years back thanks to their simplicity and reliability, and with such a great price tag we expect it’ ll quickly become a popular choice for smartphone buyers. We’ re looking forward to spending more time with the Nokia 6 and its siblings, and we’ re intrigued to find out what the future holds for Nokia.
Second, there is the Nokia 5, a more compact version of the Nokia 6 but with a 5.2in HD IPS display, retailing at 189 Euros.
