Maui County Mayor Alan Arakawa says he will be running for lieutenant governor in the November 2018 election.
Maui County Mayor Alan Arakawa says he will be running for lieutenant governor in the November 2018 election.
Arakawa announced his candidacy during the „Hawaii News Now Sunrise“ TV news program Friday. Arakawa has served as Maui County mayor for three non-consecutive terms. He told local media that he had considered retiring, but says he sees a great need for better leadership in state government.
He considers the setbacks on Honolulu rail project as an example of Gov. David Ige’s poor leadership.
It is not clear what party Arakawa will run under in 2018. The mayoral position he currently holds is nonpartisan.
The current lieutenant governor Shan Tsutsui has said that he is pretty certain that he will not seek re-election.
