Phil Collins kicked off his first tour in nearly a decade on June 2 in Liverpool and followed it up with another show on Sunday, June 4 at the Royal Albert Hall in London. After sustaining a serious head injury from a fall, the singer was hospitalized, and he will be unable to continue his tour for the time being. Subsequently, an announcement was released on Collins’s official Facebook page, stating that the tour, titled the “Not Dead Yet Live Tour, ” had to be postponed. The statement further revealed how the 66-year-old musician sustained his head injury.
According to the announcement on the singer’s Facebook page, Collins has been suffering from “ ‘drop foot’ as a result of a back operation.” As such, the musician has been having trouble walking in recent times and slipped in his hotel room while heading to the toilet “in the middle of the night.” The English singer then fell and hit his head on a chair and sustained a severe cut near his eye. Consequently, Collins was rushed to the hospital and required stitches for his injury. Fortunately, the 66-year-old is expected to make a full recovery, but remains hospitalized “and will be kept under observation for 24 hours.”
This isn’ t the first time the singer has been revealed to have back-related health issues. In 2015, Collins opened up about his back problems in an interview the Rolling Stone and said that he had to undergo a major back surgery.
“I had an MRI and my back and hips were just shot. The doctor had to go in there, work on the sciatic nerve and take my back apart and unscramble the mess, ” said Collins back in 2015.
In early 2016, Collins further revealed that he had sustained some serious foot injuries, which is most likely what the statement on Facebook was referring to when mentioning that the singer was suffering from “drop foot.”
“The back surgery I had was great – I mean, how good can surgery be? But it was problem-free. But then when I was recovering on crutches, I fell and fractured my foot. When I recovered from foot surgery, I fell again and fractured another part of the same foot. My right foot now is completely numb, ” said Collins in an interview with People. In the same interview, the singer also admitted that he would probably no longer be able to play the drums on tour, as his left arm was not the same anymore due to “a neural thing.”
Regardless of his various injuries and health issues, the singer, who is known for popular songs such as “In the Air Tonight” and “Against All Odds (Take a Look at Me Now) , ” was very excited to return to the stage on Sunday, as revealed in the Facebook post. His team conveyed his thanks to his fans and apologized for the sudden and unexpected change of plans. Furthermore, they specifically emphasized the warm reception Collins received during his show at the Royal Albert Hall on Sunday; something the singer is very grateful for.
For his live show in London, Collins also appeared in crutches and had to remain seated for his performance. He was also joined by his 16-year-old son, Nicholas Collins, who played the drums for him during the gig.
While the music icon will no longer be able to perform on stage this week as planned, fans can expect Collins to resume his “Not Dead Yet Live Tour” soon. According to the announcement, Collins will return to the stage as part of his tour in Cologne and Paris at the end this month. Furthermore, his London shows, which were originally scheduled for June 8 and 9 at the Royal Albert Hall, have now been postponed to November 26 and 27 respectively.
We wish Collins a quick recovery and hope to see him back on stage soon!
