The popular free-to-play fighting game Killer Instinct will be available on Steam later this year. It’s unconfirmed if players will be able to bring their progress over from the Windows 10 version.
2013’s Killer Instinct was originally only available on the Xbox One, but a Windows 10 version followed in 2016, arriving alongside the game’s third season of content. Today, the game’s official Twitter account revealed that the fighting game will leave its Microsoft Store exclusivity and also arrive for Steam later this year.
Although the tweet did not reveal more information, it’s highly probable that the game will be offered in the same free-to-play format as on the Microsoft Store, where players can purchase individual fighters, or the $39.99 Definitive Edition to unlock the full roster of characters.
This is not the first Microsoft exclusive game to arrive for Steam in recent memory, with Halo Wars: Definitive Edition also making its way to Valve’s digital store earlier this year.
And just like Halo Wars, the Steam version of Killer Instinct is unlikely to support cross-play with Windows 10 or Xbox One version owners and instead may have a separate player base. But it could also gain some usual Steam features such as Steam achievements, cloud saves, trading cards, and more. There will hopefully be a way to transfer save files and progress for any players looking to make the switch over to the Steam version.
The tweet promises more information about the new release at a later date, and for those interested in trying out the fighting game right now, the game is available on the Microsoft Store for Xbox One and Windows 10 .
