Hurricane Harvey is causing major flood damage and forcing thousands of people out of their homes.
WASHINGTON (WUSA9) – Hurricane Harvey is causing major flood damage and forcing thousands of people out of their homes.
Some residents have lost everything.
There are people all across the DMV trying to make a difference and help those who lost so much in Houston.
“I’ve been in D. C. for four years now and every single day I miss home, ” Michelle Dhansinghani said.
She is from the Rio Grande Valley in Texas.
“One of the poorest regions in the country. One of the things we offer is lots of love and goodness in our community, ” Dhansinghani described.

Her hometown is about 300 miles away from Houston.
“When any part of my state hurts, we all hurt.”
Dhansinghani said it has been hard witnessing the destruction of Hurricane Harvey.
It is difficult to see that people are dying, losing homes, and being rescued from rooftops.
“It was almost a sense of guilt not to be there with my brothers and sisters from Texas, ” Dhansinghani told WUSA9. “So, I decided in D. C. lets organize all of the other Texans — all the Texans here — and do what we can do best right?”
Dhansinghani pulled her resources and organized a fundraiser at Hill Country BBQ in Chinatown for Friday.
She is also reaching out online and raised more than $4,000 in just two days.
The money would go to help victims in Houston’s poorest neighborhoods.
“These are usually the folks that don’t have any access to flood insurance or home insurance. They’re the ones that are going to be hurting the most, ” Dhansinghani said.
