Startling photos from space show the devastating carnage of Hurricane Irma.
NASA posted before-and-after satellite pictures of St Thomas, St, John, Tortola and Virgin Gorda islands, showing how their once lush-green tropics are now mud-covered disaster zones.
The pre-Irma snap was taken Aug. 25, long before Irma, and the post-Irma on Sunday, immediately after the Category 5 storm passed through the Caribbean.
“The most obvious change is the widespread browning of the landscape, ” NASA wrote on its Earth Observatory site .
“There are a number of possible reasons for this. Lush green tropical vegetation can be ripped away by a storm’s strong winds, leaving the satellite with a view of more bare ground.”
