An ex-Muncie woman who recently pleaded guilty to stealing more than $1.2 million from Amazon faces decidedly more mundane allegations locally.
MUNCIE, Ind. – An ex-Muncie woman who recently pleaded guilty to stealing more than $1.2 million in merchandise from Amazon faces decidedly more mundane allegations in a Delaware County court.
Leah Jeanette Finan, 37, and her 38-year-old husband, Erin Joseph Finan, are set to be sentenced Nov. 9 in U. S. District Court in Indianapolis after pleading guilty to mail fraud and money laundering.
Federal authorities allege the Finans – apparently now living in Clarksville, Tenn.– bought hundreds of electronics items from Amazon under false names, then reported the merchandise was damaged or not working.
They then sold the replacement items they received from the online retailer at no charge.
In Delaware Circuit Court 5, Leah Finan stands charged with two felonies, theft and check fraud, and a misdemeanor count of fraud.
According to court documents, Finan in September 2016 wrote a bogus check – for $1,732 – to cover her lease of a home in the 1100 block of West Carson Street.
Also last fall, she is accused of stealing a washer and dryer – apparently from the same property – valued at $1,400.
The fraud charge stems from false claims Finan allegedly made on a rental application.
She is scheduled to appear at a pre-trial hearing in the local case on Oct. 30. Her trial is set for Feb. 1.
Court records suggest the Finans have frequently moved.
In the Delaware Circuit Court 5 case, filed last April, Leah Finan has been listed at three addresses – in Muncie, at an Indianapolis motel and most recently in Tennessee.
Since March 2014, she has been named as a defendant in eight lawsuits, filed in Delaware, Madison and Hamilton counties.
In those suits, Finan, and frequently her husband, have been listed at five different addresses – two in Muncie, and in Yorktown, Anderson and Ingalls.
Yorktown Marshal Todd St. John said Monday he believed his department’s only dealings with the couple came in the form of notification the Finans were being investigated by state police.
