Chinese president says two nations should further open markets and boost cooperation, during phone call with US leader
Chinese President Xi Jinping told his US counterpart Donald Trump in talks over the phone on Tuesday that both countries should further open their markets to each other and step up cooperation, amid rising tensions over their huge trade imbalance.
Xi said the Sino-US relationship remained stable and had made progress in 2017, and that the two nations should cooperate on various fronts including dealing with the Korean peninsula, state-run broadcaster CCTV reported.
Tensions have escalated between Beijing and Washington in recent months, with China on Friday reporting its largest ever trade surplus with the United States in 2017 to US$275.8 billion – contrary to Trump’s goal to narrow the US trade deficit with China.
