Hours after delivering a pointed rebuke of Trumpism in front of Congress, French President Emmanuel Macron embraced one of President Trump’s fiercest political rivals.
Macron tweeted a video of himself sharing a warm hug with civil rights icon Rep. John Lewis (D-Ga.) Wednesday afternoon.
“He fought for civil rights with Martin Luther King,” wrote Macron . “Very honored to have @repjohnlewis by my side in the streets of Washington.”
“Thanks for everything,” Macron can be heard telling the long-serving Congressman towards the end of the 32-second clip.
The pair also visited the memorial to Lewis’s fellow civil rights activist Martin Luther King, Jr. on Wednesday, following Macron’s address to a joint session of Congress where he urged the US to veer away from nationalism and isolationism.
The implicit critique of Trump’s foreign policy came after two days of hearty handshakes and cheek pecks between the world leaders.
Lewis found himself on the receiving end of a Trump Twitter tirade on Jan. 14,2017 when the then-President-elect wrote, “Congressman John Lewis should spend more time on fixing and helping his district, which is in horrible shape and falling apart (not to mention crime infested) rather than falsely complaining about the election results.”
The tweets, which came as Lewis announced plans to skip Trump’s inauguration, dismissed Lewis as “All talk, talk – no action or results. Sad!”
The social media attack came just two days before Martin Luther King Day.
