Zauo, the Japanese chain where diners can fish for their dinner, is planning to open its first NYC location in Chelsea.
As Eater reports, guests will be given poles and bait, the better to angle from a tank brimming with 10 different kinds of fish. Staffers will offer to help anyone who needs it.
Staffers will also gut, clean, grill, fry or serve the fish as sushi. Those who’ d rather not pick up a pole can go to the third floor of the restaurant, at 152 W. 24th St., where they can have someone else do the fishing.
But this fishy experience will cost you: At Zauo’s Japanese locations, catching and eating a red snapper will set you back 2,499 yen — about $22. The restaurant, which has yet to set a date for its Chelsea opening, also plans to start a branch in San Francisco.
When Vice reporter Drew Millard visited the restaurant in Tokyo in April 2015, he wrote, “The restaurant’s centerpiece is a series of tables made to look like a giant boat, surrounded by a moat full of fish. It looks, I can say without exaggeration, cool as f–k.”
