After being on the rumor mills for months, Xiaomi-backed Black Shark has today unveiled its first gaming smartphone in China. Also named “Black Shark”, the phone from the outside and inside, looks to be designed for gaming with thick aesthetics and top-of-the-line internals. Its most expensive variant features 8GB of RAM and costs 3,499 Yuan (~$557).
The Black Shark’s biggest highlight is the fact that it can be directly mounted on the company’s gaming pad accessory — the Shark GamePad. It seems like a regular Bluetooth-enabled controller and has a joystick, a trigger and a 340mAh battery that offers 30 hours of power. Surprisingly, the gamepad is also compatible with other phones which support Bluetooth 4.0 and Android 4.4 or above.
The Black Shark, like every other gaming phone, also flaunts a rugged exterior and weighs nearly tw0-hundred grams. There’s a dedicated hardware key for switching to the gaming mode. On the front, you’ll find a 5.99-inch Full HD+ display with an aspect ratio of 18:9. Although the phone still has a home button which also houses the fingerprint sensor.
Underneath, it’s powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 845 processor, 6/8GB of RAM, 128GB of UFS 2.0 internal storage, and a 4000mAh battery that is compatible with 18W fast charging through Quick Charge 3. Another key feature which makes the Black Shark a gaming phone is a multi-layer cooling system. It’s composed of a high thermal conductivity copper alloy substrate, nano-composite graphite, heat pipe and liquid cooling that is capable of bringing down the phone’s temperature by 8 degrees.
The camera arrangement includes two rear sensors — one 12-megapixel f/1.75 lens with a pixel size of 1.25micron and another 20-megapixel f/1.75 lens which has a pixel size of 1.0micron. In addition to that, there’s a 20-megapixel f/2.2 snapper on the front which can also record 4K videos.
Furthermore, the Black Shark features stereo speakers, a USB Type-C port on the bottom, and an Android Oreo-based custom interface. It starts at 2,999 Yuan (~$477) for the 6GB RAM and 64GB storage variant and goes all the way up to 3,499 Yuan (~$557) for 8GB RAM, 128GB storage. The Shark GamePad, sadly, is not complimentary and costs an additional 179 Yuan (~$29).
