California Wants to Tax Text Messages

But text messaging already going out of fashion
A California government agency wants to start taxing text messaging.
California’s Public Utilities Commission wants to tax text messages by residents to further fund existing programs which subsidize phone services for the poor.
If enacted, the tax would likely be the first in the nation. According to the Mercury News:
Business groups, including the Bay Area Council, California Chamber of Commerce and Silicon Valley Leadership Group and others opposing the idea, calculated the new charges for wireless consumers could total about $44.
