First Broadway Play Starts Performances Since Shutdown — Here’s What To Expect As Theater Reopens

Broadway shows will largely resume in September and beyond—and audiences will have to show proof of vaccination to get in the door.
The new play Pass Over will begin performances at Broadway’s August Wilson Theatre Wednesday, marking the first time a new theater piece has been performed on Broadway in nearly a year and a half and serving as the first of a string of shows to begin performances over the next few months as the Great White Way comes back to life after its prolonged closure. $22.4 billion. That’s the projected economic impact of Broadway’s shutdown based on performances resuming in early September, according to a report from industry analytics firm Tanna. New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio noted in March the city’s theater industry has an economic impact of $15 billion each year, with 100,000 jobs affected by the industry and ongoing shutdowns.
