Court In Military-Ruled Myanmar Convicts Aung San Suu Kyi And Other Political Leaders

On December 6, 2021, the Zabuthiri Court in Myanmar pronounced its verdicts in the case against President U Win Myint and State Counsellor Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, among others, under section 505(b) of the Penal Code and Section 25 of the Disaster Management Law.
On December 6,2021, the Zabuthiri Court in Myanmar pronounced its verdicts in the case against President U Win Myint and State Counsellor Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, among others, under section 505(b) of the Penal Code and Section 25 of the Disaster Management Law. U Win Myint and Daw Aung San Suu Kyi were found guilty of these two charges and each sentenced to four years in prison. Reportedly, Aung San Suu Kyi’s sentence was later reduced to two years. The verdicts come after both political leaders were arrested on February 1, 2021, detained incommunicado, denied any contact with their lawyers for several weeks, and subjected to trials that raise several concerns. Indeed, over recent months, the High-Level Panel, consisting of prominent lawyers and established in July 2021 to review the trials of high-profile political leaders in Myanmar, has been raising its concerns in relation to the right to a fair trial afforded to the political leaders in Myanmar.
