IFC Films Unlimited

Stream indie movies on the cheap
If you consider yourself an independent film buff, IFC Films Unlimited is the channel for you. This video streaming service is a destination for films that have been released in theaters and won awards. IFC Films Unlimited serves its content without ads and lets download movies for offline viewing on mobile platforms. Its main drawback is that it lacks a dedicated app for nearly as many platforms as competitors, such as Editors’ Choice winners Hulu and Netflix.Pricing and Platforms
The ad-free IFC Films Unlimited costs $5.99 per month (it lacks a discounted annual plan). Hulu ($9.99 per month) and Paramount+ ($7.99 per month) have ad-supported plans that cost more than IFC Films Unlimited, but they offer more mainstream content. Netflix’s Standard plan and Max are pricier, at $15.49 and $16.99 per month, respectively.
You don’t need to pay for streaming entertainment; check out our roundup of the best free video streaming services for our top picks. Tubi is our Editors’ Choice winner for the category because of its mainstream library of TV shows and movies. If you are an independent film fan, IFC Films Unlimited is still an inexpensive way to watch hundreds of the best specialty films from the last two decades without ads.
lms Unlimited is available as a channel on Amazon Prime Video, Dish, Sling, and YouTube TV. You can access Prime Video on the web, mobile platforms (Android and iOS), media streaming devices (Apple TV, Chromecast, Fire TV, and Roku), game consoles (PlayStation, Xbox, and Wii), smart TVs, or via the dedicated Microsoft Store app. You can download a dedicated app on Apple TV (US and Canada) and Roku (US) for media streaming devices. Hulu, Netflix, and other services offer dedicated apps for far more platforms. What Can You Watch on IFC Films Unlimited?
IFC Films Unlimited is home to hundreds of independent films, some with blockbuster budgets but most with smaller casts and bankrolls. Films in the library come from IFC’s three distribution labels: IFC Films, Sundance Selects, and IFC Midnight. The result is a broad and eclectic selection of films. You are free to browse the channel without subscribing, which is a nice touch.
IFC Unlimited does not have as massive a library as other services such as The Criterion Channel or Mubi, both of which curate their lineups. Ovid.tv is similar to IFC Films Unlimited in that it includes titles from several film distribution companies.
Critically acclaimed dramatic films like Blackberry are mixed in with family-friendly fare like First Position, a documentary about young dancers in New York City. You’ll find movies with major stars like Paint, starring Owen Wilson. There are also a lot of movies featuring familiar faces who aren’t yet household names.
IFC Films Unlimited does not currently offer any original shows or exclusive TV series, though most dedicated movie streaming services do not offer this type of content, either.IFC’s Web Interface
Signing up for IFC Unlimited is a bit tricky, because we had to first determine how we wanted to watch it. For this review, we subscribed through Amazon Prime Video. Since Amazon already had all of our information and payment details, all we had to do was click to start the seven-day free trial.
IFC Films Unlimited on Amazon Prime Video Channels has the same layout as Amazon Prime Video. It’s not particularly clean or minimalist like Max or Netflix but arranges movies according to genre, and has separate sections for Popular Movies and Recently Added Movies.
Searching for a movie specifically on IFC Films Unlimited using Amazon’s interface is a bit of a chore. You can type in whatever you want to search for, but you will get results from the entire Amazon site, including from other add-on channels. Once you find something to watch on IFC Films Unlimited, you can hover over a movie’s thumbnail to see a brief description or helpful user rating, or to add it to your watchlist. IFC Apps
To test the mobile experience, we downloaded the Amazon Prime Video app to an iPhone. The IFC Films Unlimited channel is prominently displayed on the app, so we didn’t have trouble finding it. The mobile interface looks like the website, with its dark background and brightly colored thumbnails. Films you haven’t completed are organized in a section that includes films you have already watched.
On a movie’s details page, you can see various facts about the film, related movies, credits, customer reviews, and even some fun facts about each independent film. Since it is part of Amazon Prime Video, you can download movies from its details page and watch them offline whenever you can’t connect to a Wi-Fi network.
Streaming movies from the app was quick and easy. Using a home Wi-Fi connection (450Mpbs download), we downloaded a one-hour-and-51-minute movie at the highest quality in about seven minutes. Remember to make sure you are using a Wi-Fi connection or have an unlimited data plan before you start streaming or downloading movies on a mobile device. Playback Quality
IFC Films Unlimited’s playback interface shines. For instance, when you pause the video, the IMDb-powered X-Ray overlay appears in the top left corner. It displays key info about all of the main stars of the film you’re watching, as well as some fun trivia. Besides the usual playback controls, you get 10-second rewind and fast-forward buttons. You can also select the playback resolution on this screen.
Many of these independent films were not shot in HD, but you can watch them at up to 1080p resolution if they were. Apple TV+, Disney+, and Netflix all offer 4K on-demand content. Since you get IFC Films Unlimited through Prime Video, you can watch content from it on up to three devices simultaneously. That’s about average, but BritBox notably supports five concurrent streams per account.
For reference, we tested the streaming performance over a Gigabit Ethernet connection on a PC and a Wi-Fi connection (450Mbps download) on the mobile test device. We watched a documentary called Finding Vivian Maier without any problems and resumed playback on the phone partway through the film without any disruptions.Accessibility and Parental Controls
IFC Films Unlimited channel has the same accessibility features as the other movies offered by Amazon Prime. You can adjust the closed captioning settings (including the font size and color) directly from the video player, which is convenient. Audio Descriptions are not enabled for any of the movies we watched. This accessibility feature provides an audible narration of on-screen events that would otherwise not be discernible through dialog alone.
IFC Films Unlimited works with Amazon Prime Video’s parental control options, so you can restrict what each profile can watch by rating and designating certain accounts as Kids’ profiles. Disney+, Max, and Netflix have similar parental control capabilities. Can You Watch IFC Films Unlimited With a VPN?
A VPN can help keep you safe online, but their ability to spoof your location can cause problems for some video streaming services with region-specific content. Amazon Prime Video is one of those platforms that does not work well with a VPN, and since IFC Films Unlimited is a channel on Prime Video, you will likely run into trouble.
We tried streaming some content after connecting the device to a US-based Proton VPN server. We received the following message: “Your device is connected to the Internet using a VPN or proxy service. Please disable it and try again.” While you could try to find a VPN that works with the video streaming services you use, there is no guarantee that everything will work together in the future. Many streaming platforms are closing loopholes that allow VPN users to connect. Some VPNs do offer dedicated streaming servers, but we recommend choosing a VPN based on its security and privacy features instead.Verdict: Affordable Indie Film Streaming
IFC Films Unlimited offers many great ad-free movies at a reasonable price and integrates well with Amazon Prime Video’s accessibility and parental control features (should you choose to subscribe through that option). The service’s main drawback is that it isn’t a standalone platform like many competing streaming platforms. Netflix remains our Editor’s Choice winner for on-demand video streaming with its robust library of original and mainstream movies. Hulu is also a great option for its combination of immense on-demand library and live TV offerings.

South Korea’s Yoon defends martial law decree, vows to ‘fight to the end’

The president also denied rebellion charges as the opposition planned to submit a new impeachment motion against him.
South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol on Thursday defended his martial law decree as an act of governance and denied rebellion charges.
Yoon also vowed to “fight to the end” and refused to step down, accusing opposition parties of seeking to cause “instability”.
“I will fight to the end, to prevent the forces and criminal groups that have been responsible for paralysing the country’s government and disrupting the nation’s constitutional order from threatening the future of the Republic of Korea,” he said in a televised statement.
The address came hours before the main liberal opposition Democratic Party submits a new impeachment motion against him after he survived an impeachment bid in parliament last Saturday.
Yoon’s December 3 martial law decree has generated political chaos and protests calling for his ouster.
On Wednesday, police said that they raided Yoon’s office, as the investigation into his declaration of martial law gathers pace.
“The Special Investigation Team has conducted a raid on the presidential office, the National Police Agency, the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency, and the National Assembly Security Service,” the unit stated in a message.

InnovationRx: What We Know About UnitedHealthcare CEO’s Alleged Killer So Far

Plus: A mystery disease is currently circulating in Congo, how patients are using AI to fight claim denials and raw milk may have caused a bird flu infection.
Earlier this week, police arrested 26 year-old Luigi Mangione, who has been charged with second-degree murder in the killing of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson in New York City last week. He faces additional charges related to firearm possession and forgery. He also faces firearms and forgery charges in Pennsylvania, where he was apprehended. Today, police said that shell casings found at the scene of the crime matched the gun Mangione had in his possession at the time of his arrest. His fingerprints were also found at the scene.
The gun itself appears to be 3D-printed, a trend among criminals that has been growing over the past few years. According to reports, Mangione appears to have suffered from a rare back condition called spondylolisthesis. A review of his reddit account revealed multiple discussions about his back pain. Mangione has not yet pleaded guilty or not guilty on any charges. He remains in jail in Pennsylvania and is currently fighting extradition to New York.Initial Tests Of Unknown Disease In Congo Suggest Malaria, But Experts Are Still Concerned
Since October, over 400 people in the Kwango province of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) have been infected with an unknown disease that has killed at least 31 people, according to the World Health Organization (WHO). The outbreak appears to be affecting mostly malnourished children under the age of 14. Yesterday, WHO Director-General Tedros Ghebreyesus said that of 12 initial lab samples collected, 10 tested positive for malaria. The organization is doing more testing to isolate the cause.
This may take some time as the region is relatively remote. Getting teams there during the rainy season took several days and its infrastructure and telecommunications are limited. Ghebreyesus also noted that the area has “high levels of malnutrition and low vaccination coverage,” which complicates identification of any particular culprit.
It’s likely this may not be a new disease but rather “something that is not extraordinary, but occurring in a place where there are very limited resources,” said Amesh Adalja, a senior scholar at the Johns Hopkins Center for Health Security. “It just may be that they have increased mortality because multiple things are circulating at once.”
That said, there’s reason to pay attention to this outbreak, Rupali Limaye, an associate professor at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health told Forbes. If this is a new disease, or mutated version of an existing one, the area’s lack of infrastructure will be a major challenge for surveillance, she said. However, Adjala noted that because of recent outbreaks of other diseases in the DRC, there are already teams of doctors, scientists and other health professionals, who can help contain and control an outbreak.
For Anne Rimoin, an epidemiologist at UCLA who has worked in the DRC for decades, this situation highlights the need for more resources to combat infectious disease outbreaks. “We need to provide these countries the infrastructure and resources to be able to respond not only in times of war with these pathogens, but also in times of perceived peace,” she said.Pipeline & Deal Updates

nitedHealthcare, which has been thrust into the spotlight after the killing of its CEO Brian Thompson, has one of the highest rates of claims denials, in some cases using AI to deny patients care.
But entrepreneurs are now using AI to fight back. Holden Karau, a San Francisco Bay-area software engineer, recently built a free tool called FightHealthInsurance.com that uses AI to appeal denials. You give it some basic information about your denial, your insurance plan and your health history, and the tool asks some additional questions, then offers three different pre-written appeals to choose from.
“I want to increase appeals because I think there are too many denials, and it’s important that we level the AI playing field,” Karau said. “People are being hurt by the insurance companies’ use of AI.”Other Healthcare News

“I haven’t seen any evidence that they have the right guy”, Thomas Dickey, a lawyer for Luigi Mangione, said Tuesday. The NYPD says otherwise. Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch said Wednesday that the gun found on the 26-year-old is a match for the shell casings found at the site where UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson was gunned down in Manhattan a week ago. She added that Mangione’s fingerprints match those on a water bottle and protein bar wrapper found near the scene; they were purchased by the gunman from a coffee shop prior to the shooting. More:

SpaceX's tech-billionaire astronaut, Jared Isaacman, says his future missions are a 'question mark' now

0

Jared Isaacman planned two more missions with SpaceX, including Starship’s first crewed flight. Trump has thrown his Polaris Program into question.
SpaceX and its go-to billionaire-turned-private-astronaut seem to be going their separate ways, at least for the next four years.
Jared Isaacman has flown two SpaceX missions to space and is slated to fly two more.
However, Isaacman may no longer fly those missions now that President-elect Donald Trump has tapped him to lead NASA.
Isaacman is the founder and CEO of a payments-processing company called Shift4, but he’s more famous for conducting the world’s first commercial spacewalk in September.
The spacewalk was the main feature of the first mission of the Polaris Program, which Isaacman started in partnership with SpaceX to supercharge the company’s human-spaceflight capabilities as it aims for the moon and Mars.
The program is scheduled to fly two future missions, including the first human flight aboard SpaceX’s Starship mega-rocket.
Isaacman has previously indicated that he would be on board that flight. It would be a crucial step in Elon Musk’s plans to establish a human settlement on Mars using Starship.
The NASA nomination throws that mission into uncertainty, Isaacman acknowledged on Wednesday.
“The future of the Polaris program is a little bit of a question mark at the moment. It may wind up on hold for a moment”, Isaacman said at the Spacepower 2024 conference in Orlando, according to Reuters.
Indeed, shortly after his nomination, experts told Business Insider that it was unlikely Isaacman would fly to space during his term as NASA Administrator.
“Well, it certainly has never happened before”, John Logsdon, the founder of the Space Policy Institute at George Washington University, told BI.
That doesn’t mean it can’t happen, but Logsdon added, “NASA Administrator is a full-time, high-level government job. Taking time off to train for and carry out another spaceflight seems to me to be a little implausible.”
If Isaacman wanted to fly a SpaceX mission during his NASA term, “that would take some thought on his part and the rest of the team”, George Nield, a former head of the FAA’s office of commercial space transportation, told BI. “What’s the risk, what’s the benefit, what happens if there’s a bad day, and are there succession plans?”
Nield co-authored a 2020 analysis which calculated that US spaceflight has a 1% fatal failure rate, because four out of nearly 400 spaceflights have ended in deadly malfunctions. That’s a rate 10,000 times greater than commercial airliners.
The US Senate has to confirm Isaacman’s nomination before he can take office.
“Having the boss of the enterprise take the risk of spaceflight would be unusual, but we live in unusual times”, Logsdon said.

New Genmoji ad showcases creations that definitely were not made with Apple Intelligence

Apple’s latest ad shows off Genmoji, or at least the idea of generating whatever emoji you want with Apple Intelligence, but the creations shown are clearly not representative of the actual tool.
Apple’s latest ad shows off Genmoji, or at least the idea of generating whatever emoji you want with Apple Intelligence, but the creations shown are clearly not representative of the actual tool.
The playful ad seems to be overselling the potential results of Genmoji, which released with iOS 18.2. While some could be massaged into existence with trial and error, they never met the clean, animated results shown in the ad.
The ad does a great job of selling the idea behind Genmoji, but it may leave viewers disappointed in the real thing. These colorful, sharp, animated creations made by human artists are miles ahead of anything that could be made by Apple’s early attempt at AI.
I tried to prompt Genmoji with what the song lyrics called each object first, then added descriptors to manipulate the results to get as close as possible. In many instances, what was shown in the ad just couldn’t be recreated.
For example, getting an old man in skis seemed impossible and asking for “twelve-sided die” results in a six-sided die. “Chair that can walk” and “Clock that can talk” proved impossible to recreate as well.
The pink “furry cardigan” smacked of too much detail. The real result was much less sweater-like with melted buttons and confused textures.
The ad itself is harmless and raises awareness of the feature, but it smacks in the face of the artificial nature of AI and Apple’s place in it. When Animoji debuted, it showcased them in whimsical karaoke ads that may have been computer-generated for the ad, but remained true to the expressions and style of the product.
Hopefully, Genmoji will one day be so well-made that Apple can use the real thing in an ad. Until then, it seems the “artificial” part of AI is taking the reins in Apple’s marketing.

TVN i Polsat objęte specjalną ochroną. Ambasador USA o "szkodliwej ingerencji"

0
