‘In moments like this, we see the best of Rhode Island’: Leaders react to Brown shooting

“The firefighters, the policemen, the civil leaders, neighbors who come together, and let us celebrate that community,” Sen. Jack Reed said.
“The firefighters, the policemen, the civil leaders, neighbors who come together, and let us celebrate that community”, Sen. Jack Reed said.
New England leaders are reacting to the mass shooting at Brown University during final exams Saturday night, killing at least two and wounding nine others.
“Two are looking down on us right now from heaven,” President Donald Trump said about the Brown University shooting, per video shared by NBC. “I just want to pay my respects to everybody.”
The gunman fired more than 40 rounds from a 9 mm handgun in a classroom in the Barus & Holley building, which houses the School of Engineering and physics department, The Associated Press reported.
Sen. Elizabeth Warren said on social media the deadly shooting was “horrific,” while Sen. Ed Markey called for action “to end this painful epidemic of gun violence.”
“Students should be able to learn in peace, not fear gun violence,” Warren said. “My heart goes out to the victims, their loved ones, and the entire Providence community.”
Sen. Chris Murphy, of Connecticut, spoke about the shooting on CNN. Murphy took office shortly after the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting, which happened 13 years ago Sunday.
“A community never, ever recovers from a shooting like this,” Murphy told CNN. “That community in Providence won’t recover. Those kids who are returning to campus are going to be looking over their shoulder, wondering if they are going to survive their next day in class.”
Sen. Jack Reed, of Rhode Island, said he “woke up with a heavy heart thinking about the Brown shooting and remembering” the Sandy Hook anniversary. Reed spoke on behalf of some of Rhode Island’s congressional delegation at a press conference Sunday.
“This has been a horrible, terrible moment,” Reed said. “But in moments like this, we see the best of Rhode Island. The firefighters, the policemen, the civil leaders, neighbors who come together, and let us celebrate that community.”
Police released surveillance footage showing a person of interest dressed in black, calmly walking away from the scene. A person of interest was detained early Sunday morning and reportedly identified as Benjamin Erickson, an Army veteran from Wisconsin.
Brown University student Mia Tretta previously lived through a shooting at her high school. She was shot and injured in 2019 at Saugus High School in California. Kendall Turner, 19, was critically wounded during the shooting at Brown, her alma mater Durham Academy confirmed.
“No one in this country even assumes it’s going to happen to them,” Tretta said, per NBC News. “Once it happens to you, you assume or are told it will never happen again, and obviously that is not the case.”
Murphy appeared to blame Trump for launching “a dizzying campaign to increase violence in this country.” Murphy pointed to the administration restoring gun rights to some felons and cutting bipartisan mental health and community anti-gun violence grants.
“He’s knowingly restoring gun rights to dangerous people, he’s cutting off grants that have bipartisan support,” Murphy said. Additional violence is “knowable” and “foreseeable,” Murphy said about Trump’s policies.

A Brown University student survived being shot in high school. Then came the active shooter alerts.

“No one should ever have to go through one shooting, let alone two,” Mia Tretta said Sunday. “And as someone who was shot at my high school when I was 15 years old, I never thought that this was something I’d have to go through again.”
“No one should ever have to go through one shooting, let alone two,” Mia Tretta said Sunday. “And as someone who was shot at my high school when I was 15 years old, I never thought that this was something I’d have to go through again.”
When Brown University junior Mia Tretta’s phone began buzzing with an emergency alert during finals week, she tried to convince herself it couldn’t be happening again.
In 2019, Tretta had been shot in the abdomen during a mass shooting at Saugus High School in Santa Clarita, California. Two students were killed, and she and two others were wounded. She was 15 at the time.
On Saturday, Tretta was studying in her dorm with a friend when the first message arrived, warning of an emergency at the university’s engineering building. Something must have happened, she thought, but surely it couldn’t be a shooting.
As more alerts poured in, urging people to lock down and stay away from windows, the familiarity of the language made clear what she had feared. By the end of the day, two people were dead and nine others injured in the Providence, Rhode Island, shooting that once again upended a school campus.
“No one should ever have to go through one shooting, let alone two,” Tretta said in a phone interview Sunday. “And as someone who was shot at my high school when I was 15 years old, I never thought that this was something I’d have to go through again.”
Tretta’s experience captures a grim reality for a generation now in college: students who grew up rehearsing lockdowns and active-shooter drills, only to encounter the same violence again years later on campuses that once seemed like an escape from it.
In recent years, small groups of students have endured multiple mass shootings at different stages of their education, including survivors of the 2018 massacre at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, who later experienced a deadly shooting at Florida State University in April.
Another Brown student, Zoe Weissman, reflected on social media about attending middle school next door to the Parkland high school during the mass killing there. She said she was outside the middle school when the shooting happened, and heard gunshots and screams, saw first responders and then watched videos of what happened.
Louisville, Kentucky, Mayor Craig Greenberg said on Facebook that his son Ben, a junior at Brown, is safe after using furniture to barricade himself and his roommates inside their room. Greenberg survived an assassination attempt during his mayoral campaign in 2022.
After Tretta was shot in high school, she pushed for tighter gun restrictions and rose to a leadership role with the group Students Demand Action. Her advocacy took her to the White House under former President Joe Biden, and she also met with his former Attorney General Merrick Garland.
She has particularly focused on “ghost guns,” such as the one used at her high school, that can be built from parts and make it difficult to track or regulate owners.
And at Brown, Tretta had been working on a paper about the educational journeys of students who have lived through school shootings, a subject shaped by her own experience. The paper was due in a few days.
Tretta, who studies international and public affairs and education, said Saturday was the first time she’d gotten such an active shooter alert at Brown.
“I chose Brown, a place that I love, because it felt like somewhere I could finally be safe and finally, you know, be normal in this new normal that I live of a school shooting survivor,” she said. “And it’s happened again. And it didn’t have to.”

Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic will be out before 2030

0

There are still a couple of question marks regarding this statement though, and not everybody is convinced.
During The Game Awards last Friday, LucasFilm surprised everyone by announcing Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic, the first single-player game in the acclaimed series since 2005. And to make things even better, Casey Hudson is leading the development, the same Hudson who also made Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic and the Mass Effect games.
But when will it be released? We barely had time to report and announce the game before Bloomberg journalist Jason Schreier appeared on Bluesky with bad news, explaining that the studio developing the title was founded as recently as this year and that we definitely cannot expect the game before 2030.
Schreier is normally held in high regard, but not everyone agrees with his analysis of the situation. One of those who doesn’t is the aforementioned Casey Hudson, who wrote the following on social media in an apparent response to Schreier’s conclusion:
“Don’t worry about the ‘not until 2030’ rumors. The game will be out before then. I’m not getting any younger!”
Although it sounds promising, both we and the fans are expecting an adventure that is as lavish as it is massive – and these take time to make. Casey himself admits that they are in “early development” and if development started this year with a brand new studio, the question is really how far they can actually get before 2030.
What do you think, will they be ready for release by 2029 or earlier, or will it be 2030 or later?

French President Emmanuel Macron praises the success for Clair Obscur: Expedition 33

0

It became the first French title to with the prestigious Game of the Year award just before the weekend.
Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 set several records at The Game Awards. For example, it had more nominations than any other game, won more awards than any other game, and became the first French title to win Game of the Year at the gala.
This impressed just about everyone, including French President Emmanuel Macron. He commented on French developer Sandfall Interactive’s unprecedented success via Instagram, writing (translated using Bing):
“Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 was recently named Game of the Year in Los Angeles. A historic first for a French title!
It is a great honor for Montpellier and for France. Well done, Sandfall Interactive! For future generations and those who come after them!”
It is unclear whether Macron has actually played the game himself, but the last sentence is a nice nod to the game’s motto, and a phrase we heard several times, both during the Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 campaign and among the acceptance speeches at The Game Awards.
