Washington state faces historic floods that have washed away homes and stranded families

MOUNT VERNON, Wash. (AP) — Days of torrential rain in Washington state caused historic floods that stranded families on rooftops, washed over bridges and ripped…
Days of torrential rain in Washington state caused historic floods that stranded families on rooftops, washed over bridges and ripped at least two homes from their foundations, and experts warned that that flooding Friday could be catastrophic.
Washington is under a state of emergency and evacuation orders are in place for tens of thousands of residents. Gov. Bob Ferguson on Thursday urged everyone to follow evacuation instructions as yet another river neared record levels.
“I understand that many in our state have experienced significant floods in the past,” he said on the social platform X. “However, we’re looking at a historic situation.”
On Friday morning, officials in Skagit County said all residents in the city of Burlington, north of Seattle, should evacuate as the Gages Slough River began to overflow and send water into homes. The National Guard was going door to door notifying residents to leave and assist with evacuations, the county said on its Facebook page. Officials had hoped dikes and other systems would protect their community from catastrophe.
About 78,000 residents of a major agricultural region north of Seattle were ordered to evacuate the floodplain of the Skagit River, which was expected to crest Friday morning.
A number of rivers surpassed their flood stages overnight, including the Skagit at the towns of Concrete and Mount Vernon. It crested at more than 37 feet (11.2 meters) at Mount Vernon, according to weather service data.
The floods were impacting large parts of the state, with several bridges flooded and some major roads inundated or washed out. Some roads had no alternate routes and no estimated reopening time, including a large part of state Route 410.
A landslide blocked part of Interstate 90 east of Seattle, with photos showing vehicles trapped by tree trunks, branches, mud and standing water.
Further north near the U.S.-Canada border, the cities of Sumas, Nooksack and Everson were evacuated after being inundated. The border crossing at Sumas was closed and Amtrak suspended trains between Seattle and Vancouver, B.C.
Sumas Mayor Bruce Bosch said much of the city has been “devastated” by the high waters just four years after a similar flood.
The Snohomish River surged nearly a foot (30 centimeters) higher than its record Thursday in the picturesque city that shares its name, while the Skagit River had already broken its record as of Thursday night in Mount Vernon, according to the National Water Prediction Service.
The waters stopped just short of getting inside Mariah Brosa’s raised riverfront home in Concrete, but the raging river still slapped debris against her home and totaled her fiance’s work car, she said.
“I didn’t think it would come this high,” she said.
Flooding from the Skagit has long plagued Mount Vernon, the largest city in Skagit County with some 35,000 residents. Floods in 2003 displaced hundreds of people.
A floodwall that protects downtown passed a major test in 2021, when the river crested near record levels. Water was at the foot of the floodwall as of late Thursday morning, Mayor Peter Donovan said.
Authorities across Washington state in recent days have rescued people from cars and homes after the weather phenomenon known as an atmospheric river soaked the region.
Helicopters rescued two families on Thursday from the roofs of homes in Sumas that had been flooded by about 15 feet (4.6 meters) of water, while the city’s fire station had 3 feet (91 centimeters) of water, according Frank Cain JR., battalion chief for Whatcom County Fire District 14.
In nearby Welcome, erosion from the floodwaters caused at least two houses to collapse into the Nooksack River, he said. No one was inside at the time.
In a football field in Snoqualmie, a herd of elk swam and waded through neck-high water.
East of Seattle, residents along Issaquah Creek used water pumps as rushing floodwaters filled yards Thursday morning. Yellow tape blocked off a hazardous area along the creek.
Climate change has been linked to some intense rainfall. Scientists say that without specific study they cannot directly link a single weather event to climate change, but in general it’s responsible for more intense and more frequent extreme storms, droughts, floods and wildfires.
Another storm system is expected to bring more rain starting Sunday.

Google is finally fixing the most annoying thing about wireless ADB

0

Using ADB wirelessly can be frustrating due to connection issues, but a future Android release might solve that. Here’s how.
Android is getting a quality-of-life update that automatically turns on wireless debugging when connected to trusted Wi-Fi networks.
Currently, the feature automatically turns off after a period of inactivity, forcing users to constantly manually re-enable it.
The new behavior is live in the latest Android Canary builds, though a stable release might not happen until Android 16 QPR3 or Android 17.
One of the most powerful tools at an Android developer’s disposal is the Android Debug Bridge (ADB). This command-line tool lets you control your Android device from a PC, allowing you to quickly push new apps, view system logs, and much more. It’s also essential for tinkerers and enthusiasts looking to remove bloatware or access hidden features, explaining why so many non-developers also install it. While developers and enthusiasts may use ADB for different reasons, they agree on one thing: using it wirelessly sucks. Fortunately, Google is rolling out a small update to wireless ADB that should make it much less annoying.
For most of Android’s history, using ADB wirelessly was a cumbersome process. You had to physically connect the target device to the host PC via USB, configure the device to listen on a specific port, disconnect the cable, locate the target’s IP address, and finally connect to that IP. While functional, this method broke whenever the device’s IP address changed — a frequent occurrence without a static IP configuration.
Google dramatically simplified this setup with the release of Android 11 in 2020. You no longer needed an initial USB connection; instead, you could simply open Android’s Developer Options and select “Wireless debugging.” This menu displays the device name and IP address, along with options to pair via QR code or a pairing code.
Android Studio’s Wi-Fi pairing tool leverages these options, allowing developers to easily pair their device to a PC. Better yet, once paired, the devices automatically reconnect using multicast DNS (mDNS) for device discovery.
That’s the theory, anyway. In practice, wireless ADB is frustratingly inconsistent, plaguing developers with pairing issues and frequent disconnections. Worse, Android automatically disables wireless debugging after a period of inactivity, forcing you to manually re-enable it via Developer Options or Quick Settings. However, a future Android release may finally eliminate this hassle.
Since last month’s Android Canary release, my Pixel 8 Pro has consistently re-enabled wireless debugging without my intervention. Digging deeper, I discovered that Google quietly implemented a change that automatically enables wireless debugging when the device connects to a trusted network. This small tweak has made wireless ADB significantly more reliable on my Pixel. I used to default to a physical USB connection, but I’ve finally ditched the cable because my phone is now perpetually connected wirelessly.
I’m not entirely sure how this impacts Shizuku or other open-source Android apps that leverage wireless ADB, so I need to do more testing. Still, I’m hopeful this change will make wireless ADB less frustrating for anyone relying on it for development or in-app features. Hopefully, Google ships this feature soon; it is currently only active in the two most recent Canary releases. We might see it arrive as early as Android 16 QPR3 next March, though it’s possible it won’t land until the major Android 17 update.

ARC Raiders Players Have Already Found Another Out Of Bounds Exploit on Stella Montis

0

Just hours after one exploit is patched, ARC Raiders players discover yet another way to get out of bounds on the map Stella Montis.
Just hours after the last one was patched, another out-of-bounds glitch on Stella Montis has been discovered by the ARC Raiders community. Players have already taken to social media to share a new method that allows them to get out of bounds on ARC Raiders’ newest map, sparking outrage for those who just want to play the game legitimately. With the holiday period less than two weeks away, there is concern that it could be quite some time before developer Embark Studios gets around to releasing a new hotfix for the issue.
For weeks, a controversial exploit that allowed players to gain an unfair advantage over others was ruining ARC Raiders for many players. Rather bizarrely, this glitch didn’t require anything overly complicated, like using gadgets to phase through doors. Instead, there appeared to have been an invisible zipline on one particular area of the map that would take players straight through the ceiling and allow them to wander around the entire map without being visible to other players. For obvious reasons, this was a major issue. In competitive shooters like Battlefield 6 or Call of Duty, this would have been frustrating, but it was even worse in ARC Raiders due to it being an extraction shooter. This means that when you die, your stuff is gone, so being eliminated to a cheater is, of course, infuriating.
It took some time, but Embark eventually released a new ARC Raiders update on December 11 that fixed the exploit, along with a few other issues. Patch 1.6.0 was only a small hotfix, but it finally removed the zipline that was allowing players to go out of bounds on Stella Montis with ease. According to the patch notes, it also fixed a collision that allowed players to vault and fall through a wall in Blue Gate, which was another game-breaking exploit allowing players to get out of the map. Other changes included a fix for material issues that caused multiple objects to not block bullet fire or ARC vision, and a fix for a gap in the collision on Spaceport Launch Tower that allowed players to be shot through the wall.
Stella Montis Has Another Severe Exploit

Unfortunately, it hasn’t taken long for ARC Raiders players to discover yet another exploit on Stella Montis. Less than 24 hours after the new update went live, users took to Twitter to reveal that it was still possible to get out of the map, but this time with a different method. As seen in the clip below, it appears to be possible for players to get themselves stuck between two large machines by sliding between them. As it is then impossible for the player to escape, the game will issue a “fix stuck player” prompt. Holding the button to fix the stuck player will teleport them through the ceiling and out of the map, once again allowing players to roam freely without being seen and even eliminating other players.
Given that it took many weeks for Embark to finally fix the last Stella Montis exploit, it could, unfortunately, be quite a while before this one is addressed. To make matters worse, the holiday season is approaching, and Embark has already stated that the team is gearing up to take some much-deserved time off. In the most recent patch notes, the studio said its future updates will no longer be on weekly cadence as they have been since launch. “From now on, our release window and store rotation will shift to Tuesdays, however, as the winter holiday period approaches, the team will be taking a much needed break so that we can come back in January ready to bring more updates”, Embark said.
With that being said, there is a major new content update planned for December 16. ARC Raiders’ highly anticipated Cold Snap update will be released for free on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC, adding a new Snowfall map condition, a new event known as Flickering Flames, a new Raider Deck, and some fresh Quests for players to complete. It will also see the first Expedition departure window open, allowing players who are ready to reset leave the Rust Belt and experience a fresh wipe.

Why Was Sherrone Moore Arrested? Updates on His Charges After Michigan Firing

0

Sherrone Moore was arrested just hours after he was fired by the University of Michigan. Get updates on his charges and arrest here.
Sherrone Moore is having a difficult month. Just hours after he was fired from the University of Michigan for allegedly having an “inappropriate relationship” with a team staff member, he was arrested and taken into police custody on December 10, 2025. His charges weren’t immediately disclosed, but he was still in custody the next morning.
Moore made headlines when the school fired him as its football coach. In a public statement, Michigan’s athletic director, Warde Manuel said, “U-M head football coach Sherrone Moore has been terminated, with cause, effective immediately. Following a university investigation, credible evidence was found that Coach Moore engaged in an inappropriate relationship with a staff member. This conduct constitutes a clear violation of university policy, and U-M maintains zero tolerance for such behavior.”
So, why was Moore arrested? Here’s a breakdown of his legal situation and firing from Michigan.
According to the University of Michigan, Moore engaged in an “inappropriate relationship with a staff member.” The school cited “credible evidence” to back its claim and did not identify the staff member in question.
Moore’s arrest came hours after he was fired by Michigan. He was taken into police custody at the Washtenaw County Jail in Michigan at around 8:30 p.m. ET on December 10, 2025, according to multiple outlets.
While Moore’s charges are still unclear, USA Today and CNN reported that Pittsfield Township police were investigating an “alleged assault” without naming the suspect. The incident took place just 30 minutes before the University of Michigan announced Moore’s firing.
Per a statement from the police department, an unidentified suspect was arrested amid an “ongoing” investigation.
“Given the nature of the allegations, the need to maintain the integrity of the investigation, and its current status at this time, we are prohibited from releasing additional details,” the statement from the Pittsfield Township police read, per CNN. “Further details regarding the incident will be released as soon as permissible.”
According to TMZ Sports and Fox News, 911 dispatch audio (seemingly from Moore’s alleged assault case) indicated, “there’s a male at the location and the house attacking [a woman]” and added that the suspect had been “stalking her for months.” Moore’s name was not mentioned in the dispatch audio.
Moore’s exact charges were not listed and are still unclear at the time of publication. He is scheduled to be arraigned on December 12, according to Fox News.
Moore was still booked into jail on the morning of December 11, 2025, according to multiple outlets.
Yes, Moore is still legally married to his wife, Kelli Moore. Neither he nor his wife has publicly commented on his alleged affair nor his arrest.

Broadcom drags on Wall Street as worries about AI weigh

More drops for superstar stocks that soared in Wall Street’s frenzy around artificial-intelligence technology are weighing on the U.S. stock market. The S&P 500 slipped 0.5% Friday from its all-time high set the day before, while weakness for Broadcom and other tech stocks dragged the Nasdaq comp.
— More drops for superstar stocks that soared in Wall Street’s frenzy around artificial-intelligence technology are weighing on the U.S. stock market Friday.
The S&P 500 slipped 0.5% from its all-time high set the day before, and the weakness for tech stocks dragged the Nasdaq composite down a market-leading 1%.
Other WRAL Top Stories
But other areas of the market that previously got left behind by Big Tech are picking up some of the slack, and the Dow Jones Industrial Average was adding 90 points, or 0.2%, to its own record set the day before, as of 10:45 a.m. Eastern time.
Broadcom led the market lower and fell 10.2% even though the chip company reported a stronger profit for the latest quarter than analysts expected. Analysts called the performance solid, and CEO Hock Tan said strong 74% growth in AI semiconductor revenue helped lead the way.
But investors may have been concerned with some of Broadcom’s financial forecasts, including how much profit it can squeeze out of each $1 of revenue. The AI heavyweight may also have simply run out of momentum after its stock came into the day with a surge of 75.3% for the year so far, more than quadruple the S&P 500’s gain.
Broadcom’s stumble came a day after Oracle plunged nearly 11% despite likewise reporting a bigger profit for the latest quarter than analysts expected.
Doubts remain about whether all the spending that Oracle is doing on AI technology will end up being worth it. and how it will pay for it. Such questions are weighing on the AI industry broadly, even as many billions of dollars continue to flow in.
It’s a return toward Earth for AI superstars, which earlier had been the main engine propelling Wall Street higher. Other stocks that used to struggle with uncertainty about the U.S. economy’s strength and what the Federal Reserve will do with interest rates, meanwhile, are doing better.
The stocks in the Dow Jones Industrial Average, which has much less of an emphasis on tech, have been beating other indexes, for example. Gains of 1.5% for McDonald’s and 0.6% for Visa were two of the strongest forces lifting the Dow on Friday.
Now, investors are feeling more optimistic about interest rates. The Fed earlier this week cut its main interest rate for the third time this year and indicated another cut may be ahead in 2026. Wall Street loves lower rates because they can boost the economy and send prices for investments higher, even if they potentially make inflation worse.
The Fed’s chair, Jerome Powell, did hint on Wednesday that interest rates may be on hold for a while. But he helped soothe nerves when his comments appeared less harsh than some investors expected in shutting off the possibility of more cuts in 2026.
Stocks of travel-related companies were strong on Friday. Oil prices have eased this week, which should help trim their bills, and hopes are rising that easier interest rates will support the economy and encourage more people to take trips.
Norwegian Cruise Line steamed 3.1% higher, while Southwest Airlines climbed 3.2%. Along with them, the majority of stocks within the S&P 500 rose.
The biggest gain in the index came from Lululemon Athletica, which jumped 9.9% after reporting better profit and revenue for the three months through Nov. 2 than analysts expected. It also said its CEO, Calvin McDonald, plans to step down at the end of January following pressure to boost revenue.
In stock markets abroad, indexes were mixed in Europe following a stronger finish in Asia.
Stocks jumped 1.7% in Hong Kong and rose 1.4% in Tokyo for two of the world’s bigger gains.
In the bond market, Treasury yields rose. The yield on the 10-year Treasury climbed to 4.19% from 4.14% late Thursday.
