Sam Altman says OpenAI is testing new features by throwing 'a lot of compute' at them

0

Altman said because of the costs involved, some features will initially be limited to Pro users, while certain new products will have extra fees.
Sam Altman is bracing OpenAI users for pricier, compute-heavy products — and hinting at what’s next.
The OpenAI CEO said in a post on X on Monday that the company is launching “new compute-intensive offerings” over the next few weeks.
Altman said because of the costs involved, some features will initially be limited to Pro subscribers, while certain new products will have extra fees.
Altman framed the push as an experiment in stretching AI infrastructure to its limits: “We also want to learn what’s possible when we throw a lot of compute, at today’s model costs, at interesting new ideas”, he wrote.
The announcement adds on to OpenAI’s balancing act: making advanced AI accessible while covering the steep costs of compute. Altman said the company’s intention “remains to drive the cost of intelligence down as aggressively as we can and make our services widely available.”
“We are confident we will get there over time”, he added.
Altman and OpenAI did not respond to a request for comment from Business Insider. The race for GPUs
OpenAI has been vocal about its insatiable demand for computing power.
“Every time we get more GPUs, they immediately get used”, OpenAI’s chief product officer, Kevin Weil, said on an episode of the “Moonshot” podcast published last month.
Weil said the need for compute is simple: “The more GPUs we get, the more AI we’ll all use.” He highlighted that adding bandwidth made the explosion of video possible.
Altman said in July that the company will bring on more than 1 million GPUs by the end of the year.
“Very proud of the team but now they better get to work figuring out how to 100x that lol”, Altman wrote on X in July.
For comparison, Elon Musk’s xAI disclosed that it used a supercluster of over 200,000 GPUs called Colossus to help train Grok4.
Other tech giants have also been blunt about their appetite for GPUs.
Mark Zuckerberg said on an episode of the “Access” podcast published Thursday that Meta is making “compute per researcher” a competitive advantage and is outspending rivals on GPUs and the custom infrastructure needed to power them.

Huawei used its own silicon to re-educate DeepSeek so its output won’t bother Beijing

PLUS: India ponders tax breaks for datacenters; Samsung plans hiring spree; Taliban bans fiber internet; and more
Asia In Brief Huawei last week revealed that China’s Zhejiang University used its Ascend 1000 accelerators to create a version of DeepSeek’s R1 model that improves on the original by producing fewer responses that China’s government would rather avoid.
The University explained how it used Huawei chips to build a post-training framework that re-worked DeepSeek’s model so it achieved “nearly 100 percent success rate against 14 common malicious threats, including toxic and harmful speech, politically sensitive content, and incitement to illegal behavior.” The re-trained model, dubbed DeepSeek-R1-Safe, is also more resistant to jailbreaking. The University achieved those results with just a one percent performance hit compared to DeepSeek-R1.
Huawei and the University are also proud to have outperformed the Alibaba Cloud’s Qwen model in terms of producing results that comply with China’s content rules.India considers 20-year datacenter tax holiday
India’s government last week reportedly discussed draft plans to give a 20-year tax holiday to developers who build new datacenters.
New Delhi has already introduced many government digital services, built extensive broadband infrastructure, encouraged use of online services, and created a fund to create sovereign AI capacity. While major hyperscalers operate datacenters in India, the nation’s technology policy emphasizes developing self-sufficiency.
A tax holiday could therefore spur more development, and encourage local companies to consider investing.
They may need to move fast: Last Friday, Equinix announced the opening of its first International Business Exchange data center in the city of Chennai, India’s fifth-largest city.Taliban ban fiber internet access
Internet access over fiber optic cables is now illegal in the Afghan province of Balkh after the nation’s fundamentalist government reportedly banned it to curb immoral behaviour.
The Associated Press (AP) reports that the Taliban has promised to build an alternative network that runs on another physical layer.
Mobile internet services remain available in Balkh, but according to the AP residents find them frustratingly slow.Samsung to hire 60,000
Samsung last week announced its intention to hire 60,000 staff in the next five years.
The company plans to “significantly increase” the number of internships it provides to university students, and to use that program to identify talent.
Samsung already sponsors South Korea’s National Skills Competition and will continue to do so with a view to hiring technical talent the program identifies.
The company also hopes to help people in their later years with technology that can identify early markers of Alzheimer’s disease by tracking changes in cognitive ability by observing smartphone users’ keyboard input speed, message patterns, call frequency, and even their voices.MSI collabs with Hokusai
Taiwan’s MSI has created what might be the perfect laptop for admirers of Edo-period Japanese woodblock prints, in the form of the Prestige 13 AI+ Ukiyo-e Edition featuring a modern take on Hokusai’s The Great Wave off Kanagawa.
Aside from the striking art, the laptop offers an Intel Core i9, a 13.3-inch 2.8K (2880×1800) OLED display, 32GB of memory, and all-day battery life.

Caitlin Clark Delivers Strong Shoutout to Kelsey Mitchell After Fever's Playoff Win

0

Indiana Fever star Kelsey Mitchell got a prominent shout out from teammate Caitlin Clark after the team’s playoff win over the Las Vegas Aces.
The No. 6 seed Indiana Fever continued their impressive playoff run on Sunday, taking down league MVP A’ja Wilson and the No. 2 seed Las Vegas Aces with an 89-73 victory.
The Fever advanced to the semifinals of the 2025 WNBA playoffs following a 2-1 series win over the No. 3 seed Atlanta Dream this past week.
Kelsey Mitchell led the way for the Fever again on Sunday, recording a game-high 34 points, three assists and two steals. The All-Star guard connected on 12 of her 23 shot attempts from the field and 4 of her 6 shot attempts from behind the 3-point arc.
Mitchell has been excellent in the playoffs so far, averaging 26.0 points per game.
Immediately following the Fever’s win over the Aces on Sunday, Caitlin Clark took to social media with a shoutout for her All-Star teammate.
“Kelsey unreal”, Clark wrote on X.

Mitchell finished fifth in WNBA MVP voting, trailing Wilson, Napheesa Collier, Alyssa Thomas and Allisha Gray. The three-time All-Star averaged a career-high 20.2 points per game through 44 regular-season contests this season.
Clark dealt with a variety of injury issues throughout the 2025 WNBA season. She suffered left quad, left groin, right groin and left ankle issues, limiting her to just 13 appearances in her second pro season.
On Sep. 5, the 2024 WNBA Rookie of the Year announced that she would not return to the court for the Fever’s postseason run. She was left off the team’s active roster for the playoffs.

“I had hoped to share a better update, but I will not be returning to play this season. I spent hours in the gym every day with the singular goal of getting back out there, disappointed isn’t a big enough word to describe how I am feeling”, Clark wrote.
“I want to thank everyone who had my back through all the uncertainty. This has been incredibly frustrating, but even in the bad, there is good. The way the fans continued to show up for me, and for the Fever, brought me so much joy and important perspective. I am so proud of how this team has only gotten stronger through adversity this year.”
With a 1-0 series lead, Mitchell and the Fever will face off against the Aces in Game 2 on Tuesday night.

Jordan Davis' FG block, score caps off Eagles' win over Rams

Eagles defensive tackle Jordan Davis batted a 44-yard Joshua Karty field goal attempt with three seconds remaining, scooped it up and rumbled 61 yards for the touchdown to preserve victory for his team.
PHILADELPHIA — The last time the Philadelphia Eagles blocked two field goals in a single game was Sept. 21, 1975, against the New York Giants.
Fifty years to the day, history repeated, though this time it generated a walk-off winner that delivered a stunning 33-26 win over the Los Angeles Rams.
Defensive tackle Jordan Davis batted a 44-yard Joshua Karty attempt with three seconds remaining, scooped it up and rumbled 61 yards for the touchdown to deliver one of the more frenzied endings to a game in Lincoln Financial Field history. It completed a massive comeback for the Eagles, who trailed 26-7 early in the third quarter.
“I think the only walk-off win I’ve ever been a part of was the Buffalo game in ’23 and today, and it’s a great feeling”, coach Nick Sirianni said. “It’s an emotional game.”
That emotion spilled over into the back of the end zone. Fans leaned over the wall to lovingly slap Davis on the helmet and teammates swarmed from every direction to be part of the celebration.
Technically, it was a “No más” situation for the Eagles — players aren’t supposed to advance the ball in that situation, so as not to risk giving the ball back to the opponent — but no one was complaining. Davis, listed at 6-foot-6 and 336 pounds, reached 18.59 miles per hour on the return, the fastest speed by a player over 330 pounds since at least 2017, according to NextGen Stats.
“Maybe he has a future at running back”, Saquon Barkley said after learning how fast Davis ran.
“I was juiced”, safety Reed Blankenship added. “I didn’t know he was going to take it all the way back. But he’s got wheels. He lost what, 30-something pounds. He can move.”
Davis made getting in better shape a priority dating back to around the middle of this past season. He credits a better diet, extra workouts and Peloton for helping him drop excess weight.
He added five tackles, a sack and a QB hit to help the Eagles improve to 3-0 while the Rams exited with a stinging loss that dropped them to 2-1.
“As a man, you run to adversity”, Rams running back Kyren Williams said. “The people in this locker room, we run to that, we accept it. And for me, I know I’m more hungry now than ever because I hate the Eagles. . But they’re putting us through something that we need to get put through. And I’m glad that it’s happened this early in the season because it’s only going to [help] us for later on in the season.”
Shuffling along the Rams offensive line played a part in the blocked kicks, according to Eagles players. Los Angeles was already down left guard Steve Avila (ankle) entering the game. Right guard Kevin Dotson was in and out of the lineup during the second half. Dotson was not in on Davis’ field goal block, forcing backup lineman Beaux Limmer to slide further inside on the field goal attempt next to long snapper Alex Ward.
“[Assistant special teams coordinator Joe Pannunzio] is always talking to us during our special teams meeting, tells us when going through field goal block who the fish is, what side is the best side to rush”, said Jalen Carter, who also had a field goal block midway through the fourth quarter. “They had some injuries over there where they had to replace a guy. We took advantage of it and came out with the block. . They took the starting right guard out and they put No. 50 in. That’s what I just realized and seen. The coaches gave us a call, field goal block to the right, and we made it happen.”
Said Rams coach Sean McVay: “Yeah, Dotson was — the reality is, is that we’ve got to execute better and credit to them, they made the plays. I’m not going to make any excuses.”
Karty said that he thought he hit the final field goal try well and that the snap and hold was good.
“Yeah, it just kind of sucks”, he said. “I mean, kind of everyone on the team’s probably feeling the same emotion of we had the game within our control kind of the whole time and come out of here with the loss.”
For the Eagles, it was their first win after trailing by 19-plus points in the second half since 2010 Week 15 at Giants — a game known as the Miracle at the New Meadowlands, featuring a winning 65-yard punt return TD by DeSean Jackson with 14 seconds left in the 4th quarter.
They’ll look to ride that momentum into their Week 4 matchup at the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
“It’s exciting”, quarterback Jalen Hurts said. “It’s exciting because you can look back on the game and say, ‘What play will it be? Will this come back and bite us?’ You can think of all of these things and try and rationalize what happened or why something happened. Ultimately, when you stay in the moment and you play each play as its own and just go out there and give it your all, show it when the moment needs you to. There isn’t another group of guys that I want to play with when it comes to that.”

The 60th Anniversary Bronco Is A Sweet Throwback To The Original – Here's What To Know

0

Celebrating the SUV’s heritage, the Ford Bronco 60th Anniversary trim features an incredible new paint job, but has several new details and easter eggs as well.
It’s hard to believe, but the Ford Bronco turned 60 years old on August 11, 2025, and Ford whipped up a special edition to celebrate just that occasion. The Bronco’s legacy is one which helped shape SUV culture to this day, being one of the few worthy opponents to the early Jeep CJ. Like the CJ, the early-model Bronco prioritized a spartan, no-frills experience, with removable doors and top, a bathtub-like body with minimal features, and outstanding off-road capability. Over the years, however, it’s a nameplate which has graced a variety of vehicles, from those early compact utility vehicles, to full-size trucks in the ’80s and ’90s.
Such a long and storied legacy naturally deserves some recognition after such a milestone of 60 years, and Ford was happy to oblige with the 2026 Bronco 60th Anniversary Package. Obviously one shouldn’t expect the truest buggy-like experience of the original; this is still a 2026 model year car, after all, so temper your expectations there. Nevertheless, it’s still an incredibly capable off-roader (it should be, it’s a Bronco), and offers the full range of extras of any other top-shelf Ford truck.
Does it redefine the Bronco as we know it? Not exactly. Nor does it overdo it on the nostalgia, either: Most of the details are small Easter eggs, something which the Bronco lineup has proven itself as particularly suited to pulling off. This particular edition does contain some additional features inside and out, however, which should tickle the more detail-oriented owners. Let’s have a closer look under the hood. The mechanical changes
First off, let’s answer the question of whether or not this Bronco can actually hang with other high-spec models, and the answer is yes. Under that nostalgic skin rests a 2026 Bronco Outer Banks with a Sasquatch Package; considerably bolstering its off-road capability with features like factory front and rear electronic locking diffs, aggressive final drive ratio, lift kit with factory 35-inch Goodyear rugged-terrain tires, and Ford’s Advanced 4×4 system. This is a formidable beast of a truck, available with either the base 2.3L turbocharged or 2.7L twin-turbo EcoBoost. Sadly, Ford confirmed that this is, in fact, based off the Outer Banks model, which means no manual transmission option, even with the base 2.3L engine.
Aside from the lack of a third pedal, what else can one expect of the Outer Banks? According to the Ford configurator, the Outer Banks Bronco comes with various conveniences including Ford CoPilot 360, which has various functions such as auto-dimming headlights, lane-detection, blind spot information system, and so on. Additionally, the Outer Banks features other add-ons like rear parking sensors, front heated seats, dual-zone automatic climate control, and more. In short, this isn’t just a capable off-roader, but a comfortable one at that, like all the best Ford Broncos have been through the years.
All this couples with the otherwise redesigned Bronco exterior, meant to appeal to a more nostalgia-fueled crowd, especially in the front end. But that’s not all for the Anniversary Package, you’ll be getting various small details as well. What distinguishes the Anniversary Package from a normal Outer Banks with Sasquatch Package
The most obvious difference between a standard Bronco with all those aforementioned features and an Anniversary Package is the paintwork: Wimbledon White, to be precise. Wimbledon White is a historically-significant paint job for Ford, used on several of the company’s most famous vehicles, such as the original Shelby GT-350 — arguably one of the best-looking Mustangs ever produced — and the Bronco itself, of course. The Anniversary Edition features exactly two paint jobs: Wimbledon White with red accents, and Ruby Red with a Wimbledon White roof and white accents.
Those accents include a special decal package with “60” labels along either side, plus Vermillion Red center-caps on the bespoke wheels which harken back to the original’s; they’re inlaid with the bucking bronco decal along with “1966” on the top. Most of the accents on the interior carry over this design language, sporting red accents in the lettering and grab handles, plus a commemorative plaque prominently sat in the center console. Lastly, the Anniversary Package features various unique logos, including the fender side plate and exterior lettering, all of which are done in Vermillion Red.
As for the verdict: It’s effectively a cosmetic package loaded with details and Easter eggs throughout, a perfect truck for someone looking for something with a wink and nod to the juggernauts of old, without sacrificing modern amenities to do it. Moreover, being a Bronco, it’s right at home in its natural habitat of anywhere but pavement, possibly the best homage to the original it can be.

Acer Swift Go 16 (2025)

0

The Acer Swift Go 16 isn’t exactly a budget machine, but it packs a lot of great features for the price, prime among them a dazzling OLED display. Just don’t expect a ton of life out of the battery.
Sometimes users want a large-screen laptop for the obvious reason: They’re looking for a top-notch display for demanding tasks like video editing and 3D rendering. The market is full of those. But that’s not everybody. Other buyers are more interested in a large display for multitasking and media consumption—and don’t want to lug around a ton of laptop. That’s where Acer’s $1,149.99 Swift Go 16 comes in. It serves up a 16-incher that’s fast enough for productivity work and sports a gorgeous OLED display, but is also reasonably thin and light. This Acer’s not perfect—for one thing, the battery life is subpar—but the price makes it an attractive option. If you’re in the market for an expansive display that’s easy to carry, the Swift Go 16 is worth considering.Configurations: One Model, One Decent Value
The Swift Go 16 comes in only one configuration, at least in its 2025 iteration. I reviewed the SFG16-73-92RC model, which gives you an Intel Core Ultra 9 285H chipset, 32GB of RAM, a 1TB SSD, and a 16.0-inch WQXGA+ (2,880-by-1,800-pixel) OLED display.
All that will run you $1,149.99—an attractive price for such a well-configured laptop. Many other machines at the same price offer less RAM, less storage, and an IPS display. The Swift Go 16 isn’t exactly a budget model, but it’s a very reasonable value.Design: Skinny and Subtle for 16
The Swift Go 16 takes a minimalist aesthetic—the laptop fashion du jour—and adds some distinctive flourishes. The lid is decorated with a subtle geometric pattern, for instance, and underneath you’ll see a (mostly) unbroken black colorway. What’s more, the rear chassis edge has a slight angle, and the trailing edge of the display is offset a bit.
As I said, the Swift Go 16 is very thin and light: just 3.31 pounds, which would be reasonably lightweight even for a 14-inch machine, and a trim 0.66 inch thick. The bezels, too, are reasonably thin. Overall, this Swift is built to tote.
The chassis and lid are all aluminum, which gives it a premium feel. On the other hand, the plastic bezels detract from the design, and the machine doesn’t feel quite as sturdy as it looks. I found the lid just a little too bendable, and there’s a tiny bit of give in the keyboard deck, making the Swift feel a little less robust than some other laptops in the same price range. The feel’s not egregious, though, and many people probably won’t even notice.Keyboard, Touchpad, and Webcam: A Subpar Use of Lots of Space
A 16-inch laptop usually gives you a lot of room for a comfortable keyboard deck, but unfortunately, Acer chose to squeeze in a numeric keypad. Number crunchers and gamers will appreciate the feature, but this isn’t a gaming rig, and I’m sure most users would rather have larger keycaps and more generous spacing. Count me among them: To these fingers, the board felt a little cramped, which is a shame because the switches are light and snappy enough.
The frustration continues when you get to the touchpad. It’s smaller than it could be, with too much empty space above and below. While it’s responsive, with quiet, confident button clicks, a haptic-feedback design would have been superior. Beyond that, the pad comes with an intriguing feature: embedded LEDs that respond to whatever you’re doing, such as showing media controls when you’re playing a video. It’s a nice touch that would be a lot more useful were the touchpad a little larger.
The webcam checks in at 1440p, with excellent image quality for videoconferencing. Under the hood, the Swift Go 16’s Neural Processing Unit (NPU) efficiently speeds up AI tasks, and the machine supports Microsoft’s full suite of Copilot+ PC AI features. Acer also includes its AcerSense utility that lets you control various system settings, like performance and the multi-control touchpad.Display and Audio: That OLED, Oh My, Oh My
Here’s where the Swift Go 16 shines. The last few laptops I’ve reviewed had IPS displays, and I was reminded how great OLED looks as soon as I fired up the Swift Go 16. As usual with OLED, the inky blacks and dynamic colors jumped out—aided by support for True Black HDR500—and the WQXGA+ (2,880-by-1,800-pixel) resolution was sharp enough, even at the 16-inch display size. The refresh rate, meanwhile, clocks in at a fast and smooth 120Hz. Simply put, the Swift Go 16 delivers an excellent display for all kinds of work, including creative tasks and media consumption.
The two front-facing speakers weren’t quite as impressive. They dished up sufficient volume for watching YouTube videos and the like, with clear mids and highs. But bass was lacking, and the DTS:X Ultra Audio certification didn’t seem to be all that effective. You’ll want a good pair of headphones for music and streaming.Ports: A Good Spread
The port selection is solid, including two USB Type-Cs with Thunderbolt 4, two USB Type-A 3.2 Gen 1s, an HDMI 2.1 connection, and a 3.5mm audio jack. I also appreciated the the microSD card reader, something I’m seeing on fewer laptops lately. My one complaint: You need to use one of the USB-C ports for charging (another feature that’s getting annoyingly common).
The Swift Go 16 also comes with up-to-date Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 5.4 connectivity, and thanks to the Intel Killer wireless card, you’ll be able to take advantage of faster connectivity whenever the latest standard becomes more widespread.Performance Testing: Impressive Results (Barring Battery Life)
To see how the Swift Go 16 stacks up against its peers, I selected several laptops with similar components and prices. Two were in Dell’s new Plus lineup, the 16 Plus (an Editors’ Choice winner) and the 16 Plus 2-in-1 ($999.99 as tested), along with the spendy LG Gram Pro 2-in-1 16 ($2,549.99 as tested). I also included the Apple MacBook Air 15-Inch ($1,199 as tested) to pit the Swift Go 16 against Apple’s latest chipset for thin-and-light laptops.Productivity and Content Creation Tests
Our primary overall benchmark, UL’s PCMark 10, puts a system through its paces in productivity apps ranging from web browsing to word processing and spreadsheet work. Its Full System Drive subtest measures a PC’s storage throughput. Three more tests we rely on are CPU-centric or processor-intensive: Maxon’s Cinebench 2024 uses that company’s Cinema 4D engine to render a complex scene; Primate Labs’ Geekbench 6.3 Pro simulates popular apps ranging from PDF rendering and speech recognition to machine learning; and we see how long it takes the video transcoder HandBrake 1.8 to convert a 12-minute clip from 4K to 1080p resolution. Finally, workstation maker Puget Systems’ PugetBench for Creators utility rates a PC’s image editing prowess with a variety of automated operations in the popular image editor Adobe Photoshop 25.
In each of our benchmarks, the Swift Go 16’s Intel Core Ultra 9 285H—the fastest chipset in Intel’s Core Ultra 2 lineup—led this pack against the laptops with the slower Core Ultra 7. The Swift Go 16 turned in its most impressive performance in our Handbrake test, where it even beat the MacBook Air 15’s swift M4 SoC.Graphics Tests
We challenge each reviewed system’s graphics with a quartet of animations or gaming simulations from UL’s 3DMark test suite. The first two, Wild Life (1440p) and Wild Life Extreme (4K), use the Vulkan graphics API to measure GPU speeds. The other pair, Steel Nomad’s regular (4K) and Light (1440p) subtests, focuses on APIs more commonly used for game development to assess gaming geometry and particle effects. A fifth 3DMark test, Solar Bay, emphasizes ray-tracing performance.
The Swift Go 16’s Intel Arc 140V graphics were faster in most, but not all, of our graphics tests. Note that the latest Intel integrated graphics are more capable than previous generations, but they still fall behind even entry-level discrete graphics. Also, remember that none of these laptops is a gaming machine or suited for demanding creative tasks where the GPU provides most of the performance.Battery Life and Display Tests
We test each laptop’s battery life by playing a locally stored 720p video file (the open-source Blender movie Tears of Steel) with display brightness at 50% and audio volume at 100%. We make sure the battery is fully charged before the test, with Wi-Fi and keyboard backlighting turned off.
To gauge display performance, we use a Datacolor SpyderX Elite monitor calibration sensor and its Windows software to measure a laptop screen’s color saturation—what percentage of the sRGB, Adobe RGB, and DCI-P3 color gamuts or palettes the display can show—and its 50% and peak brightness in nits (candelas per square meter).
The Swift Go 16 is not a monster when it comes to battery life. Its 75-watt-hour battery—not a lot for a laptop with a 16-inch display—lasted just around 9.5 hours and wound up in last place in the comparison group.
However, the display itself turned in a terrific performance. The high-res, high-refresh OLED was very bright at 415 nits at 100% brightness, well above the 300 nits needed to overcome normal ambient lighting. Colors were also very wide, at 100% sRGB, 95% AdobeRGB, and 100% DCI-P3. And of course, black levels were essentially perfect, making this a great display for high dynamic range (HDR) content.

President Donald Trump and tech tycoon Elon Musk were spotted sitting together at the funeral service for conservative activist Charlie Kirk — marking their first public interaction since their bitter fallout earlier this year.
Musk, 54, was first witnessed alone in the stands at State Farm Stadium, where more than 200,000 mourners gathered to honor the slain Turning Point USA Founder.
Footage posted later to social media showed Trump and Musk seated beside each other in the stands, talking and exchanging an earnest handshake.
The interaction comes months after Musk departed from his role as the head of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE).
His exit followed public criticism of Trump’s sweeping “Big Beautiful Bill,” which the Tesla founder claimed undercut his budget-slashing efforts.
