The ‘Knights of Guinevere’ Pilot Brings Some Good, Surreal Sci-Fi

0

Glitch Productions’ latest animated series, the 2D sci-fi thriller ‘Knights of Guinevere,’ is more than some horror-tinged Disney potshots.
For years, animation fans have clamored online for new, original works to fall in love with alongside cherished, already established IP. After this summer’s KPop Demon Hunters provided a successful (and ongoing) bit of originality, that momentum continues with Knights of Guinevere, whose pilot premiered this past weekend on YouTube.
Created by Dana Terrace, Zach Marcus, and John Bailey Owen, the creator and key writers on Disney’s The Owl House, Guinevere feels at once like its own distinct, freaky thing while also being informed by the trio’s previous (and truncated) collaboration. That’s made clear right away at the start, where a young girl named Olivia Park is working on an android in a dark room. When her father, Orville, beckons her over, Olivia brings Gwen behind her using cords coming out of the android’s stomach, which look like intestines and are slathered in blue goo.
When she’s of age, Olivia is to inherit the Park Planet run by her father, a vibrant, Disneyland-looking place that touts Gwen as its key mascot, primarily as a princess but in additional outfits. The girl is stone-faced while hearing this information, but after dragging her Gwen droid around, the droid suddenly decides to escape by jumping off the building and falling into the ocean below. She’s not found until years later by Frankie, a factory laborer and scavenger living in the city of M7 with her park engineer friend Andi. While unaware of the value of this specific Gwen droid, Frankie thinks fixing it could help her rise above her station and get a better Park Planet gig.
Not much information is explicitly doled out about Park Planet, to which we’re kept at a literal distance from in both the past and present, since it floats high above the planet, occasionally dumping its trash into the ocean below. Where the script tells us nothing, the visuals convey everything; a montage after Gwen’s escape chronicles the park’s rise to fame and glory, which is then contrasted with snarky fan comments about morphing Gwen into a girlboss heroine and other theme park controversies. The city below seems to have no love for the orbiting attraction or anyone associated with it and any real capacity, possibly owing to an illness some of its citizens seem to have.
Like The Owl House or Steven Universe, Knights of Guinevere uses wide shots and background details to convey a history the show is unable (or unwilling) to fully spell out at this juncture. Everything about Frankie and Andi’s world makes clear why they’d want to leave M7 by any means possible while still finding comfort in living with each other. As the first 2D animated series from Glitch Productions (late of The Amazing Digital Circus and The Gaslight District), the studio picked a great project to start with. There are shades of Owl House in the world and character designs while still feeling like its own thing, and it never feels out of place when the show switches from the cold, grungy real world to glimpses of a better, happier world that the Park Planet ads try to convey.
All three of the leading women are compelling in their own ways, but the star of the piece right now is Frankie. Michaela Laws and the character’s design imbue her with a lot of scrappy charm and she looks to be the heart of the show as everything else around her threatens to fall apart. The relationships she has with both Andi and the Gwen droid will drive the plot and seem very fascinating from what we get here, and both Laws and Andi’s actor, Zelda Khan Black, bounce off each other very well.
Since this is a pilot, the other characters get just enough material to make them interesting in later episodes, particularly Frankie’s dad, Sparky, and an older version of Olivia that’s become obsessed with “fixing” Gwen.
As for Gwen herself, the show lays enough breadcrumbs to become invested or concerned in whatever’s happened to her in the past and present. Vocally, Eden Riegel gives a great Disney Princess (and delivers a great scream out of nowhere), and with how the camera lingers on her decayed form and placid smile, it’s hard not to want answers for how she got to this state.
Knowing this creative team and Owl House’s affinity for body horror, it’s likely the revelations to her whole deal will be unpleasant without feeling unearned or feeling too out there for the premise. Despite being a prop desired by the other characters, she’s treated with a good amount of sympathy in every scene she’s in, and it’ll be interesting to see how the show further characterizes her through her fairy tale-like perspective.
Given the way things publicly shook out with Owl House and the very clear digs at how Disney runs the princess side of its business, it’d be easy for Knights of Guinevere to coast on those jabs while exploring the darker side of a massive corporation in a sci-fi setting. Present as that all is, it’s just a part of the show rather than the entire thing, and what’s here more than stands on its own. The metrics thus far have shown it’s a success, and count us invested to see where this all goes next.

Trump wypomniał ONZ zepsuty prompter i niedziałające schody ruchome

Secret Service, NYPD bust plot to disrupt NYC telecom service (UPDATED)

0

The equipment seizure was announced the week that World Leaders address the United Nations.
The U.S. Secret Service, investigating threats to three people, including one person with “direct access” to President Donald Trump, discovered a plot to take down the New York City telecommunications system. The agencies involved are being tight-lipped about the incident because a foreign government was said to be involved. The news broke on Tuesday morning as the United Nations (UN) General Assembly kicks off its General Debate with World Leaders prepared to give speeches.
While the Secret Service wasn’t sure that the attack on New York City’s telecom system was connected in any way with the UN meetings, the Secret Service felt that it should not take any chances, especially in light of the political climate in the U.S. at the moment. As a result, it is actively investigating other locations to see how widespread the plot is.
The Secret Service and the New York Police Department (NYPD) said that last month they seized 100,000 cellphone SIM cards and hundreds of servers in the New York City area. Authorities are still trying to determine what all of that equipment was supposed to do and if there was a specific target. One report said that there was enough equipment discovered to send 30 million anonymous texts per minute, enough to paralyze the Big Apple’s telecom system.
All of the confiscated equipment was discovered within 35 miles of the UN, and agents believe that the gear was used by nation-state actors to send encrypted messages to organized crime groups, cartels, and terrorist organizations.
The servers could have been used to make multiple calls and texts, overwhelming local networks. The special agent in charge of the Secret Service’s New York field office, Matt McCool, said, “It can’t be understated what this system is capable of doing. It can take down cell towers, so then no longer can people communicate, right? . You can’t text message, you can’t use your cell phone. And if you coupled that with some sort of other event associated with UNGA (UN General Assembly), you know, use your imagination there, it could be catastrophic to the city.”
McCool added that “This network had the power to disable cell phone towers and essentially shut down the cellular network in New York City.”
A photo disseminated by the Secret Service showed stacks of SIM cards from MobileX, an MVNO that uses the Verizon network for connectivity. It was founded by Peter Adderton who also founded Boost Mobile. Mobile X released a statement this afternoon about the photo:
“We are aware of recent reports that MobileX SIM cards, along with those of other providers, were recovered during a federal investigation. Our platform is designed to be easy to use and cost-effective, qualities that unfortunately can also attract occasional bad actors. MobileX has robust safeguards in place to identify and block automated or bulk usage, and we shut down suspicious activity on our network every day.”
“Like all wireless providers, we occasionally see bad actors attempt to misuse our services. Our technology and processes are specifically designed to detect and stop any misuse in order to protect both the network and legitimate customers. We are fully prepared to cooperate with the authorities should they reach out.”
Investigators say that they do not believe there is a direct threat to the UN talks. The BBC reported that the equipment could have texted every person making up the population of the U.S. in only 12 minutes. By overwhelming the system with texts, the seized gear could have disabled cell towers and launched distributed denial of service attacks that might have blocked the dispatch of first responders in the event of a massive attack against the city.

Mexican megachurch leader Naasón Joaquín García pleads not guilty to sex trafficking charges

0

An unsealed indictment accused García of using his position as head of La Luz del Mundo (The Light of the World) church to sexually abuse children and women.
— Mexican megachurch leader Naasón Joaquín García pleaded not guilty on Tuesday to sex trafficking charges during his first appearance in a New York federal court, where he is charged along with his 79-year-old mother with sexually abusing generations of young followers.
Two weeks ago, an unsealed indictment in Manhattan accused García, 56, of Los Angeles, of using his position as head of La Luz del Mundo (The Light of the World) church to sexually abuse children and women. The indictment said his father and grandfather, both deceased, did the same before him.
At a hearing before Judge Loretta A. Preska, García listened to a Spanish translator through headphones and sometimes spoke English.
After García pleaded not guilty, Assistant U.S. Attorney Elizabeth Espinosa said there was an enormous amount of electronic evidence in the case, including evidence from a 2019 California state prosecution that led to a prison sentence of more than 16 years, which García is currently serving.
She said over two dozen additional electronic devices were seized two weeks ago during raids on three locations in the Central District of California, which includes Los Angeles.
Prosecutors said photos and videos of child sex abuse have been seized.
The church was used for sex trafficking of women and children in the United States, Mexico, Europe, Asia, Africa, and elsewhere, according to court documents, which said the church claims a presence in over 50 countries and millions of members worldwide, although reliable membership statistics are not available.
In the United States, the church has locations in California, New York, Nevada, Texas, Georgia, Indiana, North Carolina, South Carolina, New Jersey, and Washington D.C., among other places, prosecutors said.
As the leader of the church, García was considered the “Apostle,” and church members were taught that God will punish and eternally damn anyone who doubts the Apostle, fails to follow his teachings or defies the Apostle, prosecutors said in a court document that successfully argued that bail not be granted to García’s mother.
Prosecutors say they have seized hundreds of child pornography images that were created at García’s direction and sent to him via cellphone.
They also said García enriched himself and others by forcing church followers to work in construction or as nannies, aides, accountants, cleaners and other jobs for long hours with no pay.
A lawyer for Garcia did not immediately return a request for comment on Tuesday.
Two weeks ago, attorney Alan Jackson, representing García, called the indictment the result of “a reckless campaign of government overreach.”
Nicholas Biase, a spokesperson for prosecutors, said the investigation is continuing and urged anyone victimized in the case to call the prosecutor’s office or email them at USANYS.LLDM@usdoj.gov.”
García’s next hearing was scheduled for Dec. 15.

Super Typhoon Ragasa: at least 14 killed in Taiwan as Hong Kong and southern China brace for impact

Deadly flood crashes through Taiwan’s Hualien county as barrier lake bursts its banks as typhoon continues its path
Deadly flood crashes through Taiwan’s Hualien county as barrier lake bursts its banks as typhoon continues its path
The bursting of a barrier lake in Taiwan has killed at least 14 people and left dozens missing, officials have announced, after Super Typhoon Ragasa pounded the island with torrential rains, bringing widespread damage to parts of east Asia.
The outer rim of Super Typhoon Ragasa has been bearing down on Taiwan since Monday as its path moves down towards the southern Chinese coast.
The barrier lake, formed by landslides triggered by earlier heavy rain in Taiwan’s east, burst its banks mid-afternoon on Tuesday, sending a wall of water into the Guangfu township.
“As of 7 am [Wednesday], 14 people are confirmed dead and 18 were reported injured,” said Lee Kuan-ting, a Hualien county government press official.
“Thirty missing was the figure last night, released by the National Fire Agency, and our teams are still searching,” he added.
Ragasa had already toppled trees, torn the roofs off buildings and killed at least two people while ripping through the northern Philippines, where thousands sought shelter in schools and evacuation centres.
Hong Kong and parts of southern China were on high alert on Wednesday as Ragasa approached with powerful winds and rains, forcing Chinese authorities to shut down schools and businesses in at least 10 cities.
In Hong Kong, classes were to be suspended on Tuesday and Wednesday, though the stock exchange adopted new rules this year to keep markets open during typhoons.
There were no flights out of Hong Kong after 6pm Tuesday, according to the airport’s website. Cathay Pacific earlier said that more than 500 of its flights were set to be cancelled.
The super typhoon was generating maximum sustained winds of 195km/h near its centre while moving west across the South China Sea, according to Hong Kong’s weather service.
The Hong Kong Observatory issued its highest typhoon warning, T10, at 2.40am on Wednesday, saying it will “remain in force for some time” as Ragasa comes closest to the territory later in the morning.
It also warned of significant swells and storm surge as the storm moves through, with some areas potentially seeing water levels four to five metres above normal.
An AFP reporter saw waves nearly five metres high smash into the seaside promenade of Hong Kong’s Heng Fa Chuen residential district around nightfall.
Terence Choi, a Hong Kong resident, said he had stocked two days’ worth of food at home, adding that he was “quite nervous” about the prospect of the housing estate losing power and fresh water supply.
Yang Lee-o, who has lived in the coastal neighbourhood of Lei Yue Mun for 40 years, said government workers had already spent a day placing sandbags.
Hong Kong’s number-two official, Eric Chan, previously said Ragasa would pose a “serious threat” comparable to the super typhoons of 2017 and 2018, which cost hundreds of millions in property damage.
Scientists warn that storms are becoming more powerful as the world warms due to the effects of climate change.
Ragasa – named after the Filipino word for rapid motion – is expected to make landfall in the central and western coastal areas of Guangdong within 24 hours, the province’s emergency management bureau said on Tuesday morning.
Shenzhen in China’s south-east earlier ordered the evacuation of 400,000 people.
Emergency management authorities in the Chinese tech hub said that except for emergency rescue personnel and those ensuring people’s livelihood, “do not go out casually”.
Other cities in the southern province of Guangdong that are implementing the measures include Chaozhou, Zhuhai, Dongguan and Foshan.

3,000 Pounds of Poke From Costco Recalled for a Surprising Reason

0

The recall covers 33 states.
Have you recently purchased Kirkland Signature brand Ahi Tuna Wasabi Poke from Costco? You should check to make sure it wasn’t part of a new recall.
Western United Fish Company (also known as Annasea Foods Group) of Kent, Washington, has issued a recall for 3,314 pounds of Kirkland Signature brand Ahi Tuna Wasabi Poke packed on Sept. 18, 2025, with a sell-by date of Sept. 22, 2025.
The recall is over concerns about Listeria contamination, which can be fatal among young kids, the elderly, and people with weakened immune systems. Otherwise healthy people can still have serious symptoms from listeria infection, including high fever, bad headaches, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain, and diarrhea, according to the FDA.
The poke was packaged in plastic clamshell containers with Kirkland Signature branding, though it was produced by Western United Fish Company/Annasea Foods Group. Consumers are being told to dispose of the product immediately and request a full refund from their local Costco.
The concern over listeria is actually focused on the green onions that were included in the product rather than the raw fish.
“This recall was initiated after being notified by our green onion supplier of a Listeria monocytogenes positive test result in the green onions which were used only in Ahi Tuna Wasabi Poke on 9/17/2025,” the company said in a statement posted to the FDA website. “We are continuing to work with our green onion supplier to determine the root cause.”
The states where the poke has been recalled:
Listeria can be a very serious problem. Back in June, chicken fettuccine alfredo meals sold at Kroger and Walmart were recalled after 17 people became ill and 3 people actually died, according to NPR. It turned out they were contaminated with listeria. One woman also lost a fetus, which is why pregnant people are advised to be particularly alert when recalls over listeria happen.
Experts have expressed concern over the Trump regime’s cuts to America’s food safety monitoring programs in recent months. The CDC quietly cut back the Foodborne Diseases Active Surveillance Network (or FoodNet), which tracks foodborne illness, according to a startling report from the New York Times. And one of the concerns is that most people won’t really notice the change until it’s too late. In a country of over 330 million people, a handful of people dying from a given outbreak is barely noticed. But if food safety regulators don’t have the data to spot an outbreak, those handful of deaths can grow unnecessarily.
Consumers with any questions about the Costco poke recall are being encouraged to contact Western United Fresh Co./Annasea Foods Group by calling 425-558-7809 between the hours of 10 a.m. and 6:30 p.m. ET (7 a.m. to 3:30pm PT) Monday to Friday, or to email: [email protected].

Liquid Glass Is Cool, But This Is the iOS 26 Feature That's Worth the Upgrade

0

Apple’s new, translucent UI has received lots of buzz, but the amazing 3D effects of Spatial Scenes are the real reason to download iOS 26.
Liquid Glass is an iOS 26 UI reimagining that brings a slick system-wide translucent quality to your iPhone. I like the fresh new look, but it has snatched the spotlight from one of iOS 26’s more compelling features: Spatial Scenes. This new generative AI tool transforms your photos into eye-catching 3D wallpapers you can use on your iPhone’s Home and Lock screens. The new images also react to your phone’s movements in a way that must be seen to be believed. After spending more hours than I care to admit tinkering with it, I can confidently say Spatial Scenes elevates iOS 26 to a must-have update.
Don’t miss out on our latest stories. Add PCMag as a preferred source on Google.Spatial Scenes Creates Amazing Wallpaper and Photo Imagery
I like the glassy look, graphical flourish, and customization options Liquid Glass brings, but not everyone is happy with it. Some complaints include poor text readability, confusion from blurred backgrounds, and even dizziness. Spatial Scenes, on the other hand, introduces plenty of iPhone customization, looks fantastic, and has few issues.
First, I tried Spatial Scenes to create custom wallpaper; you enable it by heading to the wallpaper customization menu and tapping the hexagonal badge. Spatial Scenes uses AI to analyze and create a depth map for virtually any photo with a clear subject. In testing, I found it works on almost any image, including portraits, illustrations, or an AI-generated image saved to my phone. The result was an absolutely stunning parallax effect. When I tilted my iPhone, the background elements shifted subtly behind the foreground elements in each image, creating a persuasive illusion of depth.
I transformed an old castle interior photo into a Spatial Scene, which added a cool layering effect to the pillars. Moving my iPhone made them slightly shift in 3D. As a Pokémon card collector, I love eyeballing the effects and textures applied to rare cards; Spatial Scenes scratches the same itch. Applying the visual effects quickly became an addiction, as I scoured my photos eagerly for images to enhance. Recommended by Our Editors
That’s the other great thing about it; you can also use Spatial Scenes in the Photos app. The same hexagonal badge appears under the More button in the Photo app for any compatible image in your library. I tapped the badge on one, and my iPhone generated a fantastic Spatial Scene in a literal second. The results were near-magical. Much like Android’s Cinematic Wallpapers, I spent hours browsing through my Photo app, breathing new life into older photos and making old memories feel new again. It’s worth updating to iOS 26 for this feature alone.A Few Growing Pains
iOS 26 is only a week old, so as I expected, I experienced a few hiccups while tinkering with Spatial Scenes. It works well with most photos, but not all. For example, the option was unavailable for a low-angle photo I snapped of a castle flanked by trees. Images incompatible with Spatial Scenes lack the hexagonal badge icon. It didn’t surprise me because this photo had no outstanding foreground elements. Finding one I couldn’t transform into a beautiful 3D picture was a bummer, but close to 95% of my photo library was compatible.
Another minor gripe: Apple is still a bit controlling in displaying your Spatial Scene image as a wallpaper. When converting a photo into a wallpaper, Apple automatically adjusts and zooms the image for an optimal view. However, sometimes this cuts off more of the image than I would like—but if I zoom out to get a better view, my iPhone deactivates Spatial Scenes to accommodate it. It’s a little irritating that it works this way. I would love to see Apple loosen its grip so that I could freely customize my photo as a wallpaper in all its depth-enhanced glory, rather than how Apple wants me to use it.A Cool Tool for Enhancing Photos and Wallpapers
Spatial Scenes is the “wow” factor that pushes iOS 26 customization to the top as its most impressive feature. It even beats Android’s Cinematic Wallpapers, thanks to its more dynamic motion and lifelike quality. The eye-popping holograph effect complements the translucent new Liquid Glass elements, making your Home and Lock Screens look spectacular. If you love personalizing your phone, download iOS 26 and give Spatial Scenes a try. I’ve been hooked since installing the new mobile operating system and don’t see an end to my 3D photo creation. And I’m eager to see how Apple expands upon the image-enhancing technology in the future.
