About 900 hikers, guides and other staff who were stranded by a weekend snowstorm on the Chinese side of Mount Everest have reached safety, state media said late Tuesday.
About 900 hikers, guides and other staff who were stranded by a weekend snowstorm on the Chinese side of Mount Everest have reached safety, state media said late Tuesday.
A severe storm struck the area Saturday night, cutting off access to where the hikers were staying in tents at an altitude of more than 4,900 meters (16,000 feet).
In all, 580 hikers and more than 300 guides, yak herders and other workers were stranded. About 350 hikers were able to descend by noon Monday and the rest had arrived by Tuesday, state media said, citing the local government.
Some hikers reportedly had hypothermia, and the official Xinhua News Agency said about a dozen of them were escorted to a meeting point by teams with food, medicine, heating and oxygen supplies.
The scenic area at Mount Everest in China’s Tibet region has been temporarily closed. The 8,850-meter (29,000-foot) peak, the world’s highest, straddles the border with Nepal.
The storm struck during a weeklong holiday that ends Wednesday. Many Chinese travel at home and abroad during the holiday, which marks the anniversary of the start of Communist Party rule in China on Oct. 1, 1949.
In Nepal, a South Korean climber died in a weekend storm near the summit of Mera Peak, a 6,476-meter (21,250-foot) Himalayan mountain south of Everest.
Early-season snowstorms hit at least two other areas in western China over the weekend, killing one person and stranding motorists on an icy and snowy highway near a scenic hiking spot.
More than 200 people were evacuated from a remote and rugged valley in the Qilian Mountains in Qinghai province. One person died of hypothermia and altitude sickness.
The area is undeveloped, and authorities later warned people against entering without permission, citing the difficult terrain, unpredictable weather and an average altitude of more than 4,000 meters (13,000 feet).
In northwest China’s Xinjiang region, the Kanas scenic area was closed after a snowstorm Sunday that stranded motorists on a nearby highway. The road had been cleared by Monday, state media said.

Ex-FBI director James Comey to appear in court on lying to Congress charge

Case marks significant step in Trump’s efforts to politicize the justice department and punish political enemies
The former FBI director James Comey is set to make his first appearance in court on Wednesday in connection with federal charges that he lied to Congress in 2020.
Comey will be booked and fingerprinted, which is normal practice for defendants, at the federal courthouse in Alexandria, Virginia, before being arraigned and formally read the charges against him by US district judge Michael Nachmanoff. Nachmanoff was appointed to the federal bench by Joe Biden in 2021.
The FBI has reportedly been weighing whether to submit Comey to a “perp walk” in which they would parade him in front of media cameras. An FBI agent was reportedly relieved of duty for refusing to participate in such an effort.
The brief indictment handed down by a federal grand jury on 25 September accused Comey of making a false statement and obstructing a congressional investigation in connection with his September 2020 testimony to Congress. While the details of the charge remain unclear, they appear to be related to his claim that he never authorized anyone in the FBI to be an anonymous source in news stories. “I have great confidence in the federal judicial system and I’m innocent. So let’s have a trial. And keep the faith,” Comey said in a video statement the night the charges were filed.
The case against Comey marks a significant step in Donald Trump’s effort to politicize the justice department and punish his political enemies. Even though the attorney general and top justice department officials are political appointees, the department has typically operated at arm’s length from the White House in order to preserve independent decision-making necessary to uphold the rule of law. Trump has upended that norm and has said more charges are coming.
Trump fired Comey in 2017 and has fumed at the former FBI director for years for his role in investigating connections between Trump’s 2016 campaign and Russia. Comey’s firing eventually prompted the appointment of special counsel Robert Mueller to take over the investigation. Mueller’s final report detailed numerous instances in which Trump attempted to influence the investigation.
Trump forced out Erik Siebert, the top federal prosecutor in the eastern district of Virginia, after Siebert determined there wasn’t sufficient evidence to bring charges against Letitia James, New York’s attorney general. At Trump’s request, the justice department replaced him with Lindsey Halligan, a White House aide who was part of Trump’s personal legal team and has no prosecutorial experience.
Career prosecutors in the eastern district of Virginia reportedly presented Halligan with a memo outlining why charges against Comey were not warranted. In an unusual move, Halligan presented the case herself to a federal grand jury, which handed down the indictment just a few days after she started on the job.
No career prosecutors from the eastern district of Virginia have entered an appearance in the case. Instead, two prosecutors from the eastern district of North Carolina, Nathaniel Lemons and Gabriel Diaz, will join Halligan in handling the case.
Two other prosecutors in the eastern district of Virginia have been fired since the charges against Comey were filed. The prosecutors, Maya Song, a top Siebert deputy, and Michael Ben’Ary, a top national security prosecutor, both at one point had worked under Lisa Monaco, a top official in the justice department under the Biden administration.
Trump has also put pressure on the office to file charges against James over specious allegations that the New York attorney general committed mortgage fraud.
“We can’t delay any longer, it’s killing our reputation and credibility,” Trump told Bondi in a brazen 20 September post on Truth Social, asking her to bring charges against Comey, James, and California senator Adam Schiff. “JUSTICE MUST BE SERVED, NOW!!!”
Elizabeth Yusi, a top prosecutor in the office, plans to present the case to Halligan soon that there is no probable cause to file charges against James. Colleagues expect Yusi to be fired.

Landslide in northern India hits a bus, killing at least 15 people

At least 15 people have died after debris from a massive landslide hit a bus in India’s northern state of Himachal Pradesh
At least 15 people were killed late Tuesday after debris from a massive landslide hit a bus in India’s northern state of Himachal Pradesh, local authorities said.
The bus was traveling on a hilly stretch near Bilaspur district when a landslide struck following days of torrential rains. There were at least 20 to 25 passengers on the bus at the time. Nine men, four women and two children were among those killed, police said.
Three injured children were rescued and admitted to a local hospital for treatment, according to a statement from the office of Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu, the state’s highest-elected official.
Rescue operations continued Wednesday trying to find other missing passengers who are believed to be dead, police said.
Intermittent rains have lashed the region since Monday, making the fragile mountain slopes unstable.
President Draupadi Murmu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi offered their condolences following the deadly landslide.
Extreme rains this year have caused flooding and landslides across the South Asian region, which includes India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Sri Lanka, Afghanistan, Maldives and Nepal.
Flash floods swept away an entire village in India’s northern state of Uttarakhand in August, while at least 44 people were killed in neighboring Nepal over the weekend due to mudslides and flooding triggered by severe rainfall.
The weekend’s heavy rainfall arrived at the end of Nepal’s monsoon season, which usually begins in June and ends by mid-September. It also left parts of the capital, Kathmandu, flooded and caused the cancellation of all domestic flights on Saturday.
Experts say human-caused climate change is intensifying South Asia’s monsoons, which traditionally run from June to September and again from October to December. The rains, once predictable, now arrive in erratic bursts that dump extreme amounts of water in short periods, followed by dry spells.

Tesla bietet abgespeckte Modelle günstiger an

Musk selbst sagte, Tesla stünden “einige schwierige Quartale” bevor.

For the first time in years, T-Mobile is vulnerable, and this is what Verizon's new CEO should do

0

Verizon has a new CEO with wireless experience, and an aggressive approach could help end T-Mobile’s reign.
Earlier this week, Verizon stunned the wireless industry by replacing CEO Hans Vestberg after eight years. Taking Vestberg’s place is Daniel Schulman who was the carrier’s lead independent director. Schulman has experience in the wireless industry having put in 20 years running AT&T and he also helped get Virgin Mobile off the ground. Most recently he was the CEO at PayPal.
With a new person at the helm of the nation’s largest carrier, analysts say that Verizon’s rivals need to be prepared as Schulman works to reduce costs, and put Verizon back on a track where it is delivering strong long-term growth. On Monday evening, the day that Verizon announced the change at the top, Sam McHugh, head of telecom equity research at BNP Paribas, wrote, “The market is clearly worried about Verizon becoming more aggressive again in wireless to defend share.”
After Verizon announced that it had a new CEO on Monday, investors sold AT&T and T-Mobile shares as they worried that Verizon’s new CEO would take actions that would hurt the competition in the wireless sector. AT&T and T-Mobile’s shares bounced back today with the former rising 1.12% and the latter recouping 1.21%.
From the closing price on July 31, 2018 (the day before Vestberg took over at Verizon) to the close on Oct. 3, 2025, Verizon shares declined 15%. AT&T’s shares rose 12%, T-Mobile’s soared 285%, and the S&P 500 increased 138% over the same time period.
Verizon has performed poorly compared to T-Mobile and AT&T
In a note to clients written on Tuesday, New Street Research analyst David Barden said that since Vestberg became CEO, Verizon organically added 5 million postpaid phones lines while the industry added about 55 million postpaid phone lines. What this means is that if Schulman does a better job as Verizon’s CEO, the carrier could be more competitive, which could hurt AT&T and T-Mobile.
Barden also pointed out when Hans started at Verizon, it collected 20% of annual industry postpaid phone net adds. Over the last four years, that share has dropped to an average of only 5% which puts Vestberg’s tenure at Verizon in perspective. The analyst expects Verizon to cut consumer prices, which would be a major change from the price hikes Verizon subscribers have experienced over the last four years.
This could put pressure on T-Mobile and AT&T to cut prices. Or, as UBS analyst John Hodulik wrote in a note to clients on Monday, “Greater focus on subscriber growth may impact growth at T-Mobile and AT&T while putting additional pressure on broadband sub trends at Comcast and Charter once Verizon’s convergence strategy is brought to bear.”
This is a big moment for Verizon. With T-Mobile in disarray amid fears that it will become a digital carrier, and AT&T not putting pressure on T-Mobile, if Verizon can make some customer friendly moves, it might be able to finally stop T-Mobile’s long streak of scoring outstanding quarterly gains. For this to happen, Verizon might have to bite the bullet price-wise for a year or two.
What Verizon should do now, in addition to cutting prices, is let the public know that it will keep its stores open and not become a digital wireless provider. After all, Verizon already has such an animal with its Visible unit. If Schulman is smart, the incoming CEO of Verizon should take a stand on reps adding certain items to customers’ bills that they did not order. He should say that Verizon is doing away with the tracking of all metrics and monthly performance goals.
With a new CEO, now is the time for Verizon to take the high road. Even though such things also take place with Verizon reps at Verizon stores, Schulman needs to announce that Verizon will no longer tolerate this kind of activity from its reps. For the first time in years, T-Mobile is vulnerable, and the ball is in Verizon’s court.

Blue Jays turning to opener to start Game 4 in potential Yankees advantage

Hard-throwing righty Louis Varland, who gave up the bone-crushing, game-tying, three-run homer to Aaron Judge on Tuesday night, will start Game 4 as an opener before the Blue Jays piece the rest together.
Opposing Cam Schlittler on the mound for Game 4 on Wednesday: a parade of Blue Jays relievers.
As if that was not enough of a potential advantage for the Yankees — at least on paper — they forced the Blue Jays to use six of their 10 relievers on Tuesday while coming back from a five-run deficit to win a 9-6 thriller in Game 3 of the ALDS at Yankee Stadium.
Hard-throwing righty Louis Varland, who gave up the bone-crushing, game-tying, three-run homer to Aaron Judge on Tuesday night, will start Game 4 as an opener before the Blue Jays piece the rest together.
“You’re trying to take chances to win today, and it didn’t work out,” Blue Jays manager John Schneider said. “Everyone is available [Wednesday].”
The Blue Jays started Kevin Gausman, Trey Yesavage and Shane Bieber for the first three games of the series, but opted to carry an extra reliever on their roster over a fourth starter, which would have been either Max Scherzer or Chris Bassitt.
But the Yankees were able to knock Bieber out of the game after just 2 ²/₃ innings on Tuesday, forcing the majority of the Blue Jays bullpen into the game.
That came after the Blue Jays used seven different relievers following Yesavage’s dominant Game 2 start on Sunday before an off-day Monday.
“I get how it looks with the bullpen game [Wednesday] and all that kind of stuff,” Schneider said of his early hook of Bieber. “Man, these guys are going to be ready to go.”
For the second straight game, Aaron Boone considered starting Paul Goldschmidt over Ben Rice at first base Tuesday night, only to stick with the young slugger over the veteran.
Once again, it was a testament to the belief the Yankees have in Rice to change the game in one swing.
“It’s what I believe the threat of Benny is,” Boone said before Rice went 0-for-3 with a sacrifice fly.
Rice’s sacrifice fly, which extended the Yankees lead to 9-6 in the bottom of the sixth, came off lefty reliever Brendon Little. Goldschmidt then replaced him at first base in the top of the seventh.
Boone indicated that he would be more inclined to add a fourth right-handed hitter to the Yankees lineup for Game 4, wanting better balance against the bullpen game, which could mean starting Goldschmidt at first or Amed Rosario (who doubled and scored in the fifth inning after popping out as a pinch hitter in the third inning) at third.
Boone and a trainer came out to check on José Caballero in the eighth inning after the utility man took a big swing and aggravated a finger injury he has been dealing with the past few months.
But he remained in the game to hit a single.

Gold hits record-breaking 4,000 dollars mark

Investors flock to the safe-haven asset as central banks signal further interest rate cuts.
We just got the news that gold surged past the 4,000-dollar mark for the first time, extending a historic rally driven by geopolitical tensions and expectations of lower interest rates in the United States. The precious metal has been one of the strongest performers this year, buoyed by central bank purchases, inflows into gold-backed ETFs, and a weakening dollar. Political unrest in multiple regions has added to the safe-haven appeal, while investors weigh the impact of the ongoing US government shutdown on economic indicators. Other precious metals also gained, with silver, platinum, and palladium posting solid increases. What do you think about this? Global cryptocurrency markets held its breath as Binance Coin (BNB) surged past the $1,300 mark. That means the coin is set to reach a new all-time high of approximately $1,335 in the coming days.
The new rally propelled BNB to become the third-largest cryptocurrency by market capitalization, currently standing at $182.6 billion, surpassing established tokens like XRP and Tether (USDT).
BNB’s performance reflects a broader resurgence of investor confidence and growing strength within the Binance ecosystem.

Several key elements are contributing to BNB’s impressive ascent:
Explosive Volume Growth: BNB’s trading volume has seen a significant increase, indicating strong buying interest.
Deflationary Tokenomics: Binance continues to conduct strategic token burns, which reduce the circulating supply of BNB and enhance its scarcity.
Ecosystem Expansion: The BNB Chain, encompassing BNB Smart Chain (BSC), opBNB (L2), and BNB Greenfield, is experiencing record activity, with daily on-chain volumes reported around $4.14 billion. This growing adoption in decentralized finance (DeFi) highlights the utility of BNB as the native token for transaction fees and smart contract execution within the network.
Institutional Backing: There is increasing institutional interest in BNB, with large financial institutions exploring digital asset products with Binance and viewing BNB as an institutional-grade reserve asset.
BNB’s rise above XRP and Tether also signals a shift in market preferences towards utility-driven assets with strong ecosystem backing. BNB’s value is increasingly tied to its utility within the Binance ecosystem, including trading fee discounts, staking rewards, and participation in token launches via Binance Launchpad. Meanwhile, Tether maintains its role as a key stablecoin for liquidity, and XRP focuses on institutional payments.
Technical analysis suggests that if the current momentum continues, BNB could target resistance levels near $1,520.80. However, potential profit-taking could lead to short-term corrections.
On the other hand, regulatory developments concerning Binance or the broader crypto market could impact trust and potentially destabilize BNB’s value in the future, so caution is advised. Sustaining long-term growth will depend on the continued real-world adoption and activity within the BNB Chain ecosystem.
