Check out Digital Trends’ roundup of the best new crowdfunding projects and product announcements that hit the web this week. On our list for this week are a wearable A. I. assistant, a flexible umbrella, and a multicharger for all of your Apple devices, among other things.
At any given moment, there are approximately a zillion different crowdfunding campaigns happening on the web. Take a stroll through Kickstarter or Indiegogo and you’ll find no shortage of weird, useless, and downright stupid projects out there — alongside some real gems. We’ve cut through the fidget spinners and janky iPhone cases to round up the most unusual, ambitious, and exciting new crowdfunding projects out there this week. Keep in mind that any crowdfunding project — even those with the best intentions — can fail, so do your homework before cutting a check for the “gadget of your dreams.”
Here’s a quick excerpt from our full article: “Launched on recently Kickstarter, the Norrland Parka is essentially the Swiss Army knife of winter jackets. As you would expect, it is made from materials designed to keep us warm in temperatures as low as negative 22-degrees Fahrenheit, while also keeping wind, snow, and rain at bay. Beyond that, it includes a surprisingly amount of functionality that could make it especially enticing for gadget-loving outdoor enthusiasts. Those features include pockets made for holding smartphones, tablets, and earbuds, as well as a secure wallet pocket that is RFID shielded. Other handy storage areas include a sunglasses pocket and another for storing a passport. There is even a designated pocket for carrying an Apple Pencil, although if you don’t own one of those the zipper comes with an attached stylus as well.
Of course, keeping your gadgets powered up while on the go can be a challenge, particularly in cold temperatures. To help with that, the Norrland Parka comes with a 6,000 mAh battery pack, which can route power directly to the smartphone and tablet pockets. Perhaps the parka’s most intriguing feature is its onboard Wi-Fi hotspot. The device can provide internet access to up to five other gadgets at any given time, with the hotspot name and password found on the inside of the pocket that holds it.”
Pantyhose are arguably one of the most fragile consumer products in existence. If you do so much as sneeze too hard, they’re likely to rip, tear, or get a run in them. But what if it didn’t have to be like this? What if there was a pair of pantyhose that was strong enough to be used more than once or twice before it was inevitably tossed in the trash? Well, thanks to miracles of modern materials science and a company called Sheertex, the dream of indestructible hosiery is finally a reality.
“Did you know that the last real innovation in hosiery was the invention of Spandex in 1959?” the creators ask on their Kickstarter campaign. “Leading brands are happy selling you a product that they know can disintegrate in a single wear. In fact, over 1 billion pairs end up in the landfill each year. We decided enough was enough, so we invented a pair of sheers that is literally unbreakable in the hands of even your strongest friend, but that looks and feels just like traditional sheers
Speaking of single-use products that needlessly fill up our landfills — let’s talk about cling wrap. Ever since it was invented back in the late 1940s, it’s been used as a go-to method for food preservation. It’s undeniably effective for wrapping food and acting as a temporary lid on containers — but it’s also not particularly easy to reuse, so it typically gets tossed in the trash after serving its purpose. Wouldn’t it be better if our food storage techniques weren’t directly tied to the creation of waste?
That’s precisely the idea behind Food Wrap — an innovative and profoundly simple new take on cling wrap. “Food Wrap has been created first and foremost to solve one of the biggest problems remaining in the kitchen: how to wrap food without using single use plastics but also be stress-free to clean and manage.” the creators explain on Kickstarter. “Food Wrap easily wraps your food items exactly like cling wrap! But, when you’re done, you can place it in the dishwasher (or hand wash) and reuse over and over again for years to come!”
Tired of the images you can capture with your stock camera lenses? Check out Lomography. The NYC-based lens company has been making oddball lenses for years, and is now back on Kickstarter with its tenth (tenth!) project: the Lomogon. It’s essentially an art lens that’s equipped with some unusual/unique features that make it particularly well-suited for street and travel photography.
“Built to deliver unmistakable pictures by enhancing colors and contrast, the Lomogon is similar to the character of the Lomo LC-A+” the creators explain. “Its perfectly round apertures produce one-of-a-kind, circular bokeh – different from any modern-day lens. With a 32 mm focal length and a minimum focusing distance of only 0.4 m, the Lomogon allows you to get dramatically close or wonderfully wide. Designed for speed, the dial-styled aperture mechanism goes from f/2.5 to f/11 in a split second – you won’t ever miss a moment again.”
We’re living in the golden age of camping and outdoor recreation gear. Want proof? Name any outdoor product, and there’s pretty much guaranteed to be a foldling, ultracompact, and portable version of it. We’ve got tents, cook stoves, tables, chairs, and even solar-powered hot dog cookers that are small enough to fit in a backpack. Now, we can add yet another item to the list: the humble fire pit. Thanks to a recently-launched Kickstarter project, you might soon be able to bring a fire pit with you wherever you go.
“Now and then, everyone enjoys some time around a campfire with friends or family,” the creators write on their Kickstarter campaign page. “However, an open fire is now less and less allowed and it’s not always easy to bring a big and heavy fire pit. Therefore we designed Folding Fire. Folding Fire is a lightweight and foldable fire pit. She is made to be the perfect companion for all your adventures! Due to her compact size, she is easy to carry and can be set up within seconds!”
