Some tips on how to avoid miscreants deceiving your code
Adversarial attacks that trick one machine-learning model can potentially be used to fool other so-called artificially intelligent systems, according to a new study.
It’s hoped the research will inform and persuade AI developers to make their smart software more robust against these transferable attacks, preventing malicious images, text, or audio that hoodwinks one trained model from tricking another similar model.
Neural networks are easily deceived by what’s called adversarial attacks, which input data producing one output is subtly changed to produce a completely different one. For example, you could show a gun to an object classifier that correctly guesses it’s a gun, and then change just a small part of its coloring to fool the AI into thinking it’s a red-and-blue-striped golfing umbrella. Now you can potentially slip past that smart CCTV camera scanning the crowd for weapons.
This is because machines can’t tell the difference between real or fudged inputs, and will continue to operate all the same, despite spitting out incorrect answers. Adding a few pixels here and there causes an image of banana to be classified as a toaster. And it’s not just a problem that affects computer vision systems: natural language models are vulnerable too.
So far, most attacks have been demonstrated by feeding AI systems poisoned input data during inference, or the final decision-making stage: the part where the software predicts what it’s looking at, or listening to, and so on.
This involves trial and error if you, the attacker, do not know how the models work internally. If you’re trying this against a production system, you could face consequences if the attack fails: for example, you could set off security alarms, result in a facial-recognition system identifying you, trigger an AI-based network monitoring system, or otherwise give the game away that you’re trying to game an AI application. And that’s no good.
Another tactic involves practicing the attack on your own in-house neural network before trying it on a production target. In order for that to work efficiently, and not end up in more time-consuming trial and error, with consequences when you fail, you need something called transferability. That allows you to design an attack that works against your own neural network, and should work against another AI program is a black box to you.
“Transferability captures the ability of an attack against a machine learning model to be effective against a different, potentially unknown, model,” a group of researchers from the University of Cagliari, Italy, and Northeastern University, United States, explained in an arXiv-hosted paper this week.
Success relies on how vulnerable the target model is, how complex the surrogate model is, and how closely they both align with each other. Being able to test adversarial attacks against a dummy model that works similarly to the real one suggests those attacks will transfer better. It seems bleeding obvious because, well, if a brick can be thrown through your own window, it most probably can be thrown through your neighbor’s similar window.
But this is the world of academia where things, rightly, need to be proved, explained, and researched, before they can be assumed and taken for granted, especially in the wibbly unpredictable and misunderstood world of machine learning.
Matthew Jagielski, coauthor of the paper and a PhD student at Northeaster University, told El Reg these dummy models can be used to attack commercial machine-learning systems in the cloud.
“There is really a lot of good work on making these attacks possible in a setting where you don’t have access to the true model,” he said. “If the adversary can collect some amount of training data or query the model enough, they can get a good enough surrogate where it’s definitely possible to run an effective attack.”
It’s not too difficult to choose or build an effective surrogate model from which to craft a transferable adversarial attack, Ambra Demontis, first author of the paper and a researcher at the Uni of Cagliari, explained to The Register .
“I think that today more information is public and there are more tools that an attacker can exploit, it is easier for an attacker to threaten a machine learning system,” said Demontis.
Open source models can, we’re told, be used as dummy models to practice crafting adversarial examples.
Demontis explained that if adversaries wanted to trick an image-recognition model, for example, by giving it pictures flecked with noise to fool it into identifying whatever was pictured as something completely different, then choosing a classifier that doesn’t over-fit too much to the training data is a good start. As for AI developers, the team has offered advice in their paper on how to avoid transferable attacks.
“The lesson to system designers is to evaluate their classifiers… and select lower-complexity, stronger regularized models that tend to provide higher robustness to both evasion and poisoning,” the researchers concluded. ®

John Mulaney’s musical bodega sketch was another
The best sketch from the previous season of SNL was, without question, “Diner Lobster.” John Mulaney wrote it years prior with Colin Jost, but it didn’t “past the table.” (Or as Vultureput it, during “the sketch’s first table read a decade ago, nobody laughed. It died a quick and brutal death.”) But “Diner Lobster” went over so well with viewers — nearly five million views on YouTube (it also won an Elly Award from the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, which is apparently a thing — that it got a spiritual sequel during tonight’s episode.
The action in “Bodega of Love” takes place not in a diner, but, well, a bodega, complete with the world’s most disgusting toilet. Which is to say, every toilet in every bodega. “Diner Lobster” was all Les Misérables songs (including the wonderful pun, “Clawsette”), but “Bodega of Love” has selections from Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory, Little Shop of Horrors, Cats (you better believe there’s a bodega cat, played by Kenan Thompson), and Rent. Like Mulaney’s monologue, the sketch probably resonates more with New Yorkers than someone who’s never had to ask for a key attached to a brick to use the restroom, but if you can’t enjoy a singing toilet, I don’t know what to tell you.

Michael Cohen’s 2019 Senate felt like one of the first truly momentous political moments of the year. However, for a certain portion of the population the burning question the sprang up from the hearing wasn’t “Will any action be taken to further investigate claims made in Cohen’s testimony?” but was, instead, “What will SNL have to say about the Cohen hearing?” SNL’s Cohen hearing cold open mostly served as a recap for some of the most absurd moments and most memorable personalities of the hearing, but the sketch also made an effort to point out one crucial detail from Cohen’s background that it seemed wasn’t discussed much during the actual hearing.
There’s no secret that the strategy of many Republicans serving on the committee was to discredit Cohen’s testimony by pointing out that he was a known liar, having previously lied to Congress while under oath. Representative Jim Jordan, played on SNL by former cast member Bill Hader, stated that Cohen not to be trusted by the Republicans, Democrats, or anyone else. In the sketch, however, Cohen (played once again by Ben Stiller) pointed out that one group that had trusted him in the past was the Republican National Committee, for whom he served as the deputy finance chair. While this didn’t come out explicitly at the hearing, the SNL cold open didn’t hold back on their belief that the Republicans dug themselves into a hole by attacking their former deputy finance chair.
Elsewhere in the sketch, SNL poked fun at Representative Paul Gosar, played by Kyle Mooney, and his visual aide displaying a picture of Michael Cohen with the words “Liar Liar Pants On Fire!”. Later, Alex Moffat portrayed Rep. Mark Meadows, parodying the moment where he presented a black employee of Donald Trump’s as proof that the President is not racist. While the sketch had a strong focus on the Republican effort to discredit Cohen, the sketch also found an opportunity to crack a few jokes at the expense of Representative Debbie Wasserman Schultz and their shared New York accents.
While they had plenty of jokes to make about the other Representatives on the committee that asked questions of Cohen, the only person that SNL didn’t seem to have a joke to make about was Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, who was played once again by Melissa Villaseñor. The sketch had a joke towards the beginning when Elijah Cummings, played by Kenan Thompson, teased a “performance by Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez,” acknowledging that viewers were likely excited for her incisive questioning. Thompson’s Cummings took a moment before the end of the sketch to point out that, judging from some of the comments made earlier in the hearing, the hearing didn’t seem like it was intended for the well-researched line of questioning that had been prepared by AOC.
While Cohen’s testimony was only one small chapter in a much larger story, SNL’s cold open served as a reminder that it’s up to everyday Americans to research the public figures involved in government, because otherwise some of the hearing’s viewers may have never known that Cohen used to be employed by the RNC that supports some of the same people that grilled him.
From 5G to folding phones, Huawei had plenty to showcase at MWC Barcelona 2019
MWC is in full swing, and there have been a slew of great announcements from the show. Huawei’s presence at the show was certainly in full force, and the company made some great reveals during their keynote as well as at their booth.
Here are five things that we spotted at Huawei’s MWC booth that’s worth talking about:
Huawei’s flagship announcement at MWC was the Mate X, and it absolutely blew us away. The sleek design, and massive 8” screen you get when you unfold it, and the futuristic look and feel of the device is enough to get people talking.
While we’re yet to know a confirmed release date for the Mate X, it’s a great indication of where phone technology is heading, as users crave the flexibility of having a large screen for media consumption, and a regular-sized screen for everyday use.
5G was everywhere at MWC, but Huawei were leading the pack with several announcements at their booth. Not only did they showcase the 5G-enabled Mate X, but the company also signed up various new partnerships to deploy 5G hardware across various countries and scenarios.
It also introduced the Huawei 5G CPE Pro, which supports both 4G and 5G wireless connections, and allows a 1GB download to complete in under three seconds on 5G.
If you’re in the market for a sleek laptop with powerful internals, then the updated MateBook X Pro is a great choice. The massive 91% screen-to-body ratio is gorgeous to stare at, and if you’re concerned about privacy, Huawei have cleverly hidden the webcam under a button on the keyboard, so you can quickly pop it up only when you need it.
With no shortage of ports and an equally attractive design, the MateBook 14 is another excellent laptop to consider if you’re looking for a laptop upgrade this year. The touchscreen supports the same proprietary, touch-based cut-and-paste tool that the MateBook X Pro does, which could make sharing screen shots and other content a little easier.
It’s powered by either an Intel i5 or i7 processor, with the latter coming with more memory and dedicated Nvidia MX 250 graphics. A fingerprint reader embedded in the power button also makes it easy to log in without fumbling over passwords.
Another laptop that Huawei unveiled was the MateBook 13, which packs plenty of power and performance. Powered by up to the 8th Generation Intel Core i7-8565U processor and NVIDIA GeForce MX150 GPU, its improved cooling performance helps the notebook stay cool and silent even when running intensive processes. The laptop features a 3:2 FullView display with 10-point multi-touch option and a screen-to-body ratio of 88 percent.
As with Huawei’s other laptops, the MateBook 13 features Huawei Share 3.0, which allows quick transfer of files and text between a PC and the smartphone.
The two were doing a bit about meat baskets, and it quickly fell apart.
There’s an art to cracking up through a comedy bit. Harvey Korman, on The Carol Burnett Show, was the master of it. In the SNL sketch about UFO abductees from a few years ago, Ryan Gosling couldn’t keep it together in front of Kate McKinnon. It should be unprofessional, but on SNL busting up can be the thing that makes a sketch special.
On the latest Weekend Update, there was, alas and alack, no return of Stefon, despite the presence during the episode of both Bill Hader and host John Mulaney, with whom Hader used to write the monologues. Instead, we got a random thing about meat farmers. Their names were Vaneta and Wylene Starkie, they hailed from the Deep South, and they were played by Kate McKinnon and Aidy Bryant.
The sketch was okay. It had a promising hook: The Starkies were responding to a market that was decreasingly meat positive by only selling meat by “animals that are individually stupid and bad.” For instance, some meat was from a cow “who bit a kid in the weiner.”
McKinnon and Bryant are talented enough performers to transcend the slightly-above-average writing. But the thing that proved truly funny stemmed from a total accident: The meat basket prop apparently smelled really, really funky. Even McKinnon — who can keep a straight face through anything — lost it early and often.
It was a thing of beauty, and eventually they roped co-anchor Colin Jost into their shenanigans, pushing the rancid basket of meat in his face, knowing that a sketch that could never atone for the lack of Stefon still put a smile on everyone’s faces, including those on-screen.
