Mobile Test-Driven Development: Part 3 Mobile Test-Driven Development: Part 3

0

This series explores best practices for code quality in iOS and Android mobile development. This post is about writing and running NUnit Lite tests from an IDE.
This post is the third in a series about TDD in mobile development. The previous part of this series can be found here.
This post shows how we can have test driven development for mobile. We will look at options for running our tests from within our IDE and finding the right test runner for our development environment without the need to launch an emulator or deploy to a device every time we want to run the tests.
In the previous post, I showed you how to use NUnitLite to write unit/integration tests on Android and iOS. This post shows how you could write your unit tests with NUnit framework and run them from your IDE.
NUnitLite does not have a test runner that can be used outside of the mobile OS. This holds true for both Android and iOS. That’s why every time we need to run the tests, we have to deploy into a real device or a simulator/emulator to run the tests. Now, this could be okay and is necessary for some platform-specific logic. However, in most cases, we do not have to test the code on the exact platform. Take the example that we had in the previous post:
This code is just plain C# code that could be placed outside of the platform specific code and could be used on multiple platforms, and could then be tested conveniently using NUnit.
This brings us to using PCL (Portable Class Libraries) . The beauty of using PCLs is not only in sharing code across multiple platforms, but it also enables us to test our code using full frameworks like NUnit or Microsoft Test (although I would really stick with NUnit) . Bear in mind that PCLs are evolving and every day there are quite a few packages for PCLs coming up.
Some developers might argue that it is troublesome to write your code in PCLs since it adds restrictions and only allows you to use a subset of. NET that is supported on all configured platforms. This could be true, but you can get around it in one of three ways:
I normally use PCL profile 78 or 158. This gives me the two main platforms that I am working on Android and iOS, plus some later versions of Windows phone (8.1) , and Silverlight. You do not have to use a profile that tries to support older versions, and you will have fewer limitations by following this approach.
Installing Nuget packages is a great way of doing PCL. Whenever I am trying to do something that is not supported in the. NET subset, I look up the Nuget store, and most of the time I find that somebody has already developed a package that I can just use directly. The other nice thing about Nuget packages is that Nuget supports distributing multiple platforms’ libraries. This means that sometimes you get a package that supports Android and iOS. In this case, you would find two separate folders under /lib (inside the Nuget package) , one folder for each platform (Android, iOS) . In some other cases, Nuget may give you a portable library where you would get folders (under /lib) , like portable-win81+net54+ etc. This means that the dlls inside this folder could be used and referenced from within this kind of profiles (Platforms) . This is great news because you could just use the code without worrying about changing anything. Examples of such packages are as follows:
a. SQLite. NET-PCL b. PCLWebUtility c. Microsoft. Bcl d. Microsfot. Bcl. Build e. Microsoft. Bcl. Async e. Newtonsoft. Json
Sometimes your logic has to have a platform specific version. Let’s say you are doing something with animation or cryptography where you need to use the platform specific libraries. The best way to go about this is to have an abstraction that gets injected into the libraries/classes that depends on these (platform-specific) components. This means that your classes/libraries do not have any dependency on the platform specific code. It is only dependent on abstraction. During run-time, you could inject your platform specific implementation via any IoC container, or even manually. I have a full post on IoC in Cross-platform here. Also, it is worth looking at SQLite. NET-PCL implementation as it follows this approach exactly.
MVVM is a great approach for developing software because it ensures that your business logic is not coupled to any presentation layer/component. There is even MVVMCross which allows you to build apps in a cross-platform fashion. However, I do not prefer to go with MVVMCross because it adds much more complexity than I need, and in case I need to develop and change something out of the framework, then I would need to invest a lot in learning and building workarounds. Therefore, what I do is just stick with my ViewModels. This means I take advantage of the MVVM pattern by having my ViewModels holding all my business logic code and injecting these ViewModels into my controllers/presenters. The ViewModels could also have other services, factories, repositories injected into them (using IoC container or manually) and that way our code is all cross-platform and very testable.
As you can see from above, our logic is now sitting in the ViewModel and it is all testable regardless of the platform. This also makes it easy for us to use any test framework and test runners. This includes NUnit or Microsoft Test. It gets even better; we could even have our test libraries targetting. NET 4.0 or 4.5, which means we could use all the goodness of. NET in writing our tests. This includes using FakeItEasy and RhinoMock.
Now that we have all this great setup, we can look at running our tests. For using Microsoft Test, this comes out of the box, so there’s no need to install anything extra. If you prefer using NUnit like me, then you could install the latest version of NUnit (this includes the adapter and the runner) . However, there is an even better way: you could just install NUnit Adapter (with Runner) from the Nuget store. This will make the NUnit adapter and runner part of your solution and you will need to install the framework on all developers machines and your build server (as we will see in the Continuous Integration Server setup later) .
To start writing your test, you could create a class library that targets. NET 4.0 or. NET 4.5, and install NUnit Adapter Nuget package, and start writing your tests like below:
In conclusion, I have demonstrated in the last three posts how to have mobile test-driven development. I hope this motivates you to start looking at improving your code quality and employ some of the tactics we talked about here. If you have any comments and questions, I would love to hear them, so get in touch.

4 Business Intelligence Users You'll Encounter in Any Company 4 Business Intelligence Users You'll Encounter in Any Company

0

The 4 BI users you’ll encounter at any company include the data analyst, the executive, the business user, and the IT team.
Once upon a time business intelligence was the domain of IT teams and data analysts. IT was like the gatekeeper of analytics, with departments having to rely on them to prepare the data and churn out reports for their BI projects.
Not anymore. Over the past few years, as technology has evolved, businesses have had a choice of solutions offering analytics and visualization capabilities that open up business intelligence to everyone.
It’s a good thing, right? All of a sudden, businesses can get insights from previously unexplored data sources and forgotten branches of the business are discovering new insights that could change the strategic direction of the company, helping you gain competitive advantage.
Now, an organization will have different types of business intelligence users, which brings both benefits and challenges. One of the biggest challenges is getting a handle on who’s accessing and using the data that’s available.
Before data spirals out of control, let’s take a look at some of those business intelligence users who’ ll be working with your precious business data.
The whole point of bringing business intelligence to the masses is to embed BI across entire organizations, making data a part of how they conduct their business and streamline operations, and to bring agility to the whole process.
One of the biggest bonuses of handing responsibility for data reporting over to individual business intelligence users is that it enables on-demand reporting, with ad-hoc reports allowing users to get more specific insights that answer a specific query.
With more power given to business users, there’s the risk of IT teams taking their eye off the ball. While business intelligence users no longer need the technical skills that they used to, IT are needed more than ever, and there’s even greater need for data governance to ensure the success of BI.
Gartner predicted that, in 2017, less than 40% of Self-Service Business Intelligence initiatives would be governed sufficiently to prevent inconsistencies that adversely affect the business. And BARC said something similar in the recent BI-Survey when it recommended a Data and Tool Governance framework, plus closer alignment between IT, the business, and business intelligence users to prevent the total loss of control over data.
Actually, benefits of business intelligence are being felt across departments, in all industries. Data has become central to all roles, although product and market-driven results are more noticeable when you’ re looking at the bottom line.
For instance, analytics can guide the sales cycle and help marketing teams target leads. In HR, business intelligence comes into its own, helping businesses manage one of their important assets: people. HR holds a gold mine of information that can help with compensation planning, or link people to financial performance, for example.
We’ ve talked about business intelligence use cases in a previous post — with some ingenious ways organizations and individuals are leveraging the power of data .
We’ ve drilled down into our very own data to find out who are the key players in business data reporting.
The data analyst, as the name suggests, lives and breathes data. A statistician by nature, they will drill deep down into data, looking for fresh insights that will be used to underscore business strategy. The role includes documenting all your business data, identifying patterns and creating reports and dashboards that will support the decision-making process.
The CEO, of course, is at the helm of the business, driving the company’s success by improving operational efficiency and constantly looking for ways to reduce costs.
Meanwhile, Gartner once described analytics as the “combustion engine of business.” So business intelligence and the CEO seems like a match made in heaven.
Business intelligence gives an organizational overview that allows the CEO to spot trends across the entire structure of the business — insights that can support:
Business intelligence users can come from across the organization. We often talk about two types of business users: the casual business intelligence user and the power user. The difference is that a power user has the capability of working with complex data sets, while the casual user will make use of dashboards to analyze predefined sets of data.
Generally, the business user is often a manager, who is looking for ways to help a department operate more efficiently and more effectively. This type of business user is often untrained in using BI tools but is capable of picking up the basics of reporting and can use business intelligence successfully to report on business activities. Often they’ ll undergo further training and become fully equipped to perform more in-depth analysis.
IT is another key player in the BI process. The IT user still plays a central role – maintaining the infrastructure and giving departments the tools that allow them to fulfill their own data requests – however, the role has become more rounded.
These days, IT will cooperate much more closely with departments and the business as a whole. It’s their job to ensure that business users are getting the most from data analytics, and they’ re also a key part of data governance and security. They’ ll also bridge the gap between IT and business, helping increase BI adoption across the board.
It’s all too easy to lose control of business intelligence projects and to become bogged down in data. One way to take back control is to log all the BI users. This will become essential in governing your data but it’s also a useful way to identify gap areas where business intelligence is weak or isn’ t producing the results you want.
A great suggestion is to classify business intelligence users based on how much training they’ ve received or their analytical capabilities. This approach will help take your analytical maturity to the next level.

Serena Williams may be missing from this year’s French Open, but big sister Venus is still going strong and marks her Roland Garros 20th anniversary on Sunday.
Serena Williams may be missing from this year’s French Open, but big sister Venus is still going strong and marks her Roland Garros 20th anniversary on Sunday.
Three weeks shy of her 37th birthday, the American star, who made her debut in the French capital in 1997, kicks off her latest campaign against China’s Wang Qiang.
Williams, seeded 10, has played every year since 1997 with the exception of 2011 and despite her senior citizen status, she is still a contender at the Slams as her run to the Australian Open final in January proved.
Her staggering longevity is illustrated by the fact that her potential second round opponent is compatriot Amanda Anisimova who, at just 15, is the youngest main draw competitor since 2005.
When Venus was losing the 2002 Roland Garros final to Serena, Anisimova was just nine months old.
“I’ m here as I still have a lot to give. That just wraps it up, ” said Venus who has never got beyond the quarter-finals in Paris since her runners-up spot 15 years ago.
Anisimova, the Florida-based daughter of Russian parents, made the tournament courtesy of winning the US wild card play-off.
She faces Japan’s world number 94 Kurumi Nara on Sunday .
“This will be my first main draw match at a major, I’ m very excited and I can’ t wait to play already, ” she said.
Elsewhere on what’s expected to be a sweltering opening day in Paris, world number one Angelique Kerber starts against experienced Russian player Ekaterina Makarova.
Kerber was defeated in the first round by unseeded Kiki Bertens 12 months ago and has yet to get past the quarter-finals.
The German left-hander has endured a miserable clay-court season, losing early in Stuttgart and crashing out in her Rome opener, while retiring from her last-16 clash in Madrid with a lower back injury.
“Everybody knows clay is not my favorite surface, but I try my best, ” said Kerber. “Last year was not the best for me.”
Makarova, also left-handed, is a former top tenner who has made at least the quarter-finals of all the majors, except the French Open.
Action on Philippe Chatrier center court starts with two-time Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova making her comeback after six months away from the sport spent recovering from potentially career-ending injuries sustained in fighting off a knife-wielding burglar in December.
Kvitova, a semi-finalist in 2012 and seeded 15 this year, faces America’s Julia Boserup, the world number 86 who is making her French Open debut.
The standout match in the men’s singles sees Austrian sixth seed Dominic Thiem, a semi-finalist in 2016, take on unpredictable Bernard Tomic of Australia.
Thiem is regarded as a potential champion should world number one Andy Murray, defending champion Novak Djokovic or nine-time champion Rafael Nadal slip up.

Gregg Allman: A Voice of the South Who Mixed a Musical Melting Pot

0

Hear 10 definitive songs by the founding member of the Allman Brothers Band, who died from complications of liver cancer at 69.
All of the mythic South was in Gregg Allman’s music: soul, blues, country, gospel, rock’ n’ roll, jazz. The roadhouse, the back porch, the juke joint, the church, the farm, the highway.
It was in the weary, determined drawl of his voice, rising to a sustained, honeyed ache or rasping with stubborn gumption. It was in the way his keyboard playing took turns steering the Allman Brothers Band and creating its backdrop: the Hammond organ that could be greasy or celestial, the piano that summoned hymns, honky-tonk, boogie-woogie and jazz. (He played serviceable guitar, too.) And it was in the songs Mr. Allman, who died Saturday at 69, wrote, putting terse, bluesy riffs behind lyrics that spoke of endless troubles, domestic and universal, and the will to survive them. “Bearing sorrow, having fun, ” as he put it in “Melissa.”
It all sounded natural and rooted, straight from the Georgia soil, when the Allman Brothers Band unveiled its musical hybrid on its self-titled 1969 debut album. It was music that would become a foundation for both the sturdy structures of southern rock and the far-flung extrapolations of jam bands.
There was radical effort behind the band’s seeming ease. The Allman Brothers Band had thoroughly figured out the segues among all of the styles they merged: where rhythms could coincide and metamorphose, where simple harmonies could support jazzy elaboration, how a soul revue’s horn lines or a country band’s fiddle could be translated onto the band’s guitars and keyboards. Outside the Allman Brothers Band, Mr. Allman led his own jam bands, although at times his studio albums attempted something crisper and more radio-friendly.
The birthright the Allmans’ music claimed was geographical — American and particularly Southern — and with it came a willingness to move past genre lines and all their connotations of race and class. It was all at their fingertips, inviting listeners to follow.
His songs also drew on his own history, particularly in later years when he looked back on his own past excesses and drug problems. His voice was more weathered by then, but it stayed strong all the way into the 2010s, past the Allman Brothers Band’s retirement in 2014. Steeped in the blues, he had always sung like someone experienced beyond his years.
Here are 10 definitive Gregg Allman songs. Unless otherwise noted, they were recorded by the Allman Brothers Band.
“Whipping Post” carried the Allman Brothers to improvisational peaks through decades of concerts. It’s a lover’s lament carried by a whirlwind through blues, jazz and rock. Its riff first appears in a tricky 11/8 meter, then straightens out to 12/8; its chorus heaves into a bluesy half time for a desperate a cappella plaint — “Good Lord, I feel like I’ m dyin’ !” — but then revs up again, lingering over an unchanging harmonic foundation that foments open-ended improvisation. The band could push “Whipping Post” in any direction — and did.
The narrator of “Midnight Rider” is a fugitive in motion: broke and tired, chased by unnamed pursuers. Mr. Allman’s music makes his journey a one-chord meditation interrupted by a few bars of tension when he sings, “I’ m not gonna let ‘em catch me”; the rhythm keeps him moving.
A jazzy waltz with a circular, three-note bass riff and pattering percussion cross-rhythms introduced the Allmans’ most psychedelic side on their 1969 debut album. It’s a declaration of ambition to realize “dreams I’ ll never see”; it also stretched a long way in concert.
Mr. Allman’s rolling piano riff is part gospel, part Mardi Gras mambo, and his lyrics fight their way out of mourning toward gratitude for being alive as Dickey Betts’s slide guitar pushes ahead. The song was on “Eat a Peach, ” the album completed after the death of Duane Allman, Gregg’s brother and the band’s founding guitarist; it insists, “You can’ t let one precious day slip by.”
“Melissa” is a ballad about a constant traveler “knowing many, loving none” while thinking about a woman back home. A hobo? An itinerant musician? The song doesn’ t decide whether to stay footloose or settle down; it lingers between restlessness and longing.
“Never could use just a little/Never could leave it alone, ” Mr. Allman moaned, facing down a lifelong self-destructive streak he had survived. Even in this studio recording, the song’s choppy, minor-key New Orleans groove spurs bluesy guitar solos heading toward Hendrix territory.
A two-fisted piano boogie with a pugnacious slide guitar, “Wasted Words” is a surly lover’s quarrel escalated to theological ground. The singer compares his “baby” to God and Satan, and while he points out, “I ain’ t no saint, ” he’s not confessing to any specific sin.
The form is a by-the-book slow blues, with plenty of room for Mr. Allman to let the vocal drama build, from bemoaning “our bad, bad misfortune” to full-throated shouts and roars at the end. But it’s a crescendo of anger, not sorrow; as he leaves the relationship wreckage behind, he snarls, “Don’ t reach out for me, babe.”
A low, bruising guitar riff and seething organ chords carry a tale of temptation, blind lust and infidelity: “the beginning of the end of my happy home.” Repentance arrives far too late.
Written by the bluesman Sleepy John Estes, “Floating Bridge” is about a brush with death: getting rescued from drowning. It’s from Mr. Allman’s most recent solo album, “Low Country Blues, ” and there’s relief and remembered terror in his voice.

Chinese fighter jets conduct unsafe maneuver near US aircraft

0

Two Chinese J-10 fighter jets conducted unsafe maneuvers while intercepting a US surveillance aircraft that was operating in international airspace near the South China Sea, according to the Navy.
Navy Cmdr. Gary Ross confirmed that the Chinese jet’s actions qualified as “unsafe and unprofessional” but noted that the US continues to review the facts of the incident and will convey its concerns through “appropriate channels” with the Chinese government.
“US forces operate in the Asia-Pacific region on a daily basis, including in the South China Sea, ” Ross said in a statement. “All operations are conducted in accordance with international law and demonstrate that the United States will fly, sail and operate wherever international law allows.”
China called the US description of the incident “inconsistent with the facts.” The Chinese defense ministry said their aircraft’s operations were “professional and safe” and were in accordance with military law and regulations.
The country’s ministry also urged US officials to “take concrete measures to correct its mistakes” and “avoid similar incidents.”
“Recently, the US military has dispatched multiple ships and aircraft to conduct operations in waters and airspace facing China, infringing upon our sovereignty and endangering the lives of front line personnel from both sides, ” the ministry said in a statement.
“The Chinese military will resolutely fulfill its duties to firmly safeguard national sovereignty and security, ” the ministry said.
Wednesday’s encounter comes on the heels of last week’s incident in which two Chinese Su-30 fighter jets intercepted a US Air Force radiation detection plane over the East China Sea, according to the US Pacific Air Forces.
The US crew aboard the US Air Force WC-135 also characterized the move as “unprofessional, ” according to the statement from Air Force Lt. Col. Hodge at the time.
“While we are still investigating the incident, initial reports from the US aircrew characterized the intercept as unprofessional. The issue is being addressed with China through appropriate diplomatic and military channels, ” Hodge said.
One US official initially told CNN the Chinese jets came within 150 feet of the US plane, with one of the Su-30s flying inverted, or upside down, directly above the American plane.
However, Chinese officials disputed that claim, saying the “US version of the event is inaccurate.”
“On May 17, a US surveillance plane was conducting surveillance in China’s Yellow Sea airspace. Chinese military aircraft identified and verified the US plane in accordance with law and regulations. Their operations were professional and safe, ” said China’s Defense Ministry spokesman Senior Col. Wu Qian.
“The frequent close-in surveillance by US military ships and aircraft is the root cause to the issue of China-US military safety at sea and in the air. We hope the US side will stop such surveillance activities to avoid such incidents from happening again, ” he said.
This week’s incident also occurred on the same day that a US Navy destroyer sailed close to a disputed South China Sea island controlled by China for the first time under US President Donald Trump.
The USS Dewey sailed within 12 miles (20 kilometers) of Mischief Reef, in the Spratly Island chain, on Wednesday in a “freedom of navigation operation, ” according to a US official.
China’s Defense Ministry said Thursday two Chinese frigates had “warned and dispelled” the USS Dewey after it had entered their waters “without permission.”
“We are firmly opposed to the US behavior of showing force and boosting regional militarization, and have made solemn representation to the US side, ” Chinese Defense Ministry spokesman Ren Guoqiang said.
While he didn’t confirm details of this particular operation, Pentagon Spokesperson Capt. Jeff Davis told CNN this week, “We operate in the Asia-Pacific region on a daily basis, including in the South China Sea.”
“We operate in accordance with international law. We fly, sail, and operate wherever international law allows, ” he added.

Военно-морской флот США решил направить авианосец Нимиц в западную часть Тихого океана, чтобы увеличить давление на Северную Корею, сообщает японское издание Asahi Shimbun.
