Send dirt to a galaxy far away with these Star Wars vacuum cleaners

0

Samsung’s limited edition Star Wars-themed PowerBot vacuum cleaners take inspiration from the Dark side.
The Empire in Star Wars can be accused of many things, but one of them is not uncleanliness – Darth Vader’s cloak is always pressed to perfection and it’s very much to the credit of the Stormtrooper’s that they’re able to keep those white uniforms so pristine. Did you ever see a speck of dust on the Star Destroyer? We didn’t.
That’s why it makes so much sense, then, that Samsung has announced it’s releasing robot vacuum cleaners inspired by the Dark Side.
There are two models to choose from, one that looks like Darth Vader’s mask and another that resembles a Stormtrooper.
These are essentially just limited edition versions of Samsung’s original PowerBot vacuum so you can expect the same CycloneForce technology. It separates dust from dirt and debris to keep the filter cleaner for longer as well as an extra-wide 290mm brush, and sensor technology which allows the vacuum to map out the space of your home and calculate an efficient cleaning path that avoids obstacles.
There is one key difference that sets these models apart from the standard Samsung PowerBot vacuum, though – they come pre-loaded with Star Wars phrases and music that will play as they clean.
The Darth Vader model will apparently state “you are powerful” when it goes into turbo mode and play the Imperial March when it’s returning to its charging station.
The vacuum can be controlled remotely using a smartphone app but it’s also compatible with Amazon Alexa so you can use voice commands too.
Both models are currently available for pre-order from Samsung’s website for $799 (around £600) and they’re expected to ship from the week beginning November 6. available for pre-order from Samsung’s website
The price did, admittedly, immediately force us to reconsider our plan to buy enough of these to form our own legion. Robot vacuums are usually likely to appear in Black Friday sales, though we imagine these particular models will be hard to come by. Black Friday sales
Availability outside of the US hasn’t been confirmed just yet but we’ll update when more availability information becomes available. More of a Dyson fan? These are the best Dyson vacuum offers you can get right now More of a Dyson fan? These are the best Dyson vacuum offers you can get right now

Las Vegas: Todesschütze Paddock feuerte schon vor Blutbad auf Wachmann

0

Tillis' 'transformed' North Carolina is rosy fantasy

0

Tuesday, Oct. 10,2017 — Sen. Thom Tillis’ “analysis” in the Wall Street Journal was big on sweeping declarations and short on specifics. Who can blame him for painting over the details of reality with the broad brush of generalizations?
CBC Editorial: Tuesday, Oct. 10,2017; Editorial # 8221 The following is the opinion of Capitol Broadcasting Company
Sen. Thom Tillis so desperately wants to make North Carolina a red state he’s taken to wearing rose-tinted glasses.
Tillis, in an op-ed for the Wall Street Journal, discusses tax cuts he helped ram through the General Assembly while he served as House speaker.
Readers perusing the piece could be forgiven if they came away thinking the former state House speaker had paved the streets with gold, made public school teachers’ supply closets overflow with resources, given state workers big raises, ended waiting lines at the DMV, slashed costs for university students and made sure everyone had easy and affordable access to health care.
While Tillis claimed he held off hordes of special interest lobbyists seeking special tax breaks in his so-called tax reforms, the truth is he worked hand-in-hand with the business lobbyists to deliver a huge corporate tax cut that hasn’t stimulated the economy, nor led to further investment.
The Tillis “analysis” was big on sweeping declarations and short on specifics. Who can blame him for looking to paint over the details of reality with the broad brush of generalizations?
Let’s add a few facts to the senator’s grandiose conclusions and provide the kind of reality check that middle class North Carolinians know all too well.
EMPLOYMENT
“More than 350,000 jobs have been created, and the unemployment rate has been cut nearly in half,” says Tillis. Well, how many jobs were lost over that time? How many frustrated workers just gave up and left the workforce?
When comparing North Carolina’s pre-recession employment numbers with the numbers today, there’s a clearer picture: Employment growth hasn’t come close to keeping up with the state’s population growth.
North Carolina’s population has increased 11 percent over the last decade but the size of the prime-age workforce (ages 25-54) increased just 8 percent – suggesting that some people who should be in the workforce have dropped out, including many still in their prime who lost jobs in the recession and eventually gave up trying to find something else. And that’s not to mention the number of people who have been forced to take jobs at lower rates of pay or fewer hours than they desired.
That is slightly better than treading water, in our book.
Of great concern should be the sectors where we’ve lost jobs. Compared to 2007, North Carolina has 53,000 fewer construction jobs (a 21 percent drop) and 70,000 fewer manufacturing jobs (down 13 percent). Much of the growth, meanwhile, has come in sectors characterized by low wages, few benefits and more precarious job security.
HOUSEHOLD INCOME
Since the recession, most North Carolina households have found it tougher to make ends meet. Median household income in North Carolina has been losing ground to inflation over the last decade. The median income of $46,193 a decade ago would be $54,964 today when adjusted for inflation. Given the latest household median income of $50,584, families are bringing in $4,376 less per year. Think of it as an 8 percent pay cut.
The current poverty rate for the state, 16.4 percent, is HIGHER than it was in 2007 – at 14.3 percent. That’s no comeback – it’s heading backwards.
What’s really going on with those Thom Tillis tax cuts?
STATE REVENUES
What Tillis calls tax reform has really been a massive shift in who pays the cost of government and how they do it. In simple terms, the Tillis plan cut taxes on corporations and raised sales and use taxes on everyone else. In the last decade, sales tax collections have increased 40 percent while corporate income taxes have DROPPED 48 percent. The burden of paying the costs of government is being moved onto lower income taxpayers from higher income ones.
Tillis used overly broad strokes to paint his rosy and unrealistic picture of a “transformed” North Carolina. But when you take a closer look at the numbers that show the state’s economic performance, a different picture emerges.
Faith in trickle-down economics has left Tillis all wet and his rank-and-file constituents’ hopes for economic improvement high and dry.
While Tillis and his fellow leaders in the General Assembly have been busy taking care of the state’s comfortable big corporations – show horses – the middle and working class households of the state are left in their dust.

Twitter finally gets around to developing a save-for-later feature

0

Twitter is developing a save-for-later feature so you can save tweets of interest in a private space for later reference.
A feature that many on Twitter have long been asking for looks like it’s finally heading to the microblogging service.
We’re talking about a bookmarking button that lets you save tweets, whether you want to check them out later or simply store them because they resonated or made you laugh.
At the current time, you probably use one of a variety of methods to save a tweet, including DMing it to yourself or tapping the Like button. But these methods aren’t necessarily convenient — or private. Indeed, some on Twitter lament the fact that their Liked tweets — often with links to articles — can now show up in their followers’ timelines, “inadvertently giving big exposure to things I haven’t read yet,” as one user recently put it.
News of the upcoming feature came directly from Twitter product manager Jesar Shah, who revealed on Monday that an early version had been developed at a recent Hack Week. She even posted a video demonstration (below) showing how it might work, though Shah noted that the prototype was “likely” to change prior to release.
In its current form, the feature certainly seems straightforward enough. When you see a tweet you want to save, it’s simply a case of tapping the more-options button that appears to the right of the Like button, and then again on the add-to-bookmarks option. When you want to access your saved tweets, just tap on your profile picture and select bookmarks from the drop-down list.
With Twitter never having gotten around to building a save-for-later feature, many users turned to apps like Pocket that allow you to save links to articles in tweets for offline reading at a later time. But a quick and easy method for saving funny or fascinating content, with or without links, is likely to prove popular with Twitter users who’d prefer to save tweets in a private space, accessible in a couple of taps at any time.
Shah said she wants input from anyone on Twitter interested in helping to develop the feature. “We’ll be tweeting to ask for feedback, and share our thinking as we compare designs, experiment, do research, and more,” she said. But hopefully it won’t be too long before it lands on the service.

Huawei Mate 10 poster reveals a big battery and a massive screen

0

All the key Huawei Mate 10 specs have been listed on what appears to be a promotional poster for the phone.
Despite the Huawei Mate 10 likely launching on October 16 we still haven’t heard that many rumors about it, but a promotional poster that was seemingly spotted in China has filled in some of the gaps. Huawei Mate 10
Spotted by @Daimoi on Weibo (a Chinese microblogging site) the poster claims that the Huawei Mate 10 will have a 4,000mAh battery, which is the same size as the Huawei Mate 9. @Daimoi Huawei Mate 9
It’s also said to have a 6.2-inch 2,160 x 1,080 display. That’s a resolution that we’ve heard before but previous rumors put the screen at 5.9 or 6 inches. rumors
Other specs revealed by the poster include a dual-lens camera on the back, with a 23MP sensor and a 20MP one. That would be a boost – at least in megapixel count – from the 20MP and 12MP pairing on the Huawei Mate 9.
Finally, it mentions Huawei’s new Kirin 970 chipset, which has already been confirmed for the phone, and as with other promotional materials it hints at the Mate 10’s AI skills, saying “smarter is better”, though doesn’t explain what that actually means. confirmed
As always, we’d take this with a pinch of salt, especially as the screen size is at odds with previous rumors, but it’s very possible that these are the Huawei Mate 10’s specs. The Huawei Mate 10 Pro has been caught on camera The Huawei Mate 10 Pro has been caught on camera
