Nagasaki rejoices over native son Ishiguro’s winning of Nobel Prize in literature

The city of Nagasaki, the birthplace of British novelist Kazuo Ishiguro, reveled Thursday in the news that Ishiguro has been awarded the Nobel Prize in lit
NAGASAKI – The city of Nagasaki, the birthplace of British novelist Kazuo Ishiguro, reveled Thursday in the news that Ishiguro has been awarded the Nobel Prize in literature.
The 62-year-old author was born in the city on Nov. 8,1954, and lived there until age 5, when his family moved to Britain.
“I feel like I’m dreaming,” said Teruko Tanaka, 91, who taught Ishiguro at the now-closed Sakuragaoka kindergarten. “I didn’t think he’d win the prize while I’m alive.”
Ishiguro, the winner of the 1989 Man Booker Prize, met with Tanaka at one point when he visited Nagasaki after becoming a writer, and later sent her an autographed copy of one of his books.
“I am so excited, I can’t sleep tonight,” said Tanaka.
Masayuki Itayama, 62, from Minamishimabara in Nagasaki Prefecture, had already started looking for Ishiguro’s books at a bookstore.
“I didn’t know he was a Nagasaki native,” said Itayama, adding he is eager to read the books of an author who is now one of Nagasaki’s most famous sons.
Welcoming the news, Nagasaki Mayor Tomihisa Taue expressed hope in a statement that Ishiguro will have a chance to visit his hometown someday.
“In his debut work, ‘A Pale View of Hills,’ he portrays life in Nagasaki after the atomic bombing. I am proud of the great writer having Nagasaki in the back of his mind and making it a vital part of his work,” he said.
People involved in publishing and the bookstore business in particular rejoiced over the prize.
“Nagasaki is an international town and has established deep-rooted ties with Britain,” said Hitoshi Katayama, the 70-year-old president of a local publisher. “It is great that a person associated with the two countries won the prize.”
Akira Yamaguchi, who has been handling Ishiguro’s books at Hayakawa Publishing Corp., the exclusive publisher of the Japanese translations of his books, felt Ishiguro was a writer worthy of receiving the most recognized prize in literature — and thought it was time he did.
“His books are widely read around the world because there is a fundamental theme lying deep beneath his diverse way of writing,” Yamaguchi said.
He also said Ishiguro is a typical British gentleman who also possesses important Japanese traits, such as thoughtfulness for others.
The Nagasaki marine meteorological observatory, where Ishiguro’s father is believed to have worked, is now the Nagasaki meteorological observatory in the area where the world-heritage Glover Garden is located.

The next Dell XPS 13 gets teased way ahead of CES 2018

Dell gives TechRadar an early glimpse of its next flagship Ultrabook complete with a new color and woven glass fiber palm rest.
Dell gave TechRadar an early preview of the next XPS 13 during a tour of its Round Rock, Texas headquarters.
It’s clear the electronics firm’s latest 13-inch Ultrabook has taken design cues from the Dell XPS 13 2-in-1. Gone are the full-size USB 3.0 ports in exchange for three USB-C ports. Sadly, this has also meant the SD card reader has been switched out for a Micro SD card slot. Dell XPS 13 2-in-1
Dell also introduced the updated Dell XPS 13 with a new Alpine White and Rose Gold color. The palm rest is made of a new woven glass fiber material that feels. Similar to carbon fiber material involves weaving a crystalline medium and a clear resin that give it a soft but firm structure. Dell XPS 13
Dell explained it had to develop the new material because it couldn’t produce an authentically white carbon fiber and it was unsatisfied with just giving it a coat of white paint.
Otherwise, Dell is keeping its lips sealed on more details about the new Dell XPS 13, but you can expect to hear much more about it at CES 2018. Check out our round up of the best Ultrabooks best Ultrabooks

Made by Google and Made for Google: a guide to the tech giant's big new programs

0

Made by/for Google: Here’s every device with Google’s gold stamp of approval.
Google’s big hardware event for the year has finally arrived, and we’ve been treated to a slew of great new products from the company – including the all-new Google Pixel 2 and Google Pixel 2 XL. Those devices, however, weren’t the only new products from Google on display October 4 – in fact, the company introduced a number of devices under the “Made by Google” umbrella.
On top of the new products made by Google, Google also recently unveiled its device partnership program, called “Made for Google,” which promises to showcase a ton of new products built specifically to work with Google devices.
But what exactly define the “Made by Google” and “Made for Google” programs? And what kinds of devices should we expect to see for each? Here’s everything you need to know about the two major arms of Google’s big hardware push.
The Made by Google program is pretty straightforward – it simply includes any devices that are literally made by Google.
In other words, if a device was designed and created by Google and is being sold with Google branding on it, it’s in the Made by Google series of products.
Of course, that doesn’t mean that Google manufactures all the products in the Made by Google program. Instead, it means that the company played a major role in designing and developing the device. So much so, that Google is willing to brand the device with its own seal of approval.
The majority of products in the Made by Google program fall into the major device categories like phones, laptops, smart home devices, and so on. Google largely leaves the accessories to the “Made for Google” program, where it promotes products that can be used in conjunction with its own.
Made for Google basically covers all the Google-related products that Google isn’t building itself. The vast majority of these products will be accessories: cases for your phone, chargers, headphones, and so on.
The main difference here is that the products won’t be branded as Google-built. An Otterbox case for the Google Pixel 2 XL may be “Made for Google,” but you can bet it’ll still say Otterbox on it.
That doesn’t mean that Google isn’t involved in the product at all. In fact, that’s the whole point of the “Made for Google” program – it’s built to allow Google to recommend products for its devices.
What that means is that you know there’s a certain level of quality in the building process. Google is likely taking the certification pretty seriously, and will only allow for a product to fall under the “Made for Google” umbrella if it meets certain standards – so, if you’re looking for a case for your phone, you’re more likely to get a quality one if you buy one that’s Made for Google.
Here’s a list of the products that fall under the “Made by Google” program:
On top of these main products, Google also offers a slew of accessories, like phone cases, bases for the Google Home, and so on. Since these are actually made by Google and not just recommended by Google, they fall under the “Made by Google” category.
Not seeing anything of interest? The Made by Google program will only expand.
Not only is it most likely that Google will launch more phones in the near future, but it’s clear that Google is looking to take on Amazon with the Google Home series. On top of that, considering Google’s recent acquisition of a large portion of HTC’s smartphone business, it’s possible that Google will expand its smartphone lineup to include more phones across different price points.
So where can you get Made by Google products for yourself? Well, the main way is through the Google online store, which you can find here .
There’s only a small list of categories currently part of the “Made for Google” program – but that list is likely to grow in the near future.
Here’s the list so far:
On top of these accessories, Google also sells a number of dongles and adapters for its phones and devices, made by companies like Belkin.
You might notice something about this list – it’s mostly accessories. But that’s kinda the point of the “Made for Google” program: It’s aimed at offering products that work well with products that Google already offers, not at recommending products that might compete with what Google offers.
Both the Made for Google and Made by Google programs are in their infancy. Google is only recently transitioning into a company with a major hardware arm, and we’ll see more and more Google-built products over the next few years.
Of course, we’ll also see more products made for those Google-built products – so expect the Made for Google program to grow a lot in coming years.

Google’s compelling smartphone pitch – Pixel 2 first impressions

On stage at Google’s hardware event in San Francisco on Wednesday, hardware chief Rick Osterloh put the current state of smartphones in 2017 best. “Smartphones
On stage at Google’s hardware event in San Francisco on Wednesday, hardware chief Rick Osterloh put the current state of smartphones in 2017 best. “Smartphones might be reaching parity in terms of specs,” he said, and that line of thinking was apparent when Google didn’t bother to mention the specs of the Pixel 2 or Pixel 2 XL at any point during its reveal.
“Smartphones might be reaching parity in terms of specs,” he said, and that line of thinking was apparent when Google didn’t bother to mention the specs of the Pixel 2 or Pixel 2 XL at any point during its reveal.
With that mentality in mind, how do smartphone manufacturers like Google, Apple, and Samsung differentiate themselves? For Google, it means making the Pixel 2 the singular device that connects the entire Google ecosystem.
Last year Google CEO Sundar Pichai dialed in on the company’s focus on artificial intelligence moving forward, and with Google’s AI now boasting the highest IQ of any AI platform on the planet, the tech giant is ready to truly incorporate its Google Assistant throughout its entire product line. “AI + software + hardware”. That’s the tagline that kept flashing on the screen throughout the event, and Pixel 2 exemplifies it.
The best camera in the business
Like Osterloh said, the premium smartphone market is becoming a flat playing field, and a quick look at the tech specs of the Pixel 2 confirm it. But where Google continues to differentiate itself on the hardware front is the camera. When the Pixel launched last year, it found an audience looking for the best smartphone camera available, and Google has continued to push that selling point with the Pixel 2.
The Pixel 2 has the highest DxO score of any smartphone ever with 98, compared to the Pixel that launched with a score of 90, and the Galaxy Note 8 and iPhone 8 Plus that have launched with scores of 94 respectively. This may not mean much to most users checking out the Pixel 2, but from my brief experience with the device, it is clear that Google continues to have a fantastic camera experience.
Both versions use the same cameras: a 12.2 megapixel rear camera with autofocus, laser and dual pixel phase detection, and f/1.8 aperture; and an 8 megapixel front camera with fixed focus and f/2.4 aperture. Google has added electronic image stabilization for more clarity, optical image stabilization, minor updates like wider aperture, and the rear camera can shoot video in 4K at 30 fps.
However, you’ll notice that there is only one rear camera on both Pixel 2 devices, rather than the dual rear camera approach that seems to be the popular route to take in 2017. Google has instead opted for a dual-pixel camera sensor approach that can impressively do with one camera sensor what many others need two camera sensors to do.
This means that both the rear and front cameras on the Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL can achieve that DSLR-blur effect, which Google is calling ‘Portrait Mode’ on the Pixel 2. Other camera features include ‘Motion Photos’, basically the same as the iPhone’s Live Photos that automatically records video around each picture, and new augmented reality stickers. This AR stickers are based on Google’s ARCore framework and allow you to incorporate stickers in any photo or video. Google used the Stranger Things ‘demogorgon’ for its demo, but has also teamed up with Saturday Night Live, YouTube, the NBA, and Star Wars Ep. 8 for more when it launches later this year.
I expect we’ll see that the Pixel 2 will continue to lead the pack in regards to camera performance. Navigating around the dual rear camera approach certainly gives it an edge, especially when the price is brought into the discussion. With my brief time with the device in a poorly lit event space, it’s clear that users who are accustomed to taking photos at conferences and events where lighting is not optimal will be satisfied.
While the two Pixel 2 devices share most of the same specs, the big differentiator is the display, with the most notable difference being the large bezels incorporated on the regular Pixel 2. Google has taken a similar approach to Apple and the iPhone 8 versus iPhone X by keeping the bezels on the smaller handset.
Ultimately, it will be up to user preference between the two devices. Want the slightly higher resolution OLED screen? Choose the Pixel 2 XL. Indifferent? Then go for the Pixel 2, the AMOLED screen isn’t anything to frown at.
Lastly, it should be mentioned that Google has gone the way of Apple and given credence to the whole ‘the future is headphone jack free’ that Apple tried starting last year. That’s right, both Pixel 2 devices lack a headphone jack, for seemingly no reason at all. To make up for this, Google introduced its own wireless headphones called Pixel Buds. And while the Pixel Buds are sure to attract comparisons to Apple’s AirPods, Google has taken the wireless headphone concept one step further: live translation.
Using Google Translate, Pixel Buds users – the headphones can work with any device – can translate up to 40 languages in real time. This is a huge reason to pick up the Pixel Buds, especially if you’re often traveling on business to destinations where you may not speak the native language. A move like this makes losing the headphone jack sting slightly less.
Google Assistant powers everything
What Google is doing with Google Translate for the Pixel Buds is appropriate when you look at how big of a role Google Assistant plays in the Pixel 2 devices. The Pixel 2 has two new Pixel-only AI-powered features, Google Lens and Now Playing.
Google Lens is the company’s visual search comparable to what Samsung is trying to do with its own smart assistant in Bixby Vision. Basically, Google Lens allows you to take a picture of something, like a book, and you’ll receive info on it, like who the author is and book reviews.
The concept is pretty simple, but where it works compared to Bixby Vision, is that the Pixel can access the entirety that is the Google database. Having the largest search engine on the planet at its fingertips can make Google Lens an exciting feature when users can take a picture of a restaurant and get reviews on the spot.
Now Playing takes advantage of the new always-on screen by automatically detecting what music is playing in the environment, and displaying the name of the song and artist. It’s an opt-in service that pulls from a Google-generated service. Basically, it’s Shazam but it’ll happen automatically. I wasn’t able to test any truly niche artists to see how well this really works, but it is definitely a nice touch, especially for those like me who can never remember the name of a song, let alone who sings it.
Other additions to Google Assistant are smaller updates designed to make the entire process less of a hassle. While being able to squeeze the Pixel 2 in order to launch Google Assistant isn’t the biggest improvement, Google showed off some useful functionality during the reveal event.
For example, Google Assistant can recognize when you are entering your car and placing your phone in your cup holder, so that with just one question it can direct you home, tell you the traffic, start playing the podcast or radio station you were listening to, and list any unread messages you’ve received. You could say that this is one step closer to digital assistants like Google Assistant actually becoming your assistant.
And Google Assistant works seamlessly with the rest of the products in the Google family. With instant tethering, you can use the Pixel’s data connected to access the internet on the Pixelbook, and your Google Home device can send information to your Pixel. Google implemented ‘Fast Pair’ so that its devices can connect to each other over Bluetooth even faster.
With the added functionality of Google Assistant, and how heavily embedded it is in the Pixel 2 devices, this brings up obvious privacy concerns. For Google Assistant to work exactly as designed, you’ll have to give it access to everything you do on your phone. These artificial intelligence systems need data to learn and grow to become useful, and if it’s going to be tailored to you, there is no way around giving it access to all you do.
With Google Assistant, Google is able to build a profile of who you are, and naturally, that will extend to the likes of targeted ads. So while these features may be extremely convenient, this is certainly something to think about before picking up the Pixel 2.
Pure Android Oreo
Just like with the Pixel, the Pixel 2 will be one of the first devices to receive Android updates. The Pixel 2 will be the second phone to launch in Canada with Android 8.0 Oreo installed (the Sony Xperia XZ1 is the first), and again, just like its predecessor, it remains one of the cleanest Android experiences available.
I’ve never been a fan of the baked in third-party apps the likes of Samsung, LG, and others like to include, forcing me to go through the paces to remove each of those shortcuts, and replace them with the Google apps I use regularly. I appreciate that I don’t have to bother with that on the Pixel devices.
The Pixel 2 has moved its all-purpose Google search bar that can search locally and on the internet to the bottom of the screen. Replacing it is something called ‘At a Glance’, which displays relevant info about your day like meetings, flight status, or traffic.
Pixel 2 users also get unlimited Google Drive storage for storing pictures. No additional costs whatsoever.
The Pixel 2 devices support Google’s ARCore for the AR/VR content that will inevitably come with that. It’s also compatible with the Google Daydream.
Google’s successful followup
At first glance, Google has set itself up to have another winner with the Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL. It once again has a winning camera that photographers are sure to enjoy, and it truly feels like the first smartphone to champion what AI can do. AI + software + hardware indeed.
The Pixel 2 is scheduled to ship on Oct. 17 at $899 for the 64 GB model and $1,029 for the 128 GB. Meanwhile, the Pixel 2 XL is scheduled to ship in late November at $1,159 and $1,289 for the 64 GB and 128 GB models respectively.

Tahir Whitehead is playing like one of the NFL's top linebackers

0

The Detroit Lions linebacker has a team-high 25 tackles through four games. He’s one of just three players across the league who has scooped up two fumbles, plus he’s intercepted a pass.
ALLEN PARK — Tahir Whitehead wasn’t good last year. According to the advanced metrics, he was kind of bad, especially against the pass.
A year later, he’s killing it.
The Detroit Lions linebacker has a team-high 25 tackles through four games. He’s one of just three players across the league who has scooped up two fumbles, plus he’s intercepted a pass. And now those same advanced metrics that hated his game last year, are falling in love with him this year.
ProFootballFocus ranks Whitehead sixth among all linebackers, trailing just Bobby Wagner, Luke Kuechly, Lavonte David, Myles Jack and Ryan Shazier.
“He’s playing probably more confident than ever,” defensive coordinator Teryl Austin said before practice Thursday. “I guess that comes with being in the same system for a while. You kind of know the ins and outs. He kind of knows me, knows what I’m going to call maybe at certain times. So, I think that’s been good for him, and he’s played really well. I’m really happy for him.”
Whitehead is in his sixth season with the club, though his progression has hardly been linear. He began his career as a special teams star, eventually worked his way into the defensive rotation at strong-side linebacker, then played well while filling in for injured starters like DeAndre Levy on the weak side and Stephen Tulloch in the middle.
Last year, the club elected to move on from Tulloch and install Whitehead as the permanent man in the middle. And that’s when he started to struggle.
Whitehead allowed a completion once every three coverage snaps, which was worst in the league. Quarterbacks piled up a rating of 124.9 when targeting him, also worst in the league among qualifying players.
He racked up a career-high 132 tackles, but also didn’t pick off a pass or force a fumble.
But all that’s changed now that he’s back home on the weak side.
Whitehead picked off Eli Manning in Week 2, after not picking off anyone last year. Then he recovered two fumbles Sunday against Minnesota, one of which led to the go-ahead touchdown, and the other of which clinched the 14-7 win in the closing seconds.
“It’s a party at the ball,” Whitehead said.
That’s been true for this Lions defense as a whole, and Whitehead joins Glover Quin as the guys who have made it happen more than anybody. He’s flying around in coverage, making tackles in the box and always seems to be around the ball.
So far, he’s put 2016 behind him by turning in one of the best months of his career.
How’s that for handling adversity?
“I think I’ve played solid football — good football — and I prepare that way,” Whitehead said. “I prepare that way. I prepare to go out there and play good football to help my team win games. At the end of the day, I was always taught, you know, do your 1/11. Do your job, and count on the other 10 guys doing their job, and you’re going to play some good football. And as long as you’re doing that, you’re going to do all right.”
While Whitehead’s move back to the weak side has clearly helped him — he ranks sixth among 4-3 outside linebackers against the run, per PFF — coaches preferred to focus on his overall experience for sparking his play.
“He’s lined up at every position for us through the years, and he’s certainly been very, very productive in those years,” coach Jim Caldwell said. “I think it goes along with the willingness to do it. There’s no inhibitions there. He’s a great team guy, he wants to do what’s best for us, but every year he’s around the ball.
“Actually, when I first, just to kind of give you an example, one of the first things I did — I know I probably mentioned this story a long time ago, but it’s worth repeating — I usually just turn on the special teams film and kind of watch and just kind of see who shows up. And Tahir was one of those guys on that special teams film that showed up time, after time, after time. So, you usually tell there’s an eagerness to get involved, to mix it up, hustle and desire to get to the football. He’s been certainly exemplary of that before I came here, and certainly after as well.”
Whitehead’s turnaround has come at an ideal time, considering first-round pick Jarrad Davis has missed two games in the middle and Paul Worrilow is out multiple weeks on the strong side. Neither of those guys played against Minnesota, which entered that game with a top-five offense.
Last year, that would have been catastrophic. This year, they nearly pitched a shutout. And Whitehead’s elevated play certainly contributed to that.
“I keep hustlin’,” Whitehead said. Indeed.

Russia stole classified NSA cybersecurity data through Kaspersky software installed on home PC

Only a day after it was revealed that Russia likely hacked the mobile phones NATO troops serving in Eastern Europe, there are new details emerging about a cyber attack much closer to home. Hackers working on behalf of the Russian government stole secret details of the NSA’s offensive and defensive cyber capabilities. The information was obtained after an NSA contractor breached protocol and placed the highly classified material on his home computer. The hackers then exploited the Kaspersky antivirus software running on that home computer to exfiltrate the files.
The incident occurred in 2015, was discovered in the spring of last year, and has now become public. With this new knowledge, the Russian government has the ability to better protect their networks from US hacks and more easily infiltrate the networks of other nations.
The NSA, as has always been their policy, neither confirmed or denied that the hack took place. Kaspersky Labs, the Russian makers of the antivirus software, said that they have “not been provided any information or evidence substantiating this alleged incident.”
Although the many agencies in the US government are switching away from Kaspersky software, this is the first known incident of the software being exploited to allow cyber espionage against the US. Kaspersky operates in a more aggressive way than other antivirus systems by copying large amounts of your personal files to allow them to be scanned for possible malware. This is hidden deep in the license agreement that most people skip over and essentially gives up your right to privacy when you install it.
The identity of the contractor at the center of this is not known publicly, but sources close to the issue have told the Wall Street Journal that members of Congress were informed and the incident was given a code name. It is believed that he took the files home to conduct extra work beyond normal business hours and never worked for a foreign government. Although his intentions appear to be have been good, he was still aware that it was a violation of protocol.

San Juan – On September 20, powerful Category 4 Hurricane Maria made a direct landfall on the U. S. island territory of Puerto Rico. Two weeks later, 90 percent of the island is without power and few have clean drinking water. But the world is responding with help. Professor Hernandez knows first hand the difficulties being experienced on the island, and along with Gulf Coast students, teachers, faculty, the GCSC Enactus Team, Ripples of Change and the nonprofit High Hopes, are working to bring energy and aid to the victims of Hurricane Maria. A group of college faculty and students are partnering with the non-profit High Hopes to build solar power harvesters. With just a few items these solar harvesters can be built quickly and at less expense than other pre-built systems. Development of a prototype solar power harvester The college has designed a prototype for a The harvester uses a solar panel, a controller, and a power inverter. “A controller keeps the batteries from overcharging and limits the output of the battery pack when the battery pack begins to run low,” Hoots told The solar harvester needs to be able to run medical equipment, like breathing machines or CPAP machines. “We need enough storage value in it to do that. The other will be a more residential model designed to run a fan and a small refrigerator,” Hoots added. The items being used for the solar harvester are easy to find and set up. What a great idea! “One of the biggest problems you’ll find in children is asthma. We got some calls with people that pretty much they’re using their insulin with no refrigeration,” Professor Hernandez said. “That’s the kind of need we want to solve. We don’t want to provide luxury we just want to provide the basic needs they need from a power perspective.” The college is well on its way to realizing the goals they have set forth. They plan on having 100 solar generators ready by October 15. Flower-grower in Puerto Rico has power Flower-grower Hector Santiago is already back in business because of solar panels powering his 40-acre (16.2-hectare) nursery in central Puerto Rico. Santiago’s decorative plants and poinsettia nursery in the Barranquitas farming area was damaged by Hurricane Maria, but because of his $300,000 investment in 244-solar panels six years ago, he and his 19 employees are back to work. “Everybody told me I was crazy because it was so expensive. Now I have power and they don‘t,” Politicians and average citizens have taken notice of Santiago’s success with solar power, and he hopes more people will see its advantages over the inadequate and antiquated system now being used on the island. Henry Pichardo has a solar installation business in the city of Bayamon. He has already been inundated with inquiries and thinks he will see his business increase by 20 percent this year. “People are going to become more conscious of how they are living, and invest more in solar,” he said. When Hurricane Hugo hit Puerto Rico in September 1989, Emmanuel Hernandez was only a child. “It took us about two months to get power and 8 months to get water,” said Hernandez, now a DBA Assistant Entrepreneurship professor at Gulf Coast State College in Panama City, Florida. The college has designed a prototype for a solar power harvester, which will be used to harness power. One harvester can provide about 1.2-kilowatt hours of power under normal conditions. “The design is modular, so we can grow the design to match the use,” volunteer Tom Hoots said. “The idea is to design them for the best they can be for Puerto Rico.”The harvester uses a solar panel, a controller, and a power inverter. “A controller keeps the batteries from overcharging and limits the output of the battery pack when the battery pack begins to run low,” Hoots told WJHG.com. “The power inverter, like what you’d get at an RV store, that’s converting the DC power from the batteries into AC that’s usable by standard household equipment.”The solar harvester needs to be able to run medical equipment, like breathing machines or CPAP machines. “We need enough storage value in it to do that. The other will be a more residential model designed to run a fan and a small refrigerator,” Hoots added.”One of the biggest problems you’ll find in children is asthma. We got some calls with people that pretty much they’re using their insulin with no refrigeration,” Professor Hernandez said. “That’s the kind of need we want to solve. We don’t want to provide luxury we just want to provide the basic needs they need from a power perspective.”The college is well on its way to realizing the goals they have set forth.
