Fake news of Vegas attack spread on Google, Facebook – Silicon Valley

False news spread on Google and Facebook before the social media platforms removed the posts in question, the companies acknowledged Monday.

MENLO PARK — False news that erroneously named a suspect in the deadly Las Vegas mass shooting on Sunday spread on Google and Facebook before the services removed the posts in question, the two companies acknowledged Monday.
Erroneous posts on both services — one highlighted by Google’s “Top Stories” search results, the other circulated by Facebook users — falsely identified the shooter as an apparently uninvolved person.
Las Vegas police say Stephen Craig Paddock, of Mesquite, Nevada, fired down on concertgoers from the 32nd floor of the Mandalay Bay casino hotel, killing at least 59 people and wounding more than 500 in the deadliest mass shooting in modern U. S. history. Paddock killed himself as authorities closed in.
But a story by the pro-Trump political website “The Gateway Pundit” named a different person as the shooter, citing a Facebook page to claim the individual was “a far left loon” and “a Democrat who liked (MSNBC host) Rachel Maddow.” Posters on the anonymous, anarchic 4chan.org forum likewise trumpeted supposed findings that the same individual was both the shooter and a “social democrat.” BuzzFeed saved screenshots of the stories, which no longer turn up on either Gateway Pundit or 4chan.
Google said in a statement that it highlighted 4chan’s “Politically Incorrect” message board, where the incorrect posts appeared, for several hours before its search algorithm replaced it with more relevant results. The 4chan result only appeared if users entered the erroneous name as a query, Google said. The listing did not appear in Google News.
“This should not have appeared for any queries,” a Google spokesperson said, adding that the company would aim to prevent it from happening again.
Facebook said its security team removed Gateway Pundit results and other similar posts from its social network, some within minutes. But because that removal was “delayed,” the company said, images of the incorrect story were captured and circulated online.
“We are working to fix the issue that allowed this to happen in the first place and deeply regret the confusion this caused,” a Facebook spokesman said in a statement.
Both companies are under fire from lawmakers for promoting false stories in the lead-up to last year’s election, and have been invited to testify at a congressional investigation into Russian meddling in the race.

WATCH:
The Daily Caller News Foundation exposed an extremely insensitive hot take from a CBS legal executive that eventually led to her firing. This incident made the list of the five stupidest media hot takes of the day, of course.
Also included in the top five were takes that framed the horrible shooting at The Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas as political and divisive. Radio show host Alex Jones makes his second all-time appearance, and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton crawls out of the woodwork to say something completely out of line and contradictory.
You won’t believe some of the scenes on today’s show, not to mention blistering and biting commentary.
Who will take the top spot for the most inane comment? Will it be MSNBC, CNN or a completely new face? Watch the video to find out!

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Jury selection has begun in the trial of the man accused of fatally shooting a 32-year-old woman on a San Francisco pier, which touched off a national immigration debate.
Jose Ines Garcia Zarate says he accidentally fired the shot that killed Kate Steinle. The 54-year-old Garcia Zarate had been deported five times prior to the shooting.
Court records show that lawyers began summoning the first of 1,000 potential jurors Monday to the San Francisco courthouse to fill out questionnaires. Possible jurors are being asked if they can sit through a lengthy trial or have moral qualms about the case.
The questionnaire process is expected to take two weeks. Lawyers will then spend about two weeks questioning potential jurors in court about their views on immigration and other issues in an effort to seat an impartial jury.

U. S. Supreme Court rejects New Zealand-based internet mogul's appeal

0

The U. S. Supreme Court on Monday rejected New Zealand-based internet mogul Kim Dotcom’s challenge to the U. S. government’s bid to seize assets held by him and others involved in the now-defunct streaming website Megaupload.
WASHINGTON (Reuters) – The U. S. Supreme Court on Monday rejected New Zealand-based internet mogul Kim Dotcom’s challenge to the U. S. government’s bid to seize assets held by him and others involved in the now-defunct streaming website Megaupload.
The justices left in place a lower court ruling that the U. S. government could seize up to $40 million in assets held outside the United States as part of a civil forfeiture action being pursued in parallel with criminal charges for alleged copyright violations and money laundering.
Dotcom and several other defendants have contested U. S. attempts to extradite them from New Zealand.
German-born entrepreneur Dotcom is wanted by U. S. law enforcement authorities on copyright and money-laundering allegations related to Megaupload, which was shut down in 2012 following an FBI-ordered raid on his Auckland mansion. He was indicted the same year along with fellow Megaupload executives.
“It’s no surprise because the chance to be heard by the U. S. Supreme Court is very slim in general,” Dotcom said in an email to Reuters.
The seizure is also being challenged in courts in Hong Kong and New Zealand, whose authorities have restrained Dotcom’s assets at the U. S. government’s request.
Dotcom’s lawyer Ira Rothken said that his team was “cautiously optimistic” about those court proceedings.
“Kim Dotcom has never been to the United States, is presumed innocent, and is lawfully opposing extradition…yet the DOJ (Department of Justice) by merely labeling him as a fugitive gets a judgment to take all of his assets with no due process,” Rothken said in an email.
U. S. authorities say Dotcom and his colleagues cost film studios and record companies more than $500 million and generated more than $175 million in profits by encouraging paying users to store and share copyrighted material including movies and TV shows.
The U. S. government sought up to $175 million in assets but the defendants say the assets in question are worth only around $40 million. The assets include two houses, luxury cars and bank accounts.
A New Zealand court ruled in February that Dotcom and three other New Zealand-based defendants – Finn Batato, Mathias Ortmann and Bram van der Kolk – could be extradited to the United States to face the charges. Two other indicted Megaupload associates, Sven Echternach and Julius Bencko, who live in Germany and Slovakia respectively, have not been arrested, according to court filings.
The defendants contested the U. S. government’s forfeiture claims, saying in part that it could not seize property under the jurisdiction of a foreign court. The U. S. government’s legal argument, adopted by the appeals court, is that the defendants are fugitives seeking to avoid criminal prosecution in the United States and therefore are not allowed to contest the forfeiture.
The Richmond, Virginia-based 4th U. S. Circuit Court of Appeals ruled against Dotcom in August 2016, and he asked the Supreme Court to hear his appeal.

Many Puerto Ricans angry over Trump’s comments about their hurricane-ravaged island – Twin Cities

0

Outside of official events, many Puerto Ricans say they won’t welcome President Trump with open arms during his visit to the storm-wracked island Tuesday.
SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico — Outside of official events, many Puerto Ricans say they won’t be welcoming President Donald Trump with open arms during his visit to the storm-wracked island on Tuesday.
People in the U. S. territory were angry or dismissive Monday when asked about Trump’s description of some Puerto Ricans who have criticized the U. S. government’s aid after Hurricane Maria as “ingrates” and about his assurances that the relief effort is going well.
“He’s a piece of trash,” Rachel Cruz, a linguist, said as she head home after buying groceries in the capital, San Juan. “He makes a fool out of himself and a fool out of his country.”
Cruz said Puerto Ricans are furious with power still cut off on most of the island, schools and many businesses closed, and much of the countryside struggling to find fresh water and food, but she said even the angriest were unlikely to openly insult the man ultimately responsible for helping them.
“The majority of people here feel that way, but we have to be more balanced because we need help,” she said.
Even those happy with the federal aid effort for the U. S. territory’s 3.4 million people said they resented Trump’s tweets about some Puerto Ricans being lazy and ungrateful.
“We appreciate all the help that we’ve received, but his comments are not true,” said Nancy Rivera, a private school principal who was out buying bread. “We don’t deserve that.”
Rivera and her husband live in the north coastal town of Toa Baja, which was one of the hardest hit by Maria and where dozens of people had to be rescued from rooftops amid widespread flooding. The couple has moved temporarily to their son’s apartment in San Juan.
Gov. Ricardo Rossello, however, praised federal and state officials for the resources and help they have provided, but he also noted that Puerto Rico has long been struggling because of its territorial status.
“I invite all of you to consider, to think of Puerto Ricans as your constituents,” said Rossello, who supports statehood for the island. “Think about it as a moral imperative because we are U. S. citizens but more importantly, we’re all equal as human beings.”
The governor said water service has been restored to about 50 percent of customers across Puerto Rico. Rossello said he hopes 25 percent of electricity customers will have power by the end of October. Officials have said power would be restored to the entire island before March.
Rossello also announced that the wait time to buy gasoline had diminished from seven hours to one hour around San Juan in recent days and that nearly 40 percent of cellphone clients have service.
Many Puerto Ricans, including Noelys Martinez, a call center worker, expressed doubt that Trump’s visit would change anything.
“The lights are not going to come back on because of him,” she said as she strolled near a park eating ice cream.
Angel Tomas Crispin, manager of a convenience store that was doing brisk business as people sought to restock basic supplies, didn’t have kind words for the president. “Donald Trump is not the solution for Puerto Rico,” he said.
Crispin said he was angered by Trump’s comments about the island. “All this money he has, and all the education he has, and he’s ignorant.”
Luis Torres, a retiree taking an evening walk with his wife, Marina, said Trump isn’t welcome.
“As far as I’m concerned, he shouldn’t come,” Torres said.
His wife nodded aggressively.
“He has expressed himself in such a disrespectful way. Extremely unnecessary and extremely insensitive,” she said. “It’s very sad.”

The Equifax hack may be worse than previously thought.
The national credit bureau revealed Monday that another 2.5 million people are believed to have gotten their personal information swiped during the cyber attack — bringing the total up to 145.5 million.
“I was advised Sunday that the analysis of the number of consumers potentially impacted by the cybersecurity incident has been completed, and I directed that the results be promptly released,” newly appointed interim CEO, Paulino do Rego Barros, Jr. said in a statement.
“Our priorities are transparency and improving support for consumers,” he added. “I will continue to monitor our progress on a daily basis.”
According to Equifax, the additional US customers that may have been affected were not victims of a new attack. They just weren’t accounted for when officials initially tallied the numbers.
“I want to apologize again to all impacted consumers,” Barros said. “As this important phase of our work is now completed, we continue to take numerous steps to review and enhance our cybersecurity practices. We also continue to work closely with our internal team and outside advisors to implement and accelerate long-term security improvements.”
Equifax ultimately determined that there were more victims during a review of the data breach, which was first disclosed on Sept. 7 — more than five months after the hackers reportedly infiltrated the company’s servers.
The investigation was conducted by the forensic security firm Madiant.
“The completed review determined that approximately 2.5 million additional U. S. consumers were potentially impacted, for a total of 145.5 million,” Equifax said Monday. “Mandiant did not identify any evidence of additional or new attacker activity or any access to new databases or tables. Instead, this additional population of consumers was confirmed during Mandiant’s completion of the remaining investigative tasks and quality assurance procedures built into the investigative process.”
Equifax’s former CEO Richard Smith is scheduled to address a House subcommittee on Tuesday to discuss the data breach after being forced into retirement last week as a result.
Speaking Monday in a prepared statement, Smith said the hackers were able to access the company’s servers thanks to a flaw in its network, which the security department failed to fix — despite warnings from the US Computer Emergency Readiness Team.
“We now know that the vulnerable version of Apache Struts within Equifax was not identified or patched in response to the internal March 9 notification to information technology personnel,” Smith said. “I am deeply sorry that this occurred.”
Equifax plans to update the feature on its website — allowing US consumers to check if their information was stolen — to reflect the newly-listed consumers. The company said the site should be updated by Oct. 8.
