Despite the shrinking supply of available homes on the market, Bay Area housing sales rose in August. In fact, it was the busiest August in four years, as prices climbed on a year-over-year basis — by nearly 12 percent.
The median price of a home in the nine-county region was $742,000, according to the CoreLogic real estate information service.

Housing affordability is a growing statewide crisis — and Bay Area prices are soaring again
Housing woes spur Bay Area residents to ponder exodus from costly region, poll says According to CoreLogic’s latest report, the Bay Area eeked out a 1.7 percent year-over-year increase in sales as buyers shifted toward mid-to-high-cost deals. An 11 percent gain in deals for homes costing more than $500,000 “compensated for a 20 percent drop in sales below $500,000,” said Andrew LePage, research analyst for CoreLogic.
Looked at from a month-to-month perspective, sales increased more dramatically — by 11.7 percent over July.
Once again, the tight housing supply was key to the market’s behavior. With buyers hellbent on securing properties, they burned through the existing inventory and drove up prices yet again.
“Inventory remained tight, but San Francisco Bay Area home sales reached a four-year high for the month of August, rising about 2 percent year-over-year,” LePage said. The Bay Area’s 11.6 percent year-over-year gain in its median sale price in August 2017 ” was the highest for any month in more than a year and a half — since it rose 14.4 percent in January 2016.”
Here are a few more highlights of the report, which covers single family homes, condominiums and townhouses.
In Santa Clara County, year-over-year sales rose 9.6 percent and the median price rose 13.3 percent to $935,000, again on a year-over-year basis. In San Mateo County, sales rose 0.3 percent and the median price rose 11.3 percent to $1,134,750.
In the East Bay, sales dipped slightly in Contra Costa County — 0.9 percent on a year-over-year basis — as the median price rose 12.4 percent to $572,000. In Alameda County, sales were up 3.3 percent and the median jumped 11.7 percent to $752,000.
And here’s the year-over-year breakdown for single family homes:
In Santa Clara County, sales rose 15.8 percent and the median climbed 14.6 percent to $1,054,500. In San Mateo County, sales dipped 4.9 percent while the median increased 7.6 percent to $1,264,000.
These are the numbers for Contra Costa County: sales up 3.9 percent; median price up 13.7 percent to $580,000. In Alameda County, sales slipped 0.1 percent, while prices rose 12.5 percent to $810,000.
For the Bay Area as a whole, single-family home sales increased 4.4 percent in August and the median price jumped 12.3 percent to $775,000.

Investigators reviewing HHS chief's private charter flights

Federal investigators say they are reviewing Health and Human Services Secretary Tom Price’s recent use of costly charter flights on official business to see if it complied with government travel regulations.
Federal investigators say they’re reviewing Health and Human Services Secretary Tom Price’s recent use of costly charter flights for official business to see if it complied with government regulations.
The inspector general’s office for the department confirmed the review on Friday.
A spokeswoman says the agency began looking into the matter immediately after reports that Price took five trips on private charters when other, cheaper travel options were available. Lawmakers also asked the inspector general to investigate the travel at taxpayers’ expense.
Price’s office said earlier this week he tries to fly commercial whenever possible but that it isn’t always feasible. Price is the former House Budget Committee chairman.
Government regulations generally require officials to minimize travel costs.
Politico first reported Price’s use of charters.

Trump administration drops Obama-era guidance on college sex crimes

0

U. S. Education Secretary Betsy DeVos said on Friday her department was issuing new interim guidelines to colleges on how to handle sexual assault allegations, rescinding Obama administration rules that it said treated the accused unfairly.
(Reuters) – U. S. Education Secretary Betsy DeVos said on Friday her department was issuing new interim guidelines to colleges on how to handle sexual assault allegations, rescinding Obama administration rules that it said treated the accused unfairly.
Earlier in September, DeVos, a controversial advocate of school choice appointed by President Donald Trump, had called for an overhaul of the guidelines implemented under former President Barack Obama.
She said too many students had been falsely charged with sexual assault and schools were terrified about being accused of ignoring accusations.
“This interim guidance will help schools as they work to combat sexual misconduct and will treat all students fairly,” DeVos said in a statement on Friday.
“Schools must continue to confront these horrific crimes and behaviors head-on,” DeVos said. “But the process also must be fair and impartial, giving everyone more confidence in its outcomes.”
The interim guidelines offer several steps colleges can take to address sexual assault complaints pending the outcome of an investigation.
Those include counseling, changing schedules, escorting students, restricting contact between the parties, housing changes, leaves of absence and more security and monitoring of certain areas of campuses.
The Obama guidelines, issued in 2011 and 2014, required colleges to investigate complaints even if there was a separate criminal probe. Unlike in criminal cases, where guilt must be proved beyond a reasonable doubt, universities may judge students based on a preponderance of evidence.
That guidance “may have been well-intentioned,” the department said, but it led to “the deprivation of rights for many students.” These included accused students denied fair process and victims denied an adequate resolution of their complaints, it said.
In developing a new set of school guidelines, the department said it would follow a standard rulemaking process, including soliciting public comments.
Earlier this month, the department said 360 sexual violence cases were under investigation at 250 colleges and universities.

Apple TV 4K can’t actually download 4K video from iTunes

Apple’s 4K TV has launched to a wealth of positive reviews, but it turns out the 4K experience comes with some odd fine print. For example: You can’t actually download 4K movies from iTunes, only stream them. iTunes
MacRumors spotted the quirk in an Apple Support document. Customers can download HD movies – and even some HDR movies in HD resolutions – but 4K is only available in streaming. MacRumors
That’s a pain if you ever want to watch a movie without an internet connection – say, if your network goes down. More likely, it will frustrate people (like yours truly) who prefer to download movies when possible in order to avoid wonky streaming performance.
I mean, streaming works most of the time, but the last thing you want is for your video to buffer during an intense scene because your roommate decided it was a great time to install a year’s-worth of updates.
Other users might simply not have a fast enough internet connection – whether because they have a poor wireless setup or a sucky ISP – to stream 4K all the time. Apple’s 4K movie pricing is great, but the download limitation is a shame for people who are trying to maximize their video experience. 4K movie pricing is great
It’s not clear why Apple is blocking the download of 4K video. As MacRumors points out, it could be a licensing issue, because movie studios wanted Apple to charge more for 4K content.
But more likely, Apple shot itself in the foot with storage. The Apple TV only comes in 32 GB and 64GB configurations, and the vast majority of people will choose the former. 4K video eats up a ton of storage. File sizes depend on the compression technology, but Netflix, for instance, uses about 14 GB for a 2 hour movie. Apple TV 14 GB for a 2 hour movie
While most other streaming boxes in its price range include a USB port or even an SD card port to expand storage, you’re stuck with what you’ve got on the Apple TV.
In a unrelated quirk, you can’t even stream 4K videos from YouTube – likely the biggest source for 4K video right now – because Apple decided not to support Google’s VP9 video codec. Either Apple will have to add it to the Apple TV in a future update, or YouTube will have to implement a different codec just to appease Apple. It might be some time before either company budges. YouTube
The Apple TV 4K sounds like a great streaming box, just make sure you’re aware of the caveats before you splurge on one.

How The Guys Reinvented Their Looks Since The Band Went On Hiatus – Hollywood Life

0

Take a look at how the 1D guys have changed since the band went on hiatus.
It seems like just yesterday that One Direction won The X Factor, doesn’t it? In reality, it’s been six incredible years, in which 1D stormed into the music scene and dominated pop music. From their first album, Up All Night, to their last before calling a hiatus in August 2015, Made in the AM, the guys have never disappointed. Now that every single One Directioner has gone solo, they’ve also modernized their individual style. No longer constrained to catering to teenage girls and creating some sort of cohesiveness with each others’ outfits on tour, their style has really matured! Louis Tomlinson, Zayn Malik, Harry Styles, Liam Payne, and Niall Horan ‘s styles have evolved since going on hiatus!
Above all else, the guys have improved their hair immensely. All five used to rock those Beatles bowl cuts and the shaggy ‘dos every bro you knew in high school liked. Those days are behind them, thankfully. Harry cut off his Mick Jagger locks and has a cool, shorter style to match his mod clothing. We’re obsessed with Harry’s wardrobe on tour. He wears suits in interesting colors and patterns, like hot pink, and floral. It’s so effortlessly cool.
Louis and Liam are dads now (weird, right?), and their styles have matured to reflect that. Gone are the chunky sweaters and ill-fitting cargo pants. In are leather jackets, awesome tees, and hair that doesn’t have platinum highlights. Thank god! Click through our gallery above to see how all the 1D guys’ styles have changed over the years!
HollywoodLifers, do you like the 1D guys’ styles better now, or when they were in the band? Let us know!!
