Access restored to displaced residents of Upper Florida Keys

MIAMI — Residents were allowed to return Tuesday to some islands in the hurricane-hit Florida Keys as officials pieced together the scope of Irma’s destruction and aid rushed into the drenched and debris-strewn state.
It has been difficult to get detailed information on the condition of island chain where Irma first came ashore over the weekend because communication and access were cut off by the storm’s arrival as a Category 4 hurricane. But displaced residents and business owners from Key Largo, Tavernier and Islamorada near the mainland were allowed to return for their first glimpse of the damage Tuesday morning.
People from the Lower Keys faced a longer wait with a roadblock in place where the highway to farther-away islands was washed out by the storm. Road repairs were promised in the coming days.
After flying over the Keys Monday, Florida Gov. Rick Scott described overturned mobile homes, washed-ashore boats and rampant flood damage.
“It’s devastating, ” he said.
A Navy aircraft carrier was due to anchor off Key West to help in search-and-rescue efforts. Drinking water supplies in the Keys were cut off, fuel was running low and all three hospitals in the island chain were shuttered.
Elsewhere, areas such as Tampa Bay had braced for the worst but emerged with what appeared to be only modest damage.
Early Tuesday, the remnants of Irma were blowing through Alabama and Mississippi after drenching Georgia.
Key West resident Laura Keeney was waiting in a Miami hotel until it was safe to return home, and she was anxious to hear more about her apartment complex. Her building manager told her there was flooding there, but further updates were hard to come by because power and cell phone service have been down on the island.
“They told me there is definitely water in the downstairs apartment, which is me, ” said Keeney, who works as a concierge at the Hyatt hotel in Key West.
A stunning 13 million Florida residents were without electricity — two-thirds of the state’s residents — as sweltering tropical heat returned across the peninsula following the storm. In a parting blow to the state, the storm caused record flooding in the Jacksonville area that forced dozens of rescues on Monday. It also caused flooding and outages in Georgia and South Carolina as it moved inland.
School was canceled in communities around Georgia, and more than 1.2 million customers there were without power Tuesday morning.
Six deaths in Florida have been blamed on Irma, along with three in Georgia and one in South Carolina. At least 35 people were killed in the Caribbean.
More than 180,000 people huddled in shelters in Florida, and officials warned it could take weeks for electricity to be restored to everyone.
During its march up Florida’s west coast, Irma swamped homes, uprooted trees and flooded streets.
Around the Tampa-St. Petersburg area, where Irma rolled through early Monday, damage appeared modest. And the governor said effects on the southwest coast, including in Naples and Fort Myers, was not as bad as feared.
Still, Scott predicted that recovery could take a long time in many areas.
“I know for our entire state, especially the Keys, it’s going to be a long road, ” he said.
He said the Navy dispatched the USS Iwo Jima, USS New York and the aircraft carrier Abraham Lincoln to help with relief efforts.
The Keys are linked by 42 bridges that have to be checked for safety before motorists can be allowed in, officials said. County officials placed a roadblock around Mile Marker 74 just before Sea Oates Beach, but said crews were working to restore U. S. 1 as quickly as possible.
In the Jacksonville area, close to the Georgia line, storm surge brought some of the worst flooding ever seen there, with at least 46 people pulled from swamped homes. The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office warned residents along the St. Johns River to evacuate Monday as floodwaters rose.
Paul Johnson and Shonda Brecheen spent Sunday night in a house they’ re remodeling in the San Marco neighborhood of Jacksonville after working late on a remodeling project. Jonhson woke up Monday morning, looked out the window and saw boats passing by where cars used to drive in the neighborhood near the river.
They managed to push his truck through standing water to a nearby parking lot to dry out, but he’s worried about damage to the swamped vehicle.
“I’ m 32, I’ ve lived here most of my life, and I’ ve never seen anything like that, ” he said.

The NES Classic and SNES Classic will be back in 2018 according to Nintendo

Nintendo has announced the return of the NES Classic and continued production of the SNES Classic through 2018. Also, the arrival of the Famicom Mini and continued production of the Famicom in 2018.
Nintendo fans can’t seem to get a break from the emotional rollercoaster following the announcement of the NES Classic and its subsequent discontinuation, then the SNES Classic was announced and those shipments were meant to end later this year.
Once again, Nintendo has brought hope by announcing, that the NES Classic will be returning to shelves in 2018, likewise, the SNES Classic will continue to be shipped through 2018, while in Japan, the Famicom Mini is resuming production in 2018 and the Super Famicom will continue shipping after October.
Following the end of production of the NES Classic and the subsequent vanishing of remaining stock from shelves, Nintendo’s argument to disappointed customers was that the NES was not intended as a long-term product and that interested consumers could purchase the upcoming Super NES Classic. It seems the Japanese gaming company has had a change of heart and decided to extend the NES Classic’s shelf life for some more time.
Announcements were also made on Twitter with regards to the NES and SNES availability in Europe.
Nintendo said the reason for continuing the SNES Classic was due to consistently high demand. The gaming company also said that it’ll be available in stores on September 29th at a price of $79.99 and will come with “21 of the Legendary Super NES Games such as Super Mario World, The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past and Super Metroid.”
Hopefully, production quantities will be enough to quell demand sufficiently while putting an end to scalpers and NES clones that are available for sale.

iPhone X: Face ID, OLED screen, wireless charging and the other features you'll care about most

Good-bye Home button, hello OLED, Face ID, and Animoji. Here’s everything you need to know about the iPhone X announcement.
iPhone X: It’s real, it’s here, and it’s very expensive. After months of rumor and speculation, followed by the biggest pre-launch leak ever, on Tuesday we finally laid eyes on the iPhone X (you pronounce it “iPhone Ten”) . It comes with a jet-black OLED screen topped by a TrueDetect camera system that enables a brand-new Face ID unlocking system and Animoji features.
Apple will take preorders for the iPhone X starting Friday, October 27, and the phones ship November 3. iPhone X starts at $999 for 64GB of storage (the highest starting price of any iPhone to date) , with a 256GB upgrade for $1149. To compare, the just-announced 4.7-inch iPhone 8 is $699 for the same storage.
Here’s how Apple justified that purchase price on stage at the Steve Jobs Theater.
With the new thin bezel and—gasp—no Home button, holding the iPhone X will feel like you’ re holding a screen. That screen is 5.8 inches diagonally, and uses an OLED display instead of the LCD screen in past models. It’s got a resolution of 2436×1125, for a shocking pixel density of 458 ppi. Apple’s calling it Super Retina. Like the iPhone 8, it supports TrueTone to adjust the color temperature to the ambient light around you.
The iPhone X has no bottom bezel for the home button, and only a small notch along the top edge for the FaceTime camera, so it’s physically smaller than the iPhone 8 Plus, which has a 5.5-inch screen.
Pretty impressive specs, Phil.
The switch to OLED is probably to blame for the iPhone X’s later release date, but other phones that have gone to OLED—like the Samsung Galaxy S8 and the 2016 Google Pixel —enjoy blacker blacks, brighter colors, and a more edge-to-edge display, as OLED displays are more flexible to accommodate the gentle curve at the edges of a phone.
Apple was already using small OLED displays in the Apple Watch, but manufacturing iPhone-sized OLEDs at scale could be a manufacturing challenge, and we hope it doesn’ t make the iPhone X too hard to find in stores this holiday season.
You might think the switch to OLED would also affect battery life, but Apple claims the iPhone X will get two additional hours of battery life over the iPhone 8. Obviously, this is something we’ ll test in our review, and battery life varies based on how you use your phone, but Apple’s estimates are usually reliable.
Without a home button for Touch ID, how does one unlock the iPhone X? With your face! Apple demonstrated Face ID, which uses a TrueDepth camera-and-sensor system along the top edge to detect your face quickly, even in the dark—and even with glasses on, or after a dramatic haircut.
You’ll set up Face ID just like Touch ID. Only instead of scanning your thumbprint, it has you tilt your head around so it can scan your whole face.
Face ID uses more points of comparison than Touch ID, and the iPhone X uses depth sensing so you shouldn’ t be able to fool the system with a photograph or even a high-quality mask. You have to actually look at the iPhone too—if your eyes are closed or you’ re looking away, it won’ t work. So, no, your kids can’ t unlock your iPhone while you’ re asleep. (And they could do that with Touch ID!) Be careful if you have an evil twin, though, warns Phil Schiller.
TrueDepth uses a whole array of sensors to get this done, in fact. Infrared sensors can detect your face in the dark. The dot projector helps create a mathmatical model of your face and compare it to the stored model. A machine-learning neural engine is even built into the iPhone X’s A11 Bionic chip to process FaceID in real time, right on the device. But because Touch ID has gotten so fast, Apple really has a high bar to clear with Face ID.
The TrueDepth system combines cameras and sensors to enable Face ID as well as Animoji.
To access the home screen or multitasking menu, you just swipe up from the bottom edge of the screen. Swipe up quickly to go to the home screen, like you’ re sweeping the app off the screen, or pause mid-swipe to instead go to the app switcher. You can even swipe between apps if you swipe along the very bottom edge of the screen. You can summon Siri by saying “Hey Siri, ” or just by pressing and holding the Sleep/Wake button on the side of the iPhone X.
Apple Pay also uses Face ID to authenticate transactions. Apps can use the Face ID system too, just like they could use Touch ID already.
Like the iPhone 7 Plus, the iPhone X sports two 12-megapixels cameras on the rear, only this time the lenses are stacked vertically. They still protrude from the back of the phone just slightly, but it’s hard to mind when you consider the specs: dual optical image stabilization, larger sensors for lower-light performance, higher dynamic range, zero shutter lag, and an improved quad-LED True Tone flash.
The iPhone X has two cameras, but stacked, rather than side-by-side on the iPhone 8 Plus.
On the front of the iPhone X, the TrueDepth face-recognizing camera system has more tricks than just Face ID. A new feature in Messages called Animoji can mimic your mood and expression. They track 50 facial muscles to sync the emoji with what you’ re saying, and then send your “talking head” to a friend. You get a dozen options at launch, including the poo emoji.
Yes, your dreams of turning yourself into an animated talking lump of excrement (or, I guess, chocolate pudding?) are finally coming true.
Inside, the iPhone X sports an A11 Bionic chip, which Apple says is 70 percent faster than the A10 Fusion in the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus. It has six cores, two for high-performance computing that are 25 percent faster, and four efficiency cores to save battery life during lower-intensity tasks. A performance controller can even combine all six cores at once.
The A11 Bionic will be a boon to augmented reality apps.
Apple even designed its own GPU, a three-core version that’s up to 30 percent faster than the GPU in the iPhone 7. Graphics performance is useful for more than just big-name games, though—the iPhone X needs it for augmented reality apps and machine learning too.
iPhone X supports wireless charging with the Qi standard, and Apple will offer existing Qi charging solutions in its retail stores. Next year, Apple will even sell its own extra-wide AirPower charging pad that can simultaneiously charge an iPhone X, an Apple Watch Series 3, and even a set of AirPods once you spring for a new charging case that supports Qi.
The AirPower dock (coming in 2018) can charge an iPhone X, Apple Watch Series 3, and AirPods’ upcoming Qi-compatible case.
iPhone X even has LTE Advanced and Bluetooth 5.0, along with stereo speakers and the same dust- and water-resistance as the iPhone 7.
This new technology doesn’ t come cheap, and the iPhone X will start at $999 for 64GB of storage. You can increase that to 256GB for $1,149.
It’s a looker.
iPhone X comes in space gray or silver—sorry, fans of rose gold and the new bronze-ish gold iPhone 8! Because the bezel on the front is so small, both iPhone X colors have a black front, while the silver iPhone 8 has a white bezel around the screen.
Apple will take preorders starting Friday, October 27, and the iPhone X will ship a week later on November 3. If you need an iPhone before that, the iPhone 8 ships on September 22 (preorders September 15) , at $699 for 64GB, with a 256GB option too. But the 10th anniversary, flagship iPhone X is the real deal, and we can’ t wait to give it a thorough review.

“We’ ve never had any phone that cost this much, ” Creative Strategies analyst, Ben Bajarin told the FT. He observes that Apple recognizes the strength of its customer loyalty and is simply “giving them more options”.
Apple already has the highest margins in the industry, but the high-end device will “test the price elasticity of regular consumers, ” IHS analyst Wayne Lam said.
Longbow Research analysis across 35 firms thought to supply components for Apple’s new devices suggests Apple is targeting higher sales than it achieved with either iPhone 6S or iPhone 7, but not quite as high as the ‘super upgrade cycle’ that met the 2014’s iPhone 6.
Those claims aren’ t quite as optimistic as those from Cannacord Genuity, who last week wrote:
“We believe there is a large group of iPhone 6 consumers positioned to upgrade to the new iPhone products, and therefore we are modelling the percent of iPhone users to upgrade to a new iPhone to increase to 32.4% in C2018 from roughly 28.0% in C2016 and C2017.”
TrendForce predicts Apple will sell around 227.5 million iPhones, up 5.6 percent and higher than the smartphone industry growth forecast.
Prevailing wisdom claims Apple is sinking in China as local vendors pick up the market at the iPhone’s expense. Not so, argues Morgan Stanley analyst, Katy Huberty, “You’ ve seen weakness at a number of semiconductor companies that sell into those cheaper brands, ” she said. “Their business has been very weak because there’s inventory in the system. That means the shipment data is overstated.”
“Due to component supply constraints, we estimate current production of the OLED iPhone at less than 10k units per day, which means the model will remain in severe short supply for a while, ” wrote KGI Securities Analyst Ming-Chi Ku.
Morgan Stanley analyst, Katy Huberty, raised her Apple target from $203 to $253 overnight on strength of ARKit. She believes the tech will generate new profit boosts for a wide tranche of firms, but warns that while Apple has first mover advantage, it can’ t rest on its laurels. “Apple is clearly in the lead but the Android ecosystem isn’t far behind – Apple’s ARKit for developers launched in June 2017, and Google’s ARCore Launched in late August 2017, ” she says.
Apple won’ t have its own wireless charging solution to share this time round, instead it will support third-party Qi inductive charging solutions. (Which even Ikea sell) . KGI Securities Analyst Ming-Chi Ku says Apple is waiting on “technological breakthroughs” before it introduces its own take on wireless charging. I wonder what such a breakthrough might involve?
There are some benefits to the deployment of OLED displays, though there may also be some dangers, said Russ Ernst of the Blancco Technology Group.
He thinks Apple will try to introduce a range of protective cases: “As smartphones become more thin and curved, it’s easier for manufacturers to work with glass than metal. On the down side, it makes these smartphones extremely fragile and fingerprint attractive.
“Apple will try to introduce and upsell protective cases to overcome this problem. With drastic design changes though, there are always surprises, as in the case of the “death grip” issue during the iPhone 4’s release, ” he said in a note provided to me.
The jury is split when it comes to making Apple Watch more like a phone with its own LTE connection. Some expect sales to spike, but Loup Ventures analyst, Gene Munster warns: “It’s a really big deal for the wearables category for Apple, but it’s not a big deal for the company, ” as it will remain hooked on iPhone sales.
As competitors develop better user interfaces, one of the key reasons to own an Apple TV is being eroded. Apple’s focus on original content is mandatory, said Creative Strategies analysts, Carolina Milanesi. “If Apple wants to be competitive they have to go all in.”
“Apple deliberately kept the feature sets for HomePod quiet at WWDC, ” said CCS Insights analyst Geoff Blaber. He predicts the company will reveal more about the product’s compatibility with other Apple products and services.
“Call it the subscription economy: not yet, but someday Apple will likely offer bundles of services and products as a simple monthly fee, like the iPhone Upgrade Program but with everything included, ” said Forrester VP, Principal Analyst, Frank Gillet, echoing previous predictions from CCS Insights.
Apple is coming from a pretty strong position as it upgrades its devices on the tenth anniversary of its smartphone. The world’s number two smartphone vendor by sales, the iPhone 7 was the single best-selling model in Q2 2017 and it has shipped 1.2 billion iPhones since 2007.
A recent 451 Research survey suggests 95 percent satisfaction among U. S. iPhone customers and some analysts claim that around a third of existing users will upgrade this year. The global active iPhone user base is thought to be around 600 million. (More stats here) .

Про це повідомила у Facebook речниця прокуратури Києва Надія Максимець.
“Апеляційний суд залишив без змін ухвалу Шевченківського райсуду м. Києва про особисту поруку (результативна частина рішення) “, – написала вона.
В апеляційній скарзі прокурор просив скасувати ухвалу суду першої інстанції, якою Шуфрич був відпущений на поруки батька, і прийняти нову – про його цілодобовий домашній арешт.
За словами Максимець, прокуратура вважає, що Шевченковский суд не надав оцінку тій обставині, що поручитель є рідним батьком підозрюваного.
“У такому разі інтереси власного сина можуть переважити обов’язок поручителя перед судом”, – каже вона.
Також, пише речниця, прокурор вніс клопотання про допит у судовому засіданні представника потерпілого щодо стану його здоров’я на даний час.
За її словами, близько 12-ї години суд пішов у нарадчу кімнату, після чого оголосив рішення – залишити сина Нестора Шуфрича на поруках батька.
Як відомо, 26 серпня Нестор Шуфрич-молодший наїхав на чоловіка на Bentley свого товариша – реп-виконавця Pabl. A, аварія сталася в Києві на вулиці Шота Руставелі. Чоловік сильно постраждав і проходить лікування. Прокуратура повідомила про підозру синові народного депутата у порушенні правил дорожнього руху, що спричинило тяжкі тілесні ушкодження. Прокуратура Києва оскаржила рішення Шевченківського райсуду столиці про те, щоб відпустити Нестора Шуфрича-молодшого на поруки батька – депутата Верховної Ради від “Опозиційного блоку”.

As Nintendo itself puts it: “The classic NES is back in a familiar-yet-new form as a mini replica of Nintendo’s original home console. Relive past glories, defeat the boss that you could never beat, or simply enjoy the classic titles of yesteryear anew.”
You may also see it called the ‘Nintendo NES Classic Edition’ or just ‘NES Mini’, but they’re all the same thing. Just don’t confuse it with Nintendo’s rumoured SNES Classic, the expected follow-up console.
Just in time to fill homes around the world with joy at Christmas, the Nintendo Classic Mini released on 11 November 2016.
The console quickly became almost impossible to get hold of in stores thanks to widespread stock shortages, and in April 2017 Nintendo announced that it had discontinued the NES Classic – so if you didn’t get one quickly, you’re now stuck turning to the second-hand market.
While the RRP was £49/$60, you can now expect to pay much more than that to pick one up. Amazon marketplace resellers are offering it for premium prices starting at £81 at the time of writing, while on eBay consoles are typically going for around £120.

Although it’s a NES (Nintendo Entertainment System) , the new console features modern specs including HDMI so you won’t need to be searching the web for SCART adapters or such like. It’s also powered with a USB cable, although the AC adapter for the USB cable isn’t supplied in the box.
The console is pretty low-tech so can’t access the internet for things like the eShop, nor can it take any existing cartridges you might have.
What is in the box is a single Nintendo Classic Mini: NES Controller which has the same shape and style as the original NES controller. You can play two player by getting a second or using a Wii Classic Controller or Classic Controller Pro.
A cool feature of the Nintendo Classic Mini: NES Controller is that it can be used to play Virtual Console NES games on a Wii or Wii U console – you simply plug it into the bottom of the Wii Remote.
Nintendo said players needn’t worry about losing any hard-earned progress either because each game has multiple suspend points, so you can start where you left off easily.
Included with the Nintendo Classic Mini is a total of 30 games including classics such as Kirby’s Adventure, Castlevania, Donkey Kong, The Legend of Zelda and Super Mario Bros. See below for the full list:
