'VOTE ROY MOORE!': Trump goes all-in on Alabama race

0

Donald Trump threw his full weight Friday behind Roy Moore, the Alabama Republican running for the US Senate with the president’s support despite being accused of molesting teenaged girls.”VOTE ROY MOORE!
Donald Trump threw his full weight Friday behind Roy Moore, the Alabama Republican running for the US Senate with the president’s support despite being accused of molesting teenaged girls.
“VOTE ROY MOORE!” tweeted the US leader, who later Friday heads to Pensacola on the Florida-Alabama state line for a campaign-style rally seen as reaffirmation of his backing for Moore in next week’s closely-watched election.
Trump earlier this week officially endorsed the ultra-conservative Christian in the December 12 vote — a change of tack after he initially characterized the allegations against Moore as “very troubling.”
Moore, a 70-year-old former state judge, stands accused of sexual assault by several women who were teenagers at the time, including one who was 14.
Trump has cited Moore’s potentially decisive Senate vote on everything from immigration to abortion as reasons to support him, saying a victory for his Democratic rival Doug Jones would be a “disaster.”
“LAST thing the Make America Great Again Agenda needs is a Liberal Democrat in Senate where we have so little margin for victory already,” he repeated Friday.
Jones, Trump tweeted, “would vote against us 100% of the time.”
“He’s bad on Crime, Life, Border, Vets, Guns & Military.”
The Alabama race, which is being held to replace Jeff Sessions — who Trump named US attorney general — has national repercussions because the Republicans hold a slim 52-48 majority in the Senate. A win for Jones would make it 51-49.
Moore’s local supporters have dismissed the allegations against him, first reported by the Washington Post, as part of a politically-motivated campaign to undermine his election bid.
At the national level, however, Republicans fear the race will give the impression the party tolerates abusive behavior towards women, as the country grapples with snowballing allegations of harassment and assault in the worlds of politics, entertainment and the media.
On Thursday, US Senator Al Franken became the second prominent Democrat in a week to resign in the face of accusations of sexual misconduct — in his case that he kissed and touched several women without consent.
In a defiant resignation address, the comedian-turned-lawmaker noted with bitter irony that Moore was running for election with the president’s support — while accused of far more serious offenses.

Apple’s TV app goes live in U. K., France, and Germany

0

Apple’s unified hub for streaming media apps finally extends its reach.
Previously available only in the U. S., Canada, Australia, Norway, and Sweden, the TV app hasn’t felt like a very important part of the iOS/tvOS ecosystem. Today, its reach extends considerably.
Though Apple has yet to make an official announcement, the TV app has started to pop up on devices in France, Germany, and the U. K. You’ll see it on iPhones, iPads, and Apple TV ( 4th generation and Apple TV 4K). The list of apps supported by the TV app varies by country; U. K. viewers should see content from BBC iPlayer, ITV, and My5 in addition to services like Amazon Prime Video and Hopster. App updates may be required in some cases.
This appears to be a server-side update, with some users in these regions reporting that the TV app spontaneously replaces the Videos app. As long as you’re on iOS 11.2 and tvOS 11.2, you shouldn’t need to download an OS update or restart. The rollout appears staggered, so don’t be surprised if it takes a day or two to show up.

14 UN peacekeepers killed,53 hurt in Congo attack – Orange County Register

By SALEH MWANAMILONGO and EDITH M. LEDERER
KINSHASA, Congo — In the deadliest single attack on a United Nations peacekeeping mission in recent memory, rebels in eastern Congo killed at least 14 peacekeepers and wounded 53 others in an assault on their base that was launched at nightfall and went on for hours.
U. N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres expressed “outrage and utter heartbreak” and called the attack a war crime, urging Congolese authorities to swiftly investigate. The State Department’s Bureau of African Affairs said it was “horrified.”
The peacekeepers killed were from Tanzania. At least five Congolese soldiers also were killed in the attack Thursday evening that has been blamed on one of the region’s deadliest rebel groups.
Three peacekeepers remained missing, the U. N. said. More than 20 were evacuated for medical treatment in the regional capital, Goma.
It was not clear when military reinforcements arrived after the attack, the U. N. said. Conditions in the region are “very, very challenging,” said U. N. peacekeeping chief Jean-Pierre Lacroix, who said the attack followed a recent increase in activities by various armed groups. He called the assault a response to the U. N. mission’s own “increasingly robust posture.”
“We are disturbing them,” he said. “They do not like it.”
The peacekeeping base is about 45 kilometers (27 miles) from the town of Beni, which has been repeatedly attacked by the Allied Democratic Forces rebel group, which is suspected in Thursday’s assault. The base is home to the U. N. mission’s rapid intervention force, which has a rare mandate to go on the offensive against armed groups in the vast, mineral-rich region.
The U. N. mission in Congo is the largest and most expensive in the world, and it has been a high-profile target of the Trump administration’s cost-cutting efforts. Nearly 300 peacekeepers have been killed since the mission arrived in 1999, according to U. N. data. The mission has a budget of $1.14 billion and over 16,500 soldiers.
Congo, the size of Western Europe, has seen immeasurable cruelty and greed as a result of its mineral resources while more than 80 percent of the population lives below the absolute poverty line of $1.25 a day. The nation suffered through one of the most brutal colonial reigns ever known before undergoing decades of corrupt dictatorship. Back-to-back civil wars later drew in a number of neighboring countries.
Many rebel groups have come and gone during the U. N. mission’s years of operation, at times invading the regional capital.
One of the greatest threats now comes from the ADF. While the fighters are mainly Muslim, experts say there are no proven links between the rebels and other extremist organizations in Africa.
The ADF “has an agenda both ideological and extremist in nature but also focused… on exploitation of illegal resources,” Lacroix said. He accused the rebels of preying on the local population.
The rebels once aimed to overthrow President Yoweri Museveni’s regime in neighboring Uganda. By the 1990s, they had established themselves in Congo.
The ADF intensified attacks several years ago, and human rights groups say at least 1,000 people have been killed in the last three years. About a dozen of the rebels have been sentenced to death on charges related to participating in an insurrection movement.
The U. N. mission in 2006 helped carry out Congo’s first free and fair elections in 46 years, but since then the winner of that vote, President Joseph Kabila, has become further entrenched. Anger has grown as presidential elections originally set for late last year have been repeatedly delayed. The government has blamed insecurity as a factor.
The U. N. secretary-general in October warned that without real progress toward the elections, Congo “is likely to enter a period of extreme volatility.”

(…) Chciałbym, aby politycy w Polsce respektowali reguły konstytucyjne. Dzisiaj prezydent i premier mają inne znaczenie niż przed 2015 rokiem
On do złudzenia przypomina model jaki jest w Rosji i Turcji

Elderly man kills 1 of 2 intruders

0

Don Lutz, an 84-year-old Korean War veteran of Ellport, Penn., told police he fired one shot at the two intruders who broke into his home Thursday, killing one of them while the other ran off.
Don Lutz said he knew “God was with him” when he heard intruders busting into his home in Ellport, Penn., he told WTAE.
The 84-year-old Korean War Veteran sleeps with a gun under his pillow, and grabbed the weapon before springing out of bed to confront his unwanted guests, CBS Pittsburgh reported.
“Woken up to them busting in on my front door, and I went out in the hallway in the dark, and I met this one guy, and he went to grab me and that’s when I shot him,” he told CBS Pittsburgh.
He said he “scuffled” with the two intruders on the floor, then he fired one shot in the dark that killed one of the intruders, WPXI reports. The other ran off after the shot was fired and is not in police custody.
He told WPXI that “he’s a little sore” after the fight.
Neither of the intruders’ identities or descriptions have been released to the public, according to WTAE. Lutz will not be charged as police are calling this a “justified shooting” after questioning him at the station.
The investigation is still ongoing, CBS Pittsburgh reports.
Pennsylvania, like many other states, has “Stand Your Ground” laws to protect people acting out in self defense. Under the law, the use of force in self defense is justifiable if “immediately necessary for the purpose of protecting himself against the use of unlawful force by such other person on the present occasion.”
A lot of people on social media are praising Lutz for his quick actions.
“Kudos to the elderly man… They probably thought he was an easy target because he is elderly but the man showed them real quick,” a reader wrote on Facebook.
Others were conflicted with showing praise.
“This guy was protecting himself, and he has no idea what might have happened if he didn’t. I don’t fault him. But he still took a human life,” another person wrote.

Trump signs 2-week spending bill to avoid government shutdown

President Donald Trump on Friday signed a spending bill to avoid a government shutdown and keep the federal government running through Dec. 22.
President Donald Trump on Friday signed a spending bill to avoid a government shutdown and keep the federal government running through Dec. 22.
The president signed the two-week spending measure in private at the White House after the House and Senate acted to prevent a government shutdown this weekend. The funding reprieve comes as the White House and congressional leaders are negotiating a longer-term agreement, building off a Thursday meeting involving Trump and congressional leaders.
The White House and lawmakers said the bill will give them more time to negotiate several end-of-the-year agenda items, including the budget, a children’s health program and hurricane aid. Administration and congressional aides were continuing the talks on Friday.
“We hope that we’re going to make some great progress for our country. I think that will happen,” Trump said Thursday in the Oval Office. Added Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer of New York: “Funding the government is extremely important, helping our soldiers is very important and helping average citizens is very important. So we’re here in the spirit of: Let’s get it done.”
The two-week measure funds government agencies from the Defense Department to the IRS. It also makes money available to several states running out of funds for the Children’s Health Insurance Program. The popular health care program provides medical care to more than 8 million children.

Here’s a look at some of the standouts, and their prospects for being…
The White House and lawmakers have been discussing relief from a budget freeze on the Pentagon and domestic agencies, extending the children’s health program and providing more disaster aid to hurricane-ravaged Puerto Rico, Texas and Florida.
Negotiators are also seeking ways of addressing protections for immigrants who were brought to the country illegally as children.
Republican leaders have said they agree with the need to address immigration, including the almost 1 million immigrants given protections by former President Barack Obama. Trump has sought stronger border security and immigration enforcement as part of the talks and the White House said Thursday that “negotiations on immigration should be held separately on a different track” to avoid slowing down funding increases for the Pentagon.
