REPORT: Trump Firmly Believes Moore Is Innocent

0

Trump has told close confidants in recent days that he firmly believes in Alabama Republican senate candidate Roy Moore’s innocence.
President Donald Trump has told close confidants in recent days that he firmly believes in Alabama Republican senate candidate Roy Moore’s innocence and has expressed no trepidation about endorsing the accused child molester, three sources close to the president told The Daily Beast.
Trump, who publicly endorsed Moore in a Monday morning tweet, had reportedly doubted the allegations since mid-November, but those doubts have been solidified in the last week — even as the White House has publicly maintained the accusations are credible but not disqualifying.
“This is not something he’s struggling with,” one senior White House official told The Daily Beast of Trump.
Trump has even begun to embrace Moore’s own defensive talking points in private conversations, telling a close friend and a senior administration official that Moore’s signature in one accuser’s high school year book is likely a forgery.
White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders told reporters “the president’s position hasn’t changed,” and said that he still finds the numerous allegations of sexual harassment of teens “concerning.”
The White House has maintained a hedged position since The Washington Post first reported in early November that Moore disrobed and groped a fourteen year old girl as a 32-year-old. After weeks of refusing to comment on the allegations, Trump offered comments sympathetic to Moore before heading to Mar-A-Lago for Thanksgiving, telling reporters he “denies it — he totally denies it. That’s all I can say.”
Trump again broke with the White House’s neutral strategy Monday morning, endorsing Moore with an enthusiastic tweet and a phone call from Air Force One, in which he reportedly told Moore “Go get ’em, Roy!”
Despite his private dismissal of Moore’s accusers, Trump sought to frame his endorsement in pragmatic political terms while addressing reporters Tuesday afternoon.
“We don’t want to have a liberal Democrat in Alabama, believe me,” he told reporters in the West Wing. “We want strong borders, we want stopping crime, we want to have the things that we represent and we certainly don’t want to have a liberal Democrat that’s controlled by Nancy Pelosi and controlled by Chuck Schumer, we don’t want to have that for Alabama.”
Moore dropped precipitously in the polls following the allegations but his numbers have climbed in recent days, tightening the race.

North Korea's missile launch is a triumph for the rogue nation, 'worrisome' for the world

0

For more than two months, North Korea refrained from public displays of its nuclear and ballistic missile technology, offering guarded hope that the communist nation had paused its ambitions — at least for a bit. On Tuesday, it ushered in a new era that has the world worried.
For more than two months, North Korea refrained from public displays of its nuclear and ballistic missile technology, offering guarded hope that the communist nation had paused its ambitions — at least for a bit.
Such optimism disappeared on Wednesday when United States and South Korean military officials detected the early-morning launch of an intercontinental ballistic missile, a device capable in theory of reaching the East Coast.
The provocation marked a significant moment for the nuclear ambitious North Korea and an international community trying to stop its weapons development. At the same time, the North’s breakthrough opened the possibility that the reclusive country and its dynastic regime might have the confidence to negotiate with countries seeking to defuse tensions in the region, analysts said.
“We know they were building to this. They got it no matter how badly we wanted to stop them. Our options to stop them are still awful,” said Robert Kelly, an associate professor in the Department of Political Science and Diplomacy at Pusan National University in South Korea. “We are stuck. We have to adapt to North Korea as a nuclear power, and we will actually.”
The ICBM, the most powerful tested this year, soared higher than the International Space Station, some 2,800 miles, traveling east about 600 miles before splashing safely in the East Sea.
The launch of what the North Koreans called the new Hwasong-15 missile represented a turning point in the rogue nation’s weapons development. That effort, involving four nuclear tests and at least 70 missile launches since 2012, has repeatedly violated United Nations resolutions and prompted economic sanctions.
President Trump said the United States would “handle” the threat, but security experts remained stumped about the international community’s options to slow North Korea’s advance to a full-fledged nuclear power capable of attacking around the globe.
That pessimistic outlook was forecast the day before by a key South Korean government official, Cho Myoung-Gyon, the minister of unification. While noting totalitarian North Korea’s relatively quiet period without missile or nuclear “provocations,” he said that the totalitarian nation had ruled out dialogue with the democratic South — and that its technological capacity would likely advance faster than expected.
The two nations, which share ethnic background and language, were separated after World War II — a split solidified by the Korean War, which is still technically unsettled, prompting six decades of tensions and the constant threat of another armed conflict.
South Korea has transformed itself from an impoverished nation since the war into a democratic state with one of the largest economies in Asia. North Korea, however, has grown increasingly isolated over that time, impoverishing its people while also pursuing nuclear weapons and largely resisting outside efforts to slow its nuclear and missile advancement.
The development of a global nuclear capability — something relatively few nations have sought and achieved — has been a national goal for North Korea. Earlier this year, its young leader, Kim Jong Un, gave a televised speech explicitly revealing the effort.
And North Korean state media on Wednesday celebrated the launch, which came at 3:17 a.m., from a site north of its capital, Pyongyang. The statement seemed to confirm that the nation had reached one of its own milestones.
“We have finally realized the great historic cause of completing the state nuclear force, the cause of building a rocket power,” according to a statement released on the state-run Korea Central News Agency.
The launch prompted international condemnation, with the United States calling for an emergency meeting of the United Nations Security Council. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson condemned it in strong terms, seeking to maintain international pressure on Kim.
Many experts believe that curbing North Korea’s nuclear progress — a policy pursued unsuccessfully by three past United States presidents — will be difficult. Military strikes would likely be ineffective because many of North Korea’s missiles are mobile and stored in hardened locations.
Seoul, the South Korean capital with a metropolitan area of more than 20 million people, is also roughly 40 miles from the border between the two countries. That makes it vulnerable to conventional weapons such as artillery that North Korea could launch quickly if attacked by the United States.
Many experts believe dialogue is required to solve the crisis, or at least freeze North Korea’s advancement. But Kim and Trump have made the thorny issue of talks even more difficult given their hard-line rhetoric. Trump has called Kim “Little Rocket Man,” and Kim has said the president is a “dotard.”
Regional security analysts such as Duyeon Kim, a visiting senior fellow at the Korean Peninsula Future Forum in Seoul, said the international community should expect Pyongyang to continue its tests, despite objections from Washington, Seoul, Tokyo and Beijing.
Negotiations might happen once North Korea feels comfortable it has achieved its nuclear goals, which at the same time would strengthen its bargaining position, she said.
“The problem is that they’ll likely return to the table when they are technologically confident and ready. But by then, it’d be much harder, if not impossible, to roll back their program and the security situation will be far more serious,” she said.
The North’s missile breakthrough was a point of pride on Wednesday, as state television reported that Kim, the grandson of the communist nation’s founder, Kim Il Song, had approved and monitored the launch.
It released an image of a handwritten order, stating, “I authorize the missile test early morning of November 29th. Shoot the missile with courage for the party and the nation!”
While the reach displayed by the launch is worrisome, experts said hurdles remain for North Korea. The nation, believed to hold perhaps a few dozen nuclear weapons, still must perfect its ability to miniaturize a warhead for a long-range missile. North Korea has boasted about that progress, issuing pictures of Kim standing with warheads.
The nation also must feel confident in its ability to deploy long-range missiles that can proceed on a flatter trajectory, allowing them to reach not just space but distant targets after reentry through the atmosphere.
It also remains unclear whether the North’s long-range missile could carry a heavy nuclear warhead at a distance that would directly threaten Americans at home.
The nation boasted that the missile had been outfitted with a “super-large heavy warhead which is capable of striking the whole mainland of the U. S.,” a claim that couldn’t be verified.
The latest development left analysts convinced that North Korea, which believes its nuclear program is a strategic deterrent to the “imperialist” United States, is steadily marching ahead with its ambitions.
“It’s significant that they are continuing to work on this,” said David Wright, co-director of the Global Security Program at the Union of Concerned Scientists. “They are continuing to make progress.”

Valve's Portal returns as a Bridge Constructor spin-off later this month

0

Valve’s immensely popular puzzle game series, Portal, is getting a spin-off title later this month, as Headup Games announced ‘Bridge Constructor Portal’ today with a brand new trailer.
It has been over ten years since Valve’s incredibly popular puzzle game, Portal, arrived with The Orange Box bundle, with an equally popular sequel following in 2011. While everyone is waiting for Valve to release another sequel, Headup Games has announced ‘ Bridge Constructor Portal ‘.
As evident by its title, the game is an official mash-up of Portal and the physics-based title, Bridge Constructor. In its announcement, Headup Games said it has been working on the new game since last year, adding that it “fully embraces the Portal license, one of the most beloved video game franchises of the last decade.”
As per the announcement, the game’s description reads as follows, confirming that everyone’s favorite evil AI, GLaDOS, is making a return as well:
Bridge Constructor Portal is releasing just a couple of weeks from now, on December 20, for Windows, macOS, Linux, and mobile devices. Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and Nintendo Switch releases are also planned, but are slated to launch in early 2018 instead. While this may not be the Portal sequel fans were hoping for, if Valve isn’t going to make use of its game series’ it is reassuring to see at least someone is.

Here’s a brief history of every country that’s been banned from the Olympic games

0

Several nations have been barred from competing in the Olympics throughout the Games’ storied history.
On Tuesday, the International Olympic Committee announced that it had banned Russia from competing in the 2018 Winter Olympic Games in Pyeongchang, South Korea.
In its announcement, the IOC explained that government officials will be barred from attending the games and the nation’s flag will not be displayed during the opening or closing ceremonies because of the country’s “systemic manipulation of the anti-doping system.” Individual athletes may apply for special permission to compete, but will do so under a neutral uniform.
And the punishment didn’t stop at barring athletes from future competitions. As the New York Times explained, officials are still sorting through tainted urine tests from the 2014 Sochi Games in Russia. As they do, they are actively rescinding medals from athletes found to have been doping. Thomas Bach, president if the IOC, told the Times that there would be a special medal ceremony at the upcoming winter games to reassign medals to retroactive winners.
And to pour salt in the wound, the Russian Olympic Committee was also fined $15 million.
However, Russia isn’t the only nation to ever be barred from competing in the Olympic Games. Keep scrolling to learn more about the other countries who have been banned from attending.

"Time" kürt Menschen hinter #MeToo zur "Person des Jahres"

0

#Metoo: Dominoeffekt made in Hollywood
Auf der Shortlist für die diesjährige Auszeichnung standen außerdem der nordkoreanische Machthaber Kim Jong Un, Amazon-Chef Jeff Bezos, die “Dreamer” (Kinder illegaler Einwanderer), “Wonder Woman” Regisseurin Patty Jenkins, der Sportler Colin Kaepernick (er kniete während der Nationalhymne), US-Sonderermittler Robert Mueller und Saudi-Arabiens Kronprinz Mohammed bin Salman.
Im Vorjahr war US-Präsident Donald Trump die Ehre zuteil geworden.

Bundesliga: Armin Veh wird Geschäftsführer beim 1. FC Köln

0

Schmadtke an. Schmadtke und der 1. FC Köln hatten sich am 23.
Oktober wegen unterschiedlicher Auffassungen in der sportlichen Krise in
beiderseitigem Einvernehmen getrennt.
Profis verantwortlich. Ruthenbeck gibt am Donnerstagabend in der
Europa-League-Begegnung des 1. FC Köln bei Roter Stern Belgrad seinen
Einstand.

Former Dem Staffer: Franken Tried To Kiss Me

0

A former Democratic congressional aide is accusing Democratic Minnesota Sen. Al Franken of trying to kiss her after a taping of his radio show in 2006.
A former Democratic congressional aide is accusing Democratic Minnesota Sen. Al Franken of trying to kiss her after a taping of his radio show in 2006.
The woman told POLITICO that she was gathering her things to leave the radio studio when she turned around and Franken was in her face.
She says she avoided his kiss and hurriedly left the room, but Franken told her on her way out, “It’s my right as an entertainer.”
“He was between me and the door and he was coming at me to kiss me. It was very quick and I think my brain had to work really hard to be like ‘Wait, what is happening?’ But I knew whatever was happening was not right and I ducked,” the aide said. “I was really startled by it and I just sort of booked it towards the door and he said, ‘It’s my right as an entertainer.’”
Two coworkers independently verified the aide’s version of events to POLITICO. One was told about the incident shortly after it happened in 2006, while the other was told in 2009 or 2010.
Franken said the allegation is “categorically not true” and the idea he would say it was his “right” to kiss her is “preposterous.”
The Democratic aide is the seventh woman to accuse Franken of sexual misconduct.
The aide said she was inspired to come forward by Franken’s various apologies, because she did not feel they expressed full culpability. In many of the apologies, Franken claimed to recall a different version of events.
“I don’t want to be in the position of deciding whether to tell this story, but I’m not the person who put me in that position. He did that,” the aide said. “I think for this moment in time to lead to meaningful change there has to be more than ‘I’m ashamed but I remember things differently’ accounting.”
She also said it bothered her to see Franken in 2016 condemning then-candidate Donald Trump after the Access Hollywood tape came out.
“I felt like it was really hypocritical,” she asserted.

Video: Russland will zunächst nicht gegen Olympia-Ausschluss vorgehen

Ventura County, California – Burning with extreme speed and ferocity, a flurry of wildfires torched more than 65,000 acres in Southern California, as firefighters struggled to contain the simultaneous infernos.
Authorities closed the 405 Freeway northbound Wednesday morning.
Powerful Santa Ana winds and extremely dry conditions fueled at least five wildfires Tuesday, marking what has been a devastating year for fires in California.
The latest fires forced tens of thousands to flee their homes, burned down more than a hundred buildings and triggered power outages in the region.
• Curfew enacted: On Tuesday, the city of Ventura declared a daily curfew, beginning 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. The curfew is to protect residents and prevent crime such as looting in the evacuation areas, the city said.
• Fire jumps freeway: The largest fire, called the Thomas Fire, was seen reaching the 101 freeway, north of Ventura, and even jumping across to the other side of the freeway.
• Blazing fast: The Thomas Fire had been burning at nearly an acre per second Tuesday. At that speed, it would have covered Manhattan’s Central Park in about 15 minutes.
• Mass exodus: Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti said about 150,000 people in Los Angeles were affected by evacuation orders for another fire, called the Creek Fire, near Sylmar and Lake View Terrace.
• Power outage: About 43,000 homes are without power, according to Southern California Edison Tuesday night. More outages are possible because flames were burning along power transmission paths, a spokeswoman said.
• Other fires: The Rye Fire near Santa Clarita in Los Angeles County grew to about 5,000 acres and was 5% contained. That fire was spotted near the Six Flags Magic Mountain in Valencia.
In San Bernardino County, two smaller fires sprang up. One is fully contained while the Little Mountain fire, at 100 acres, is 0% contained.
After a slowdown Tuesday night, the Santa Ana winds are expected to pick back up Wednesday into Thursday, which could complicate firefighting efforts.
The largest of the blazes, called the Thomas Fire, spanned 50,000 acres (about 78 square miles) in Ventura County, which sits just north of Los Angeles. The fire was at 0% containment as of Tuesday night.
In Ventura, a city of more than 100,000 on the Pacific coast, more than a quarter of its residents (38,000 people), had been told to evacuate. The number of destroyed structures was unknown due to the intensity of the fire, but officials had estimated about 150 buildings early Tuesday.
In Los Angeles, another fire called the Creek Fire went from 4,000 acres to 11,000 in a matter of hours Tuesday.
“We expect to be out here all week fighting and containing this fire,” LA Mayor Eric Garcetti said.
The fires spewed so much smoke that they were captured in a NASA image from space.
California Gov. Jerry Brown declared an emergency for Ventura County, freeing state resources such as the National Guard to support response efforts.
The fire had torn through neighborhoods, razing homes to the ground, reducing them to gray smoldering ashes. It also burned Vista del Mar Hospital, an 82-bed mental health facility in northwestern Ventura, which was fully evacuated two hours before, county fire engineer Richard Macklin said.
Residents who had to evacuate from their homes described tense moments as the fires rapidly approached.
“The embers from the trees were dropping on our cars,” said Mary Robinson, a Ventura resident, who fled Monday night. “We’re so blessed that we still have a house. I can’t believe it, because the fire was so close.”
Another Ventura resident, Samantha Wells-Zuniga, escaped with her family and watched her entire apartment complex called the Hawaiian Village, burn down.
Speaking through tears, she told CNN affiliate KABC, “We’ve been watching all these disasters on TV, you really don’t think about when it happens to you, and what do you pack in that moment?”
They escaped with a few Christmas presents.
“Now, everything that I have, except for my lovely family, is gone,” she said.
The Thomas fire jumped to thousands of acres with startling speed as Santa Ana winds, blowing as fast as 35 to 50 mph, carried its embers. The fire quickly devoured dry chaparral, as the county has been in a period of moderate drought.
Satellite images show how fast it lit up neighborhoods at night.
The winds were part of the season’s “ strongest and longest” Santa Ana event. The Santa Anas are strong, dry winds that high-pressure systems push from east to west, from the mountains and desert areas down into the Los Angeles area.
A red-flag warning, which is for extreme weather conditions that could cause wildfires, is in effect until 8 p.m. PT Friday.
