Apple iPhone X Design, Release Date, Price: Everything You Need To Know

0

The iPhone X is finally here with all these amazing features.
The iPhone X — pronounced “ten” — has finally arrived, and it confirms everything the rumors and leaks said about it. The edge-to-edge design aims to rival the Galaxy S8, and its technology upgrades aim to set the path for future smartphones in the next decade.
The leaks and prototypes we’ ve previously seen turned out to be legit. The iPhone X sports a glass panel on the back built with a stainless steel frame. The display dissolves seamlessly into the chassis, making for a sleek-looking device.
Apple introduces its new Super Retina display with 2436 x 1125 resolution with over 2.7 million pixels. This new technology boasts brightness, wide color support, and color accuracy on top of the traditional OLED display features, such as great contrast, high resolution, and thinness.
The edge-to-edge display is made possible by ditching the home button. For the front peripherals, there is a small area at the top that houses the camera and sensors. At the back, there is a dual-camera set-up that’s positioned vertically to better support augmented reality features. It’s where you would also expect a dedicated Touch ID sensor, as in the case of the Galaxy S8, but there is none. The presentation didn’ t mention Touch ID, which leads us to conclude that the all-new facial recognition system is what Apple has replaced the fingerprint scanner with.
The iPhone X, in the words of Phil Schiller, is water- and dust-resistant at a microscopic level. There’s no IP68 certification as usual, as Apple doesn’ t mind going through the process of getting their phones certified. However, what really stood out from the presentation is the new facial recognition system.
The technology makes use of floor illuminator, dot projector, infrared camera, and TrueDepth camera system to create a mathematical model of the user’s face. Once a face is registered on the phone, you can unlock the iPhone X just by looking at it.
The best thing about it is it maps your face accurately so that you can change your hairstyle, wear a hat, or wear glasses and still be able to log into your phone. It takes into account your facial changes through time, so you can also grow a beard without needing to update. It also works great in low-light settings so you can use it day or night.
The facial recognition system is smart and secure enough to recognize a photograph from a real face. It is also more secure than Touch ID. In fingerprint scanning, there’s a one in 50,000 chance that a random person can unlock your phone with his fingerprint. Whereas in facial scanning, there’s a one in 1,000,000 chance that a random person can unlock your phone with his face.
Facial scanning currently works with Apple Pay and some third party apps. Another use it has is for Animojis, which is short for animated emojis. The system maps your face and projects it to your chosen emoji. It can track 50 facial muscle movements, so your emojis can look alive. You can send a video to have an emoji talking to your recipient, or you can use it to react to messages.
New iPhone X Features Make Your Life Easier And Better
Wireless charging has finally come to iPhone X. With Qi Wireless Charging standard, you can simply place your phone on a wireless pad to start charging your phone — no need for cables. Apple has also developed its own, called AirPower. It’s a wide pad that’s able to charge your iPhone X, your Apple Watch, and your AirPods through its wireless case all at once. You can even see the battery status of all these devices on the iPhone.
The cameras are also significantly improved from the previous generations. The 12-megapixel dual cameras are a combination of f/1.8 aperture wide angle lens and f/2.8 aperture telephoto lens. With new color filters and deeper pixels, you can shoot photos and videos at a higher quality than before.
A new feature called Portrait Lighting was also introduced. It intelligently analyzes the photo in real-time as you take the picture and adjusts the lighting on the subject’s face, making for a photograph that looks like it was taken by a professional. You can also take selfies using this feature using the TrueDepth front camera.
The dual cameras have a gyroscope and accelerometer. The iPhone X, like the new iPhone 8 and 8 Plus, are tuned for AR capabilities, which means you get a better experience out of AR than in ordinary phones. Through the ARKit by Apple, developers have produced a variety of apps that can help you make more sense out of your surroundings. You can use AR to get details of players on the field or scan the sky for constellations.
While consumers will be able to pre-order the iPhone 8 and 8 Plus this Friday, those interested on the iPhone X will have to wait until October 27, the Guardian reports. Shipments will then begin on November 3. It is available in Space Gray and Silver colors and in two storage options: 64GB and 256GB. Prepare to spend at least $999 if you want it.

Murdochs face further delay in quest to buy Britain's Sky TV

0

British regulators have requested more time to review 21st Century Fox’s deal to acquire pay-TV service Sky.
British government officials have dealt a setback to 21st Century Fox’s pending deal to take over European pay-TV service Sky.
The takeover now will be examined by the Competition and Markets Authority, which will determine whether the acquisition gives the Murdochs, who control 21st Century Fox, too much influence over British media. The family already owns a number of major newspapers in the country, including the Times of London.
While the Office of Communications, Britain’s broadcast regulator known as Ofcom, has deemed that the Murdochs were found to be “fit and proper” owners of Sky, Culture Secretary Karen Bradley raised concerns regarding adherence to broadcast standards. Bradley also made the call on having further scrutiny of the deal’s impact on media concentration in Britain.
Inquiries by the Competition and Markets Authority can take up to six months to complete. The company said the $15-billion deal to acquire the 61% of Sky that it does not own is now scheduled to close in June.
Critics of the deal have feared that Sky TV would take on the characteristics of Fox News Channel, which mixes in right-wing partisan commentary with its reporting in the U. S.
Fox News also has been at the center of a sexual harassment scandal that has engulfed 21st Century Fox and has led to the firing of on-air talent and executives. The highly profitable unit also has been hit with a racial discrimination lawsuit from present and former black employees.
The company has investigated harassment claims since former Fox anchor Gretchen Carlson filed suit against the news organization’s founding chief executive, Roger Ailes, who died in May. Mindful of the British regulators, 21st Century Fox has severed ties with most of the employees who have faced allegations.
In a statement, 21st Century Fox said it was disappointed in the decision, citing Ofcom’s earlier comments that said there were no concerns about broadcast standards.
“We urge the secretary of state to take a final decision quickly, ” Fox said.
Sky, which broadcasts Premier League soccer in Britain and other European markets, is valued at $25 billion.
An earlier attempt to take over Sky was derailed by the 2011 phone-hacking scandal involving Murdoch’s British newspapers. The company was forced to close its News of the World tabloid, the chief offender in the investigation.

Rolling out Emmy red carpet, Stephen Colbert sings '588-2300'

0

The host of Sunday’s ceremony, a former Chicagoan, calls the familiar jingle “our Emmys red carpet rollout national anthem.”
LOS ANGELES — If this whole TV thing doesn’ t work out for Stephen Colbert, he has a bright future in carpet sales.
The first-time Emmy Awards host helped roll out the show’s ceremonial red carpet Tuesday at L.A. Live alongside telecast producers, saying that while it’s an honor to host the show, “it’s even more of an honor to be installing the carpet.”
Colbert also noted some of the rug’s features (“It’s a Stainmaster carpet. It’s indoor-outdoor.”) And he sang the familiar jingle of Northlake-based Empire Today, “588-2300 Empire, ” which he referred to as “our Emmys red carpet rollout national anthem, ” before the promotional rollout.
“I’ m glad there are cameras here because so few people know just how much manual labor is involved with hosting the Emmys every year, ” Colbert said. “If you like this, stick around because I’ m going to go re-grout the bathrooms right after this.”
No sooner had the Northwestern grad and former Second City performer finished unrolling the carpet than a pair of workers swooped in to roll it back up and haul it away. (The real red carpet used by celebrities on Sunday will be installed several feet away, in front of the Microsoft Theater.)
Colbert, who has won multiple Emmys for his work on “The Colbert Report” and “The Daily Show” and is nominated again Sunday for “The Late Show, ” described the Emmy ceremony as “an incredibly fun show to go to every year when you win.”
“If you lose, it’s an enormous waste of time, ” he said. “But everyone’s going to win this year. I’ ve talked with these guys and we want everyone to have fun, so everyone will win the Emmys this year. Spoiler. Spoiler alert.”
When asked how political the show could get, Colbert said the Emmys are about celebrating television, “and the biggest television star of the last year was Donald Trump.”
“The fact that he’s not nominated, it’s a crime, ” Colbert said. “It’s a high crime and a misdemeanor that you are not nominated, sir. Where’s the investigation of that? Where was James Comey on that?”
And does the host expect the president (and previous Emmy nominee) to tune into Sunday’s show?
“He might care about who wins the reality-show category, ” Colbert said. “ ‘Amazing Race’ is nominated, and that’s who he lost to every year for ‘The Apprentice.’ So he might want to see them go down. He might still have hard feelings. He seems like a guy who holds a grudge.
“He actually said in one of the debates with Hillary Clinton — she said like, ‘And then after he lost the Emmys, he complained they were rigged.’ And he goes, ‘I should have won.’ So he cares! You know he cares. We know you care.”

macOS High Sierra's release date locked in for September 25

0

Apple has at last revealed the macOS High Sierra release date: September 25.
During its iPhone 8 and iPhone X event – not on stage, but on its website – Apple has at last revealed the macOS High Sierra release date: September 25.
Apple’s latest version of macOS will be available for everyone to download through the Mac App Store in just two weeks, like so many versions of the operating system (OS) before it.
This, of course, is not the first time anyone has had access to the OS. High Sierra has been available to everyone that was interested through a public beta test that has seen several revisions since its reveal during WWDC 2017 and subsequent seeding.
Though, you had to jump through a few hoops (i.e. a special beta program sign-up) to get it, and the builds were never as stable as this final release will – or should – be.
Nevertheless, people have been clamoring for the latest version of macOS for a few key reasons. Well, beyond the fact that we’ ve all grown quite accustomed to a shiny new Mac computer OS every September or October.
The most notable of reasons for the hype is the long-anticipated debut of Apple’s brand new file system, dubbed the Apple File System or APFS. This new approach to cataloging and typifying files replaces Apple’s longstanding Hierarchical File System or HFS, and aims to make all Macs past, present and future that much faster for it, with faster metadata operation.
High Sierra also brings with it HEVC, or H.265, video compression to Mac, which will make for much stronger and faster video streaming, especially at 4K resolution, not to mention far less space eaten up by compressed video files that are locally stored.
Other major improvements include overhauling the Photos app with stronger sorting tools as well enhancements to Safari to thwart ad tracking – not to mention official support for external graphics cards and virtual reality. However, the latter is not set to truly launch until spring 2018.
While these are mostly tweaks and enhancements to the existing macOS platform, these changes could have far deeper impact on the whole Mac experience than most. That possibility alone is worth getting hype – just try to contain yourself until September 25.

Hillary's 'What Happened': Private Server 'a Dumb Mistake'

Hillary Clinton says it was a dumb decision to use her personal email server during her time at the State Department.
Hillary Clinton says it was a “dumb” decision to use her personal email server during her time at the State Department.
“It was a dumb mistake, ” the former Democratic presidential nominee wrote. “. .. It was like quicksand: the more you struggle, the deeper you sink, ” the L.A. Times reported.
She also wrote her “dumb” decision “got more coverage than any other issue in the whole race.”
“In fact, if you had turned on a network newscast in 2016, you were three times more likely to hear about those emails than about all the real issues combined, ” she wrote, per the L.A. Times.
