MIKA: Nokia's digital assistant meant for telecom operators, not general users

0

NewsHubDigital assistants are clearly more than just a fad with Microsoft actively working on Cortana , and Google making its Assistant the selling point of its flagship devices. It was reported earlier this month that Nokia was going to join the rather crowded race with a homegrown solution. However, it now appears that the company has no plans to rival these well-established players in the consumer space and instead, its assistant will be customized for telecommunications operators.
Nokia’s Multi-purpose Intuitive Knowledge Assistant ( MIKA ) is designed in a way that helps engineers save time and resources by making critical information available to them via voice- interaction powered by Nokia’s AVA cognitive services , and will be accessible to operators via the web and mobile agents. It also provides suggestions for problems it has seen in other networks with the help of many important documents and data sources available to it. Nokia details:
The head of Global Services at Nokia, Igor Leprince explained:
It is important to note that this is Nokia’s network division that works on technologies such as 5G , Internet of things, and not the Nokia brand licensed to HMD global that is slated to release highly anticipated smartphones later this year.

Paul Ryan’s Worst Week in Washington

0

NewsHubHere’s Paul D. Ryan in December 2015 on then-candidate Donald Trump’s proposed temporary ban on Muslims entering the United States: “This is not conservatism. ”
And here’s Ryan on Friday in the wake of Trump’s executive order restricting refugees from entering the United States and stopping entry of all visitors from seven predominantly Muslim countries : “President Trump is right to make sure we are doing everything possible to know exactly who is entering our country. ”
Hmmmm.
Ryan and other Republican leaders are explaining their seeming about-face on Trump’s ban by insisting that the executive order doesn’t target any particular religion and, therefore, doesn’t violate Ryan’s stated opposition to barring people from the United States on the grounds of their religious preference.
To which I say: Riiiiiiiiiight.
What’s really happened between Ryan’s first statement in December 2015 and his current reaction to the Trump executive order is that Trump got elected president. Back in late 2015, there was considerable doubt that Trump would even emerge as the Republican nominee. He did — and then he won the White House, running, unapologetically, on policies just like this one.
Over that time, Ryan found a way to make a sort-of peace with Trump, focusing on Trump’s apparent willingness to defer to congressional Republicans on major domestic-policy matters including the repeal and replacement of the Affordable Care Act, entitlement revision and tax restructuring.
The problem for Ryan, as the latest Trump executive order makes clear, is that Trump’s vision of conservatism is radically at odds with Ryan’s vision. Ryan spent much of last fall, after he publicly pronounced that he would not campaign for Trump, laying out a positive and inclusive vision of the GOP. Ryan was clearly hoping that when — not if –Trump lost, he himself could begin to emerge as the party’s primary leader and implement some of his ideas for a party desperate for direction.
Instead, he found himself sitting on a dais in Philadelphia on Thursday while Trump touted a protectionist view on trade and offered few specifics about how he proposes Congress fund his many priorities, including infrastructure spending and the construction of a wall along the country’s southern border.
This week drove home two painful realities for Ryan: 1) Trump is not going to sit back and let others run the country; and 2) Trump’s vision of what the Republican party is and should be is totally different from the speaker’s own.
For those two reasons and the prospect of four more years of President Trump, Paul Ryan, you had the Worst Week in Washington. Congrats, or something.

4 ways to avoid a 50 percent hit to your retirement savings

0

NewsHubThe tax breaks you receive in your retirement accounts don’t come for free. When you hit age 70 ½, you generally have to start withdrawing money from those accounts, even if you don’t want to.
These required minimum distributions, outlined by the IRS , can be a drag for the unprepared and can cost you as much as a 50 percent penalty if you fail to take them.
Fortunately, you have plenty of options that can provide you with some tax advantages, offer you a lifetime stream of income or help you leave a legacy to future generations.
You may not need your retirement money now, but you can use it later with a qualified longevity annuity contract, or QLAC.
In July 2014, the IRS and Treasury Department ruled that QLACs, a type of deferred income annuity, could be included in IRAs or other retirement accounts. Under current rules, investors are allowed to put up to $125,000 from a traditional IRA or employer-sponsored retirement plan, such as a 401(k), into a longevity annuity that pays out at a much later date, anywhere from age 70 ½ to age 85, with payments increasing the longer you wait.
The 30-year-plus bull market in bonds may be over. However, municipal bonds are attractive today, said Andrew Altfest, a certified financial planner and managing director at Altfest Personal Wealth Management in New York City.
“Following the election, [bond] investors got spooked when rates went up and by President Trump ‘s promise to reduce taxes, and municipal bonds sold off,” Altfest said. “Municipal bonds now stand as a relative value and are attractive even for individuals not in the highest tax brackets. ”
A retirement account distribution can go straight into your grandkid’s college fund.
You can also bundle up to five years of gifts into a one-time 529 plan contribution of up to $70,000 for single filers and $140,000 for married couples.
Use your RMD to make what is called a qualified charitable distribution, which allows you to donate all or part of your withdrawal without adding to your income.
You will need to have the trustee of your IRA directly transfer the money to a charity. You can give up to $100,000 per taxpayer, per year.
“For people who give to charity, qualified charitable distributions can satisfy their RMDs and in some cases better reduce their taxes than can direct cash donations,” Altfest said.

Q&A with Susan Fowler on Production-Ready Microservices

0

NewsHubThe Microservices.com Practitioners Summit is a practitioner-driven microservices conference that focuses on real-world applications of adopting microservices at scale. The Summit will be held in San Francisco on January 31, 2017. Speakers include microservices practitioners from Uber, New Relic, Lyft, PayPal, and Google.
Susan Fowler is an engineer at Stripe , the author of Production-Ready Microservices , and will be speaking at the Summit. While at Uber , Fowler worked on microservices standardization, as well as embedded within various business-critical teams to help make their services more reliable.
Prior to the summit, InfoQ met with Fowler to discuss the technical, business and cultural challenges of successfully implementing a microservices architecture.
InfoQ: Where do you see the ideals of a microservices architecture intersecting, and possibly conflicting, with the real-world systems at most organizations?
Susan Fowler : With regard to intersecting, I think that adopting microservice architecture is a natural step in the evolution of many software applications. Monorepos (monoliths) are extremely difficult to scale, and many engineering organizations can and do find themselves at a place where they reach scalability limitations (no concurrency, no partitioning, etc.). They also find that development velocity grinds to a halt, because deployment and development on a monorepo becomes incredibly difficult (from an organizational standpoint) once the application is large and there is a large number of engineers working on it. Once you get to this point, the easiest and most scalable way forward is to adopt microservice architecture.
This is precisely where most of the conflicts come from, too. Since adopting microservices is usually a “next step” in the evolution of a software system, most systems weren’t designed with microservice architecture in mind, and this creates a lot of problems, some of which are organizational in nature and others technical.
For example, on the organizational side, you end up with a lot of isolated and disjointed teams who work on their own microservices but don’t know anything about the rest of the system unless you plan for a lot of cross-team collaboration beforehand. You also end up with an institutionalized lack of trust between microservice development teams, who don’t always know that the other microservices that their own service depends on are reliable, stable, scalable, etc.
You may also find (as many companies do) that it’s difficult to staff and run a separate operations organization in microservice ecosystems, and developers will need to learn to take over operational duties for their microservices (something many of them may not be accustomed, trained, or prepared to do).
On the technical side, for example, you can end up with a lot of strange microservices that don’t make much sense and don’t communicate well with each other, because the boundaries between them and their functionality was never originally defined appropriately in the monolith that they were split from.
Another technical challenge I often see is that the infrastructure that underlies the microservices needs to be incredibly sophisticated for microservice architecture to be successful – something that many companies who are used to running monolithic applications aren’t used to or prepared for.
InfoQ: For a developer with experience working on traditional monolithic systems, what skills are the most important to learn to successfully transition to writing microservices?
Fowler : The most important thing for developers to learn when their organization is adopting microservice architecture are the operational skills that will most likely be required of them. In monolithic applications, it’s relatively easy to separate the development of the application and the maintenance of the application, and split the dev vs. ops duties between two separate teams. In microservice architecture, this isn’t the case – often there will be dozens, hundreds, or thousands of microservices and, consequently, microservice development teams, and dual-staffing each of these teams with both developers and ops engineers doesn’t make any organizational sense. Furthermore, microservice architecture allows devs to move so quickly that there are very few technical justifications for having operations engineers run the services – the devs will be the engineers who know it best, and they’ll be able to run it best.
InfoQ: Along with new skills for developers, what cultural or organizational changes need to occur to support microservices?
Fowler : A really great question, and one that honestly requires a very long answer (which my book Production-Ready Microservices is all about!). The single most important thing that an engineering organization needs to do is to build up very stable, reliable, and sophisticated application platform infrastructure (layer three in the four-layer model of microservice architecture ).
InfoQ: A successful MSA requires a significant level of infrastructure, as described in your blog post about The Four Layers of Microservice Architecture. While a single microservice is not very useful, every system has to start somewhere. How can organizations justify the overhead necessary to transition legacy systems to microservices?
Fowler : I think that most small companies wouldn’t necessarily benefit from adopting microservice architecture, and I don’t think that most companies should break their legacy systems into microservices.
There are several cases in which microservices work really, really well. First, if the application or system is a bit complex, but very clear boundaries can be drawn between its various functionalities, then splitting it into microservices isn’t that painful of a process (provided that, as you mentioned, the required infrastructure can be put into place). I think that this is a very uncommon scenario, however.
The second scenario is the microservices story that I hear from the majority of engineers and companies: an application reaches a critical point where it is no longer scalable, its scalability limitations have introduced severe performance and stability problems, it is impossible to do any work on the application, and developer velocity has ground to a halt. In this incredibly common scenario, justifying the additional infrastructure work necessary for microservices is a no-brainer – either the infrastructure gets built, or the application won’t be able to scale in the future.
