Feinstein Urges Trump Not to Move U. S. Embassy to Jerusalem, Despite Voting to Move Embassy to Jerusalem

Democratic Sen. Dianne Feinstein (Calif.) on Tuesday castigated the idea of moving the U. S. embassy in Israel from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, saying it would be a “terrible decision” despite previously voting for the embassy move to take place.
“Reports indicate the president will move the U. S. embassy in Israel from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem,” the California senator tweeted. “I wrote him last week to explain why that would be a terrible decision.”
In an attached letter to Trump dated Dec. 1, Feinstein wrote that moving the embassy would “spark violence and embolden extremists on both sides of this debate.”
The California Democrat stressed that the U. S. must remain neutral in the debate over Jerusalem’s status, and that moving the U. S. embassy there or recognizing the city as the capital of Israel would “undermine any remaining hope for a two-state solution.”

— Sen Dianne Feinstein (@SenFeinstein) December 5,2017
Feinstein’s tweet came on the same day that President Donald Trump told Israeli and Arab leaders that he plans to recognize Jerusalem as Israel’s capital and move the embassy there. Trump is expected to announce his decision on Wednesday.
Moving the U. S. embassy to Jerusalem would be in line with a law that Congress passed in 1995 requiring “the relocation of the United States embassy in Israel to Jerusalem.” The measure, which also called for the U. S. to recognize the city as the undivided capital of Israel, passed the Senate by an overwhelming 93-5 margin.
Among the senators who voted for the initial Jerusalem Embassy Act was one Dianne Feinstein .
Feinstein actually played a key role in getting the bill passed by inserting a provision that would allow the president to issue a waiver to delay the embassy move six months at a time, if the president determined it was in the U. S. national security interest.
Feinstein’s move led 10 additional Democratic members to support the bill, giving it a veto-proof majority.
Every president since then has consistently used the waiver authority to hold off moving the embassy. After Trump signed one such waiver in June, the Senate voted 90-0 on a resolution marking the 50th anniversary of Jerusalem’s reunification and calling for the embassy to move.
One of the senators who voted for the resolution, which reaffirmed the Jerusalem Embassy Act and “call[ed] upon the president and all United States officials to abide by its provisions,” was Dianne Feinstein .

Today at its Snapdragon Technology Summit, Qualcomm announced the Snapdragon 845 Mobile Platform, although it provided very few details about the chipset besides that it will be 10nm.
Today, Qualcomm held its Snapdragon Technology Summit in Hawaii. There were announcements of new Windows on ARM PCs from HP and ASUS, along with promises of Always Connected PCs from AMD. Qualcomm wrapped up the keynote by showing off its next flagship Mobile Platform, the Snapdragon 845.
While it brought on stage partners like Samsung, who the company partnered with the develop the chip, details are scarce. As with the Snapdragon 835, it will be 10nm; in fact, Qualcomm boasted today that it got to 10nm before Intel did.
It should also include the new Snapdragon X20 modem, which can achieve downlink speeds of up to 1.2Gbps, along with uplink speeds of up to 150Mbps. Qualcomm also said that 5G devices will be arriving in early 2019, so next year’s flagship chip may have the Snapdragon X50 modem.
The Snapdragon Technology Summit isn’t over yet though, and Qualcomm will be holding another keynote tomorrow, where it will reveal the full specs of the new chipset.

Did you hear that? The sound of blaring trumpets? It’s the Star Wars theme song, and it’s going to be the soundtrack to this Christmas, as Episode VIII, The Last Jedi steamrolls into theaters like the movie empire it is. While the holiday season has now bowed down to Disney’s Lucasfilm as the Supreme Leader in entertainment for three years running, it’s been a while since their opening salvo, Episode VII, The Force Awakens was on the big screen. So before you head to see The Last Jedi, let’s review with our Star Wars: The Force Awakens recap.
But first: Once upon a time….
There was a young boy named Anakin, son of Shmi Skywalker. Born into slavery, he was freed by two Jedi, Qui-Gon Jinn and Ben “Obi-Wan” Kenobi, who declared the boy “the chosen one.” The latter attempted to train Anakin himself, but failed miserably. The young man did everything he shouldn’t, including secretly marrying Senator Padmé Amidala of Naboo. Anakin then joined with the Dark Side and Emperor Palpatine, and slaughtered all the Jedi. His fight with Obi-Wan left him injured to the point that he had to wear a life support suit, and became known as Darth Vader.
Meanwhile, despite it being far in the future with amazing technology, Padmé died in childbirth. Her twins, Luke and Leia, were hidden away from their father, one raised the daughter of a senator, the other the son of a farmer. They found each other anyway, via some plans in an R2 Unit, that were stolen by the cast of a completely different movie, an aging Obi-Wan and a smuggler named Han Solo (who Leia later married.) Together, they joined the rebellion, defeated Darth Vader and the Emperor, and brought down the Death Star and the empire.
When we rejoin the story, it is thirty years later, and once again, there is a rebellion (now a “Resistance”), smuggling plans, now in a BB-8 unit (the R2 Unit being currently non functional), and a pilot named Poe Dameron who has just been captured. But one Storm Trooper, Finn, seems really not ok with his whole “evil peon” lifestyle. In order to escape, he frees Poe and together they flee.
Down on Jakku, there’s a young woman named Rey NoLastName who makes her living as a junk peddler, harvesting parts from old star cruisers and living in other random space props left lying around after the first six movies ended. And she’s just made friends with an odd little unit that calls itself BB-8.
Finn wakes up to see Poe is gone from their crashed capsule, and assumes him dead. He stumbles into town, only to find the BB-8 unit and Rey. They get chased by Storm Troopers, and in their rush to get away, they wind up jumping in a pile of space junk that just so happens to be the Millennium Falcon, Han Solo’s old ship.
Rey and Finn don’t get to be escaped long before Solo and his old pal Chewie come grab their ship. (And then have to run for it when several people they owe money to turn up as well.) With Solo’s arrival, BB-8 reveals his stolen data: it’s a map to find Luke Skywalker.
Meanwhile, under a new Dark Lord emperor named Snoke, we meet Kylo Ren, the son of Han Solo and Leia, and all around wannabe Darth Vader. He and his pal Hex are rebuilding the empire as “the First Order.” And they’re plenty mad about losing that BB-8 unit.
Han takes Finn and Rey to meet Maz Kanata, with the plan to get a new ship, and offload Finn, who has decided to make like Southwest Airlines and get away. These plans fail completely, since spies report their arrival. But before the First Order lands on their heads and destroys Maz’s abode, Rey accidentally finds Luke’s lightsaber, and sees visions of their pasts.
Kylo Ren, it turns out is having a good day. First he takes the Starkiller base on a test run and randomly destroys a few planets full of extras, and Doctor Who ‘s companion Martha Jones. Then, though he fails to get the BB-8 unit, he does capture Rey, who it turns out is the more valuable target.
Everyone else gets rescued by the Resistance team, which flies in and takes them home. We finally get a Han and Leia reunion, and learn Poe survived, before everyone heads back out to rescue Rey, take down the Starkiller Base and have a nice movie climax.
While Rey is doing the self-rescuing princess routine, Finn and Han and Chewie wander around the station cracking wise and putting Gwen Christie’s shiny Chrome Trooper in a garbage chute. When they finally all meet up, it’s Han vs Kylo time, and we learn Kylo’s real name is Ben (after Owi-Wan, awww.) The Aww is short lived though, since Kylo then murders his father.
The movie major moment comes as Poe leads the team to take down the Starkiller base while Rey and Kylo Ren have it out lightsaber-a-lightsaber, with Finn lying knocked out cold in the snow. Rey bests Ren, leaving him with a scar across his face to remember her by, and all our heroes fly away home.
The movie ends with Rey and company putting the two halves of the map together. (The first half was in that damned R2 Unit, go fig.) She flies out with Chewie, who is now *her* copilot in the Falcon, to find the mystery man, and learn more about these force sensitive feelings she’s been having. The movie ends as she walks up to him on his abandoned planet, and hands him his long missing lightsaber.
What happens now? We’ll find out when Star Wars: The Last Jedi arrives in theaters on Friday, Dec. 15,2017.

Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 release date and specs rumours

0

A new Snapdragon 845 is on the way, tipped for 7nm and might be exclusive to the Galaxy S9 at first. Get all the news here.
The end of the year is in sight and that means were thinking about what 2018 will bring in terms of tech. For smartphones, next-generation processors will bring improvements and many eyes are on Qualcomm for its upcoming Snapdragon 845. Here’s what we know about the Mobile Platform’s release date and specs.
Although the Snapdragon 835 is still a perfectly good SoC (system on a chip), consumers always want more. Its successor is on the way and some details have been leaked so can it beat the likes of the Apple A11 Bionic and Huawei’s Kirin 970?
Although the 835 was announced at CES in January 2017, it looks like the Snapdragon 845 will ‘arrive’ earlier. We say ‘arrive’ as although the new processor might be announced, it won’t actually be available in any devices until at least early 2018. Xiaomi was one company on stage confirming it will use the 845.
As expected, Qualcomm has confirmed the new generation of processor, or Mobile Platform, at its Snapdragon Summit. Although the chip was announced during the opening keynote along with some vague highlights, full details will be made available tomorrow 6 December.
Also find out about Window 10 running on Snapdragon including the first devices.
There’s some debate about the Snapdragon 845 specs with initial reports stating it will still use a 10nm FinFET manufacturing process like the 835. However, Android Headlines now reports that it will actually use a 7nm like other future chips are tipped to use.
The cited report states that moving to 7nm will mean performance gains of 25-35 percent. It also means a smaller size which could help devices like smartphones be smaller, or at least make room for things like a bigger battery.
Qualcomm has confirmed that Samsung will be the foundry for Snapdragon 845 as the “companies continue to work together to advance the silicon manufacturing process”.
Non-spec related news is that Samsung will supposedly have first dibs on the Snapdragon 845. Rumours suggest that all the initial 845 stock will be earmarked for the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9 Plus.
This could mean other handsets will have to wait longer to launch a phone with the Snapdragon 845 or go with an older chip, likely the 835.
Samsung did the same thing with the 835 earlier this year for the Galaxy S8 and it meant LG had to go with the Snapdragon 821 for the LG G6. Some reports suggest that LG will get the early stock next year though, so it’s all up in the air.
As usual, when more news or official details are available we’ll update this article.

Olympic ban sparks outrage in Russia

The head of Russia’s Olympic Committee, Alexander Zhukov, told the IOC on Tuesday that punishing clean athletes was “unjust and immoral”, with the move to ban Russia from the Winter Games sparking outrage in the country
“Punishing the innocent is unjust and immoral. This completely contradicts the basic Olympic principles,” he told the International Olympic Committee in Lausanne before the decision to ban Russia from the 2018 Olympic Games was announced.
“Everyone should answer for his sins.”
The IOC banned Russia from the 2018 Games over state-sponsored doping, but said some Russian athletes will be allowed to compete under strict conditions.
Speaking to reporters afterwards, Zhukov did not immediately say whether Russia would take part in the games.
“We will have to discuss this decision,” he said.
Officials are expected to address the issue on December 12.
Figure skating coach Tatiana Tarasova speaks to the media on December 5,2017 in Moscow, after the International Olympic Committee announced the decision to ban Russia from 2018 Winter Olympics
Maxim ZMEYEV, AFP
The Kremlin did not release an immediate reaction.
But all eyes will be on President Vladimir Putin on Wednesday when he is scheduled to speak to his supporters during a planned event.
Putin said in October that both a blanket ban and allowing Russia to compete under a neutral flag would be “humiliation for the country.”
The IOC decision sparked outrage in Russia, with many saying the country was humiliated and others suggesting to boycott the games.
Deputy speaker of Russian parliament’s lower house, the State Duma, Pyotr Tolstoy said that Russia should boycott the Games altogether.
“They are humiliating the whole of Russia through the absence of its flag and anthem,” he said in televised remarks.
Russian foreign ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said she was with the country’s athletes in spirit.
“Does it hurt? Very much,” she said on Facebook.
“Will we survive? Yes.”
President of the Russian Bobsleigh Federation Alexander Zubkov described the decision to ban Russia as “a punch in the stomach.”
Lawmaker Irina Rodnina, who is a Soviet figure skating legend, apologised for not being able to protect Russian athletes. “How they are afraid of us,” Rodnina tweeted. “Sorry guys.”
Tatyana Tarasova, a prominent Russian figure skating coach, said the IOC decision was “absolutely unjust.”
Winter jackets with an inscription reading “Russia” are displayed at BOSCO store in central Moscow on December 4,2017
Mladen ANTONOV, AFP/File
“This is simply the murder of our national sport,” Tarasova told AFP in an interview.
The IOC announced the decision after examining evidence of state-sponsored doping over several years that reached a high-point at the Winter Olympics hosted in Sochi, Russia, in 2014.
Nations have in the past been barred from taking part in the Olympics, notably South Africa during the apartheid years, but none has ever been handed a ban over doping.

Duke University student arrested protesting GOP tax rewrite

0

A Duke graduate student got arrested while protesting tax legislation outside U. S. House Speaker Paul Ryan’s office on Tuesday.
A Duke University Ph. D. student was among nine people arrested Tuesday outside U. S. House Speaker Paul Ryan’s Capitol Hill office suite in Washington, D. C., as they protested a tax-rewrite that could hit graduate students in the pocketbook.
Laura Jaramillo was detained by police after she and other protesters organized by the Service Employees International Union unsuccessfully demanded to meet with the Wisconsin Republican to discuss a bill that could, if the House gets its way, sharply raise the tax liability of many master’s- and Ph. D.-level students.
“They shut us down pretty quickly,” said Jess Issacharoff, who like Jaramillo is a Ph. D. student in Duke’s literature program. “It does seem Paul Ryan was not interested in hearing from the people this bill would affect.”
Jaramillo and Issacharoff made up the Duke contingent in a protest that also included students and supporters from universities in Missouri, Illinois, New York, Georgia, California and the District of Columbia.
It targeted a provision in the House bill that would repeal the present deductability of the tuition remissions that have long figured in the financial aid Duke and other universities offer graduate students who take on teaching or research duties.
A slot in a graduate program in such schools typically comes with a cost-of-living stipend, which is taxable income, and a tuition remission or waiver, which isn’t. At private universities like Duke the tuition waiver can approach $60,000 in value.
If both are taxable, a student’s annual liability to the U. S. Internal Revenue Service would jump sharply.
But as UNC system President Margaret Spellings pointed out in last week in a Chronicle of Higher Education article, “you can’t pay taxes with a waiver.” That takes cash, and the stipend could well be a student’s only source of it.
A tuition remission is “certainly not income because we never see it,” Issacharoff said.
Opponents of the House tax-bill provision fear that many graduate students could be forced to abandon their studies if it becomes law. That has implications not just for the accessibility of an advanced education, but for “the kind of people who are going to be teaching future generations,” she said, adding that graduate school could become a province “restricted to people who are already wealthy.”
The U. S. Senate’s competing tax rewrite would preserve the tax-exempt status of tuition remissions, but it’s not clear the Senate will prevail in negotiations with the House on a compromise bill. Republicans in both chambers and President Donald Trump all see a tax rewrite as a key legislative priority.
Tuesday’s protest in a hallway of the Longworth House Office Building in Washington resembled the “Moral Monday” civil disobedience sit-ins that have been a regular feature of N. C. General Assembly sessions this decade.
But it appears from media reports that Ryan’s Congressional office has become a frequent protest target in its own right, with encounters occurring the last few months over causes ranging from immigration to healthcare .
Duke’s chief spokesman, Vice President for Public Affairs and Government Relations Michael Schoenfeld, said university leaders had no comment on Jaramillo’s arrest.
The university is approaching the end of the fall semester. Graduate students wrapped up their semester’s classes on Friday and are now in a “reading period” that will last until exams start on Dec. 13.
As of 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday Jaramillo and her fellow arrestees had been released, officials said. The Duke Grad Union’s Twitter feed said both Jaramillo and Issacharoff were “safe and sound” and “happy to have been part of the fight.
The SEIU has been trying to convince Duke’s graduate students to join the union, though an organizing vote in the spring didn’t go its way. The union’s Duke members generally oppose the bill’s higher-education-related provisions and in that are joined by the university administration.

Pentagon inspector general uncovers ‘deficiencies’ in submitting criminal data to FBI

0

Between 2015 and 2016,31 percent of court-martial convictions were not submitted to the FBI
The Pentagon inspector general uncovered “serious deficiencies” when it comes to military officials and law enforcement organizations reporting criminal data to the FBI.
Investigators for the Inspector General found that between 2015 and 2016, nearly 31% of court-martials that would have prevented an individual from owning a firearm were not submitted to the FBI, according to a report published by the Pentagon watchdog group.
The same issue grabbed national attention in November after the Air Force admitted it did not provide the FBI with information that would have barred former airmen Devin P. Kelley from purchasing the firearm he used to kill 26 people inside First Baptist Church of Sutherland Springs in Texas.
The Defense Department Inspector General is separately investigating why the FBI was unaware of Kelley’s domestic violence conviction.
Kelley in 2014 was sentenced to a year in prison and handed a bad conduct discharge following a court-martial conviction, which should have prevented him from buying a weapon.
In reviewing the 2,502 convictions handled during the same time period, the Defense Department Inspector General additionally found the Army, Air Force and Marine Corps did not submit fingerprint cards to the FBI in 24 percent of the cases. Officials in all branches also failed to turn over final reports for 780 convictions in felony-level cases.
The Army topped the others, with 262 missing fingerprint cards and 385 missing reports. It’s followed by the Navy and then the Marine Corps, with the Air Force rounding out the list.
There is nothing in the report to suggest why the information was mishandled by military officials and law enforcement organizations.
“Our report again identified serious deficiencies throughout the DoD in reporting criminal history information to the FBI,” Principal Deputy Inspector General Glen Fine said in a statement to The Hill .
“It is critical that the DoD fully implement our recommendations to correct pass deficiencies and prevent future lapses in reporting.”

Juni 2018 in Canastota im Bundesstaat New York statt.
