VIDEO: ‘My God Protected Me,’ Says Man Who Shot Texas Church Killer

0

The man who came face-to-face with a madman who killed 26 in a church says God gave him the skills he needed to stop more deaths.
“I’m no hero. I’m not,” Stephen Willeford told 40/29 News reporter Joshua Cole in a video interview on Monday. “I think my God, my Lord, protected me and gave me the skills I needed to do what needed to be done.”
“I just wish I could have gotten there faster,” Willeford said in an emotional interview. “I didn’t know. I didn’t know what was happening.”
Willeford told Cole the experience was surreal. “I was scared,” he said. “It was surreal to me–it couldn’t be happening.”
After hearing the “pop pop pop” sound that was all too familiar to a former NRA instructor, Willeford said he grabbed his rifle and quickly loaded rounds into his magazine. When he stepped out onto the street, he saw a man wearing all black, a tactical helmet, and a ballistic vest.
“I kept hearing the shots, one after another, very rapid shots – just ‘pop pop pop’ and I knew every one of those shots represented someone, that it was aimed at someone, that they weren’t just random shots,” Willeford explained. “He saw me and I saw him.”
He said he took cover and did what he had to do.
Texas officials reported in a press conference Monday night that Devin Patrick Kelley, the killer of 26 in the First Baptist Church of Sutherland Springs, was struck by Willeford’s gun fire two times–once in the torso and once in the leg.” He then dropped his rifle, got in his car, and fled the scene before he could shoot any other people who were outside the church.
Willeford then stopped a passing neighbor and asked for help. “That guy just shot up the Baptist church,” he told the driver. He climbed in the car and together, they took off in pursuit of the deranged killer.
They eventually caught up to Kelley’s SUV shortly before he crashed into a road sign. They later learned Kelley shot himself in the head after calling his father.
Willeford and his companion shouted at Kelley to get out of his truck. There was no movement.
Willeford’s family has lived in the unincorporated Texas community of Sutherland Springs for four generations. Many of those who died or were wounded were friends of his.
He says he is not a hero–others are sure to disagree.

Bargaining chip? China seen closely scrutinizing Qualcomm, Broadcom deal

0

A potential mega-merger between chipmaker Broadcom Ltd (AVGO. O) and U. S. rival Qualcomm Inc (QCOM. O) is likely to face stern scrutiny in China, antitrust lawyers say, amid a strategic push by Beijing into semiconductors.
SHANGHAI (Reuters) – A potential mega-merger between chipmaker Broadcom Ltd ( AVGO. O) and U. S. rival Qualcomm Inc ( QCOM. O) is likely to face stern scrutiny in China, antitrust lawyers say, amid a strategic push by Beijing into semiconductors.
Broadcom made an unsolicited $103 billion bid for Qualcomm on Monday, aimed at creating a $200-billion-plus behemoth that could reshape the industry at the heart of mobile phone hardware.
But Chinese regulatory approval could be a hold-up. Beijing and Washington have sparred over technology deals, including in chips, with the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States (CFIUS) knocking back a number of takeovers involving Chinese firms this year.
The thorny topic is likely to come up when U. S. President Donald Trump visits China this week – with Qualcomm executives in tow.
The merger would face a lengthy review from the anti-monopoly unit of China’s commerce ministry, due to strategic concerns, the huge size of the deal and because Qualcomm has come under fire before in the country over competition concerns.
“This is a critical industry for China and Qualcomm has been fined by the Ministry of Commerce (Mofcom) before so it’s on its radar,” said Wendy Yan, Shanghai-based partner at law firm Faegre Baker Daniels.
Qualcomm agreed to pay a record fine of $975 million in China in 2015 to end a probe into anti-competitive practices related to so-called “double dipping” by billing Chinese customers patent royalty fees in addition to charging for the chips.
China is making a major push to develop its own semiconductor industry under local champions such as Tsinghua Unigroup and Fujian Grand Chip Investment to help cut reliance on global operators including Qualcomm, Samsung Electronics Co Ltd ( 005930. KS) and Intel Corp ( INTC. O).
Beijing’s push adds a political edge to the case.
“(Mofcom) will consider industry security for the whole country, as the semi-conductor industry has strategic importance to China,” a second Shanghai-based antitrust lawyer said, asking not to be named because Qualcomm was a client of his firm.
China chipmaker rivals could also raise concerns about the deal, he added, putting pressure on Mofcom’s Anti-Monopoly Bureau to act. The most likely outcome would be restrictions on the deal rather than it being blocked, he said.
Firms pursuing major takeovers must notify China before closing a deal if the merging companies’ combined global turnover in the previous year exceeded 10 billion yuan ($1.5 billion) or their combined China income exceeds 2 billion yuan – both easily hit in this case.
Mofcom did not immediately respond to a faxed request for comment. INDUSTRIAL POLICY
The Shanghai-based antitrust lawyer said the size and complexity of the deal – and potential sensitivities – meant it would likely have to go through all three phases of Mofcom’s merger approval, on paper a 180-day process.
While Broadcom and Qualcomm have little overlap, the firms are looking to complete a $5.5 billion purchase of Brocade Communications Systems Inc ( BRCD. O) and a $38 billion acquisition of NXP Semiconductors NV ( NXPI. O) respectively.
Mofcom approved the Brocade acquisition with conditions earlier this year with after a five-month investigation.
Qualcomm declined to comment.
“We expect China, as with other countries, will welcome this deal as a solution to the double-dipping issue, and will find there are no significant issues beyond this,” a Broadcom spokeswoman said, referring to the patent charging issue.
Last week, Broadcom CEO Hock Tan said the company would move its headquarters to the United States from Singapore, citing Trump’s efforts to improve business conditions and reforming tax. Trump praised the move, calling Broadcom “one of the really great, great companies.”
“Mofcom will be motivated by the government to look very closely not just from a competition perspective but also from a broader industrial policy perspective,” said another Beijing-based antitrust lawyer involved in similar transactions.
The lawyer, who asked not to be named due to the sensitivity of the matter, said Beijing had been making a big push in the area including with deals to buy international firms – some successfully and some which had hit obstruction.
“You should expect Mofcom will take a very, very close look at this transaction,” he said.
Mofcom has been flexing its muscle more on global deals over the last few years, lawyers say, including putting restrictions on a deal between Dow Chemical and DuPont earlier this year.
However, blocking deals outright was a rare step for Mofcom, especially when Chinese companies were not directly involved, several Chinese lawyers said. Instead, the firms may be asked to sell certain business units or make pledges to Chinese partners as conditions for it going ahead.
“This case will be subject to more scrutiny from the Chinese authorities (than normal),” said Faegre Baker Daniels’ Yan. “I think it’s quite likely the deal will be subject to some restrictions from Mofcom.”

Saudi Arabia's Game of Thrones: Who got caught in the widening corruption crackdown?

A billionaire investor, sitting Cabinet members and the prince in charge of one of Saudi Arabia’s three security services were among dozens of people swept up in an unprecedented purge that has accelerated a concentration of power in the hands of King Salman’s ambitious son and heir.
A billionaire investor, sitting Cabinet members and the prince in charge of one of Saudi Arabia’s three security services are among the dozens of people arrested in an unprecedented purge that has accelerated a concentration of power in into the hands of King Salman’s ambitious son and heir.
The sweep began over the weekend and was portrayed by Saudi officials as a crackdown on corruption, part of a plan by 32-year-old Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman to attract more foreign investment and reduce the country’s historic dependence on oil.
But the arrests also sideline potential rivals and critics from other branches of the royal family that have traditionally maintained a delicate balance of power.
Authorities have not formally identified those arrested. But here are some of the names that have been widely circulated in news reports and on Saudi social media accounts.
One of the world’s wealthiest men, Prince Alwaleed has amassed major holdings in major Western brands such as Citigroup, Twitter and Apple. He has also invested in real estate, hospitality and entertainment sectors.
It was not immediately clear why the prince had been targeted. Alwaleed has been publicly supportive of the crown prince’s attempts to woo investment, as well as a controversial military campaign in neighboring Yemen.
A favored son of the late King Abdullah, Prince Mutaib was once seen as a possible contender for the throne. He was arrested and replaced as head of the elite national guard, the only branch of the kingdom’s security services not already under the crown prince’s control.
Mutaib is accused of embezzlement, hiring ghost employees and awarding contracts to his own companies, including a $10-billion deal for walkie-talkies and bulletproof military gear, according to a report by the Reuters news agency.
As deputy governor and governor of Riyadh province between 2013 and 2015, Prince Turki played a key role in the launch of a multibillion-dollar rapid transit project for the Saudi capital that is slated for completion in 2019. He is now reportedly accused of taking advantage of his influence to award contracts to his own companies.
The presidency of Meteorology and Environment would appear to be a poor position for amassing a fortune. But Prince Turki reportedly owns nearly 200 classic cars, a business jet and opulent houses in Beverly Hills; Barcelona, Spain; and London.
As a high-ranking military official during the 1980s and 1990s, he was involved in arms deals with the military contractor BAE Systems that led to accusations of bribery and fines in Britain and the United States. Although he was never charged with wrongdoing, news reports at the time identified the prince as a major recipient of questionable payments made by the company to win contracts.
Prince Fahd, who comes from a minor branch of the House of Saud, was appointed deputy defense minister in 2013 after a navy career. He was replaced just four months later; no reason was given for the switch.
A veteran politician, Fakeih has served as the mayor of Jidda, minister of health and minister of labor.
As chief of the Saudi royal court, a post he held for nine years, Tuwaijri served as gatekeeper to King Abdullah.
A Cardinal Richelieu-like figure, he was seen by many as the de facto ruler in the country toward the end of the king’s life. But Abdullah’s successor, King Salman, removed him from office in 2015, apparently before Abdullah had been buried.
Some on social media, especially those who felt Tuwaijri had barred access to Abdullah, celebrated his reported arrest. But others called him a “loyal servant” and said his detention was proof that the crackdown was motivated by more than corruption.
Assaf served as the country’s finance minister for 20 years and continued to represent the kingdom at international events after he was replaced in 2016.
He has been involved in many of the kingdom’s top financial and business concerns, including the Saudi Fund for Development, and sits on the board of the state-run oil company, Aramco.
His arrest is likely to cause unease among investors in the run-up to the crown prince’s high-profile push to sell a stake in Aramco and has fueled speculation that the sale could be delayed.
A career naval officer, Adm. Sultan was appointed to lead the force in 2014. A decree announced his “sacking,” according to the official Saudi Press Agency. His removal was seen as part of the effort to consolidate power in the hands of Salman loyalists.

Meek Mill Asks ‘for Mercy’ Before He’s Sentenced to Two to Four Years in Prison for Violating Probation

Rapper Meek Mill asked ‘for mercy’ before he was sentenced to two to four years in prison for violating probation — details
Rapper Meek Mill was sentenced to two to four years in prison for violating probation on Monday, November 6.
A Philadelphia judge sentenced the 30-year-old (real name: Robert Rihmeek Williams) to a stint in state prison for violating probation twice in a 2008 drug dealing and gun possession case.
The Associated Press reports that Judge Genece Brinkley cited a failed drug test and a failure to comply with a court order restricting his travel. The judge added that she’s been trying to help the musician for about a decade but he just does whatever he wants.
“I gave you break after break and you basically just thumbed your nose at this court,” she said, according to Philly.com .
Mill reportedly addressed the judge for 40 minutes, insisting the violations were mistakes.
“I’m human. I’m not perfect,” he told Brinkley. “I’m asking for mercy. You gave me the ladder to do what I have to do to prevail in my struggle. I made it this far, I can’t really go back and start over.”
She was unmoved by his plea and ordered him to be taken into custody.
It’s not the first time Mill has had his probation revoked. In 2014, he was sentenced to three to six months in jail after violating his probation, and in February last year he was found guilty of a parole violation and was sentenced to 90 days of house arrest and an additional six years of probation.
There were also positive tests for narcotics numerous times, according to CBS Philadelphia, but prosecutors noted on Monday that he’s been off drugs since January.
In March this year, Nicki Minaj ‘s ex was arrested at an airport in St. Louis, Missouri, for assaulting two pedestrians. He was also arrested and charged with reckless endangerment in August after driving a motorcycle recklessly through the streets of NYC.
Mill’s lawyer said he plans to appeal the sentence.

MINIX: Intel's hidden in-chip operating system

0

Buried deep inside your computer’s Intel chip is the MINIX operating system and a software stack, which includes networking and a web server. It’s slow, hard to get at, and insecure as insecure can be.
Maybe you’re not paranoid. Maybe they are out to get you. Ronald Minnich, a Google software engineer, who discovered a hidden MINIX operating system inside “kind of a billion machines” using Intel processors, might agree with this.
Why? Let’s start with what. Matthew Garrett, the well-known Linux and security developer who works for Google, explained recently that, “Intel chipsets for some years have included a Management Engine [ME], a small microprocessor that runs independently of the main CPU and operating system. Various pieces of software run on the ME, ranging from code to handle media DRM to an implementation of a TPM. AMT [Active Management Technology] is another piece of software running on the ME.”
In May, we found out that AMT had a major security flaw, which had been in there for nine — count ’em — nine years.
“Fixing this requires a system firmware update in order to provide new ME firmware (including an updated copy of the AMT code),” Garrett wrote. “Many of the affected machines are no longer receiving firmware updates from their manufacturers, and so will probably never get a fix,” he said. “Anyone who ever enables AMT on one of these devices will be vulnerable.”
Quick! How many of you patched your PC or server’s chip firmware? Right. Darn few of you. That’s bad. It’s not every processor, but if you or your hardware vendor has “explicitly enabled AMT”, your machine is still vulnerable to attack.
The Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) has called for Intel to provide a way for users to disable ME. Russian researchers have found a way to disable ME after the hardware has initialized, and the main processor has started. That doesn’t really help much. ME is already running by then.
But Minnich found that what’s going on within the chip is even more troubling. At a presentation at Embedded Linux Conference Europe, he reported that systems using Intel chips that have AMT, are running MINIX.
If you learned about operating systems in the late ’80s and early ’90s, you knew MINIX as Andrew S Tanenbaum’s educational Unix-like operating system. It was used to teach operating system principles. Today, it’s best known as the OS that inspired Linus Torvalds to create Linux.
So, what’s it doing in Intel chips? A lot. These processors are running a closed-source variation of the open-source MINIX 3. We don’t know exactly what version or how it’s been modified since we don’t have the source code. We do know that with it there:
In addition, thanks to Minnich and his fellow researchers’ work, MINIX is running on three separate x86 cores on modern chips. There, it’s running:
MINIX also has access to your passwords. It can also reimage your computer’s firmware even if it’s powered off. Let me repeat that. If your computer is “off” but still plugged in, MINIX can still potentially change your computer’s fundamental settings.
And, for even more fun, it “can implement self-modifying code that can persist across power cycles”. So, if an exploit happens here, even if you unplug your server in one last desperate attempt to save it, the attack will still be there waiting for you when you plug it back in.
How? MINIX can do all this because it runs at a fundamentally lower level.
x86-based computers run their software at different privilege levels or “rings”. Your programs run at ring three, and they have the least access to the hardware. The lower the number your program runs at, the more access they have to the hardware. Rings two and one don’t tend to be used. Operating systems run on ring zero. Bare-metal hypervisors, such as Xen, run on ring -1. Unified Extensible Firmware Interface (UEFI) runs on ring -2. MINIX? It runs on ring -3.
You can’t see it. You can’t control it. It’s just humming away there, running your computer. The result, according to Minnich is “there are big giant holes that people can drive exploits through.” He continued, “Are you scared yet? If you’re not scared yet, maybe I didn’t explain it very well, because I sure am scared.”
What’s the solution? Well, it’s not “Switch to AMD chips”. Once, AMD chips didn’t have this kind of mystery code hidden inside it, but even the latest Ryzen processors are not totally open. They include the AMD platform security process and that’s also a mysterious black box.
What Minnich would like to see happen is for Intel to dump its MINIX code and use an open-source Linux-based firmware. This would be much more secure. The current software is only secured by “security by obscurity”.
Changing to Linux would also enable servers to boot much faster. According to Minnich, booting an Open Compute Project (OCP) Server takes eight minutes thanks to MINIX’s primitive drivers. With Linux it would take less than 17 seconds to get to a shell prompt. That’s a speedup of 32 times.
There’s no reason not to make this improvement. Minnich noted, “There are probably 30 million-plus Chromebooks out there and when your Chromebook gets a new BIOS, a new Linux image is flashed to firmware and I haven’t heard of any problems.”
Specifically, Minnich proposes that Intel, and AMD for that matter:
Over this, the new Linux firmware would have a userspace written in Go. Users would work with this Linux shell using familiar commands. This would give them a clear view of what was happening with the CPU and other system components.
At the same time, since UEFI is so easy to hack, he wants the “UEFI ROM reduced to its most basic parts”.
Will this work? It’s still early days, Minnich warned, and you may turn “your laptop into a brick”. But both for security and performance, it needs doing.
It’s neat that an obscure Unix like MINIX, thanks to Intel putting it on multiple cores in its chips, may be the world’s most widely used operating system. But it’s no way to run modern servers and PCs.

Piotr Duda: Z wolnych niedziel nigdy nie zrezygnujemy

0

Dwie niedziele to mydlenie oczu – mówi “Naszemu Dziennikowi” przewodniczący Solidarności Piotr Duda o projekcie dotyczącym ograniczenia handlu w niedziele.

SteelSeries Arctis 3 Bluetooth headset offers the best of both worlds for gaming and chat

0

This new gaming headset lets you use a 3.5mm wired connection and Bluetooth source simultaneously.
SteelSeries has introduced a new Arctis gaming headset with a clever trick up its sleeve: the ability to hear audio from both a Bluetooth source and a wired connection at the same time.
You can hook up the Arctis 3 Bluetooth to a PC (or Mac, or console) via the cable and hear audio from that source, while simultaneously connecting the headset via Bluetooth to your mobile device, and also hear the audio from that.
In other words, you can hear the sound from your game (from the 3.5mm wired connection), while, say, taking a call or engaging in a chat on an app installed on your phone (via the Bluetooth connection). Or you could stream music wirelessly over the Bluetooth connection for your own soundtrack to the game (while still hearing the in-game audio).
It’s a nifty little spin on the traditional gaming headset, certainly, and as well as the PC, as mentioned it’s compatible with consoles including the PlayStation, Xbox and Nintendo Switch .
As Brian Fallon, Audio Category Manager at SteelSeries, notes: “Bluetooth is incredibly useful for connecting wirelessly to mobile devices for chat and music, but as most gamers know, Bluetooth has too much latency for gaming. That is why this is a wired headset for gaming and Bluetooth for everything else.”
The Arctis 3 Bluetooth headset also benefits from ‘low-distortion’ speakers to keep audio crisp, along with a SteelSeries ClearCast bi-directional mic which is retractable for convenience, and eliminates background noise.
There has been some thought put into comfort levels, too, with ear cushions fashioned from an ‘AirWeave’ fabric, and a ‘ski goggle headband’ that’s designed not to get uncomfortable even for longer gaming sessions.
The headset is on sale now and retails at $130 (£134.99, around AU$170).

Apple and Samsung have had no shortage of legal disputes surrounding their various patents. From hardware to software and everywhere in between, the two tech giants have pretty much been in a perpetual state of lawsuits for years. Today does mark the end of one of the more high-profile disputes though.
The Supreme Court has decided not to hear an appeal to the patent infringement case surrounding Apple’s slide-to-unlock patent on mobile devices. The two have been battling on the topic since 2014 and have escalated it to higher courts numerous times.
Apple claimed Samsung infringed on the famous slide-to-unlock patent. Also included in the lawsuit is a patent for turning actionable information like a phone number into a link.
Apple came out on top in the initial ruling and Samsung was ordered to pay for infringing on the patents. Samsung then appealed the ruling two years later and it was overturned. The following year, Apple went to yet a higher court with an appeal and it was reinstated. After that, Samsung pulled out all the stops and appealed to the Supreme Court. Today, the Court decided not to hear that case, thus reaffirming Samsung’s obligation to pay Apple the $120 million settlement.
Samsung was not happy with the result, saying that Apple would be able to “unjustly profit” from the patent. Ironically, the lawsuit has dragged out for so long that nobody even uses slide-to-unlock anymore.
While $120 million is a lot of money, this is peanuts compared to earlier battles. Back in 2012,Apple won a $1 billion settlement against Samsung. The final amount will be closer to $400 million and will be decided in May.
