Papierosy w drewnianych balach. Cwany pomysł przemytników

0

Sprawa została przekazana do dalszego prowadzenia Izbie Celnej w Białymstoku.

South Korea joins China, asks Asian Games organizer to change hotel over Nanking Massacre denial book

0

NewsHubSAPPORO – South Korea has joined China in asking the organizer of the Asian Winter Games to change the hotel for its athletes due to a controversial history book placed in its guest rooms, the organizer said Wednesday.
The Korean Sport & Olympic Committee asked the organizer to find other accommodation than the Apa Hotel in Sapporo’s Minami Ward, following similar requests from the Chinese Olympic Committee and the Olympic Council of Asia, which sanctions the Asian Games.
The Apa Hotel places in guest rooms a book that denies the 1937 Nanking Massacre as well as the “forced recruitment of comfort women,” or women procured for Japanese military brothels before and during World War II. Many comfort women were from the Korean Peninsula, which was under Japanese rule before and during the war.
The South Korean committee made the request by phone and email Tuesday to the organizing committee of the winter sports event to be held in Sapporo and Obihiro in Hokkaido from Feb. 19 to 26.
In Sapporo, around 1,700 athletes and other Asian Games participants were scheduled to stay at the Apa Hotel & Resort, and approximately 350 at the Sapporo Prince Hotel.
The event organizer is now considering adding other hotels, it said.
The book placed in Apa hotel rooms, which was written by the company head, asserts that the Nanking Massacre was fabricated. China says more than 300,000 people were killed, while Japanese historians have estimated the number to range from the tens of thousands to 200,000.
The Apa hotel chain reportedly told the Winter Games organizer recently that it will remove the book from all guest rooms at its hotel in Sapporo for the duration of the games.

With the launch of the Mate 9 in the US in January, questions may arise as to whether you should purchase this handset now or wait until next month to see what LG and even Huawei might have in store at Mobile World Congress. Judging by the rumors and leaks, it appears that this could be a monumental year for smartphones, with a majority of handset manufacturers apparently pushing the limit when it comes to design and performance.
The Mate 9 can be purchased from a variety of retailers that includes B&H Photo Video, Newegg, Best Buy, and more.

Google Chrome for iOS is finally Open Source

0

NewsHubGoogle has announced that the code for Chrome on iOS has been moved into the Chromium open-source repository.
Chrome for iOS has always been kept separate due to the fact that it relies on the WebKit rendering engine rather than Google’s Blink engine. This is because of Apple’s constraint on browsers on iOS, requiring all of them to run on WebKit.
“For Chromium, this means supporting both WebKit as well as Blink, Chrome ‘s rendering engine for other platforms. That created some extra complexities which we wanted to avoid placing in the Chromium code base,” the blog added.
For Chrome users, there won’t be any major changes on the surface. Rather, Google explains that the speed of developing new versions of Chrome for iOS will be accelerated since tests can now be run with the entire Chromium community.

Logitech unveils revolutionary Spotlight Presentation Remote for PowerPoint, Keynote, and more

0

NewsHubMicrosoft PowerPoint or Apple Keynote presentations are often very boring, but unfortunately, they are a fact of life in the business world. If you have ever sat through a meeting that focused heavily on these slides, you have probably feigned interest and tried hard not to fall asleep. But why? Often, the data held on the screen is quite informative, but if the presenter is a bore, the presentation will suffer regardless. To make matters worse, with more and more employees working remotely, these presentations can be nothing more than slides with audio for some — those not physically in the room with the presenter can have a lesser experience.
Logitech decided to take a look at the deficiencies of these PowerPoint presentations, with the goal of creating a tool to improve both presentations and the presenters. True, presentation remotes are one such tool that can help, but that segment was very stagnant. Today, Logitech unveils the fruits of its labor — the Spotlight Presentation Remote. While the elegant device looks simplistic, you should not judge this book by its cover. It is a revolutionary tool for the business world that is chock full of goodness.
I’ve been fortunate enough to experience this device in advance — a demo by the company and the opportunity to try it myself. From the moment I held it in my hand, I knew it was special. The body is a solid piece of aluminum, with three buttons on the face. These can be customized for many thing, but for the most part, they are used for forward, back, and media.
Besides the aluminum, you will notice a plastic rectangle on the back — that is there to accommodate the wireless radios. After all, it would not work well if it was entirely aluminum. And boy does it ever work — it offers 100 feet of travel from the computer! This will also help with grip — especially with sweaty hands.
Besides physical buttons, the Spotlight Presentation Remote can detect movement — you can adjust volume, for instance, by holding a button and physically moving the remote up or down in the air. Yeah, you will look like a presentation rock star when doing this in front of an audience. The remote can also serve as a pointing device — you can move the cursor and do mouse clicks — allowing you to play an embedded video, for example.
One of the coolest features is the ability to vibrate. You see, you can set the remote to vibrate at certain intervals, letting you know when you are approaching your time limit. This way, you will know when to wrap it up. Over time, this should improve the presenter’s time management skills.
The real magic is the software. Available for both Windows and Mac, Spotlight has a special “highlight” feature that dims the screen except for a round overlay. It is sort of like holding a flashlight on something in a dark room. This is much superior to a laser pointer, as remote viewers can see it too. An on-screen magnifier can also be called up, allowing the presenter to increase the size of a focus. These features do not only work when presenting slides, mind you. It can be used system wide in any application, making it a great tool for training classes too.
Connectivity is handled in two ways — either a USB Type-A dongle, or Bluetooth. The dongle itself can be stored in the bottom of the device when not in use. When you want to charge the Spotlight, a USB-C port can be accessed by removing the aforementioned receiver dongle. Don’t have a USB-C cable or charger? Don’t worry. A Type-A to Type-C cable is included in the box. Also included is an elegant leather holster.
Speaking of battery, Logitech claims it can last 3 months on a full charge. If the battery does deplete, do not worry — a minute of charging will get you through the entirety of your presentation. This means you should never have anxiety over the battery.
If you want to buy the Logitech Spotlight Presentation Remote, it can be yours for $129 today. It can be had in three colors — gold, silver, and dark grey. For now, it will be sold exclusively at the Apple Store or from Logitech directly. It can be purchased at other retailers starting in March, although the silver color will remain an Apple Store exclusive.

Now Cisco can network your building systems

0

NewsHubThe latest network hardware from Cisco Systems gives new meaning to the words “light switch.”
The Catalyst Digital Building Series Switch is an Ethernet switch designed to link different kinds of building infrastructure over a network. It will be available worldwide in the second quarter. It uses Cisco’s enhanced version of PoE (Power over Ethernet) to run things like lights and cameras while collecting data about those devices over the same standard cable.
The switch embodies the merger of IT and OT (operational technology), one of the big enterprise trends that the internet of things is driving. The line is blurring between information systems like servers and building systems like lighting, heating, and physical security. The new technology could make buildings run better. It might also help to turn IT folks and facilities experts into a bit of both.
Cisco’s new switches can power all the lights in a building by themselves. Instead of being connected to the traditional AC power grid that feeds wall sockets, the lights will run off Ethernet cables from ports in the switch.
This wasn’t possible until LED lights became affordable for use in new buildings and renovations. LEDs use far less power than incandescent or fluorescent lights, and Cisco Universal PoE can carry 60 watts, double the power of standard PoE Plus. (Universal PoE is being considered as an IEEE standard.)
Running the lights off the network has several advantages, according to Cisco.
For the operations team, it’s easier to set up or modify an office because there’s no need for an electrician to pull electric wires out to each light fixture. In most developed countries, there’s also less need for inspections, because it does away with two potential fire hazards: those wires, and incandescent or flourescent lights, which get hot. Ethernet cables out to cool LED lights typically don’t need an inspection.
The switch can also power other building infrastructure, like security cameras, air valves in heating and air-conditioning systems, and badge readers. Cisco is working with partners that make these types of gear. The switch is designed to take the place of specialized, siloed networks for different building systems, said Sachin Gupta, vice president of product management for enterprise switching.
Though all these systems may be physically connected to the same network, Cisco’s DNA (Digital Network Architecture) platform makes it easy to segment them for security, Gupta said. A simple configuration step can prevent sending data from, say, the security cameras to the lights.
For the IT team, there’s a constant supply of data about how lights, cameras and other devices plugged into the switch are being used. The switch has built-in sensors to monitor the power consumption and health of everything plugged into its ports, and it collects information like whether anyone is in a room.
Those kinds of information, in turn, help operations people make the building more efficient and potentially more pleasant for those inside.
This also makes Cisco an integral part of a building’s infrastructure, potentially even more entrenched than the Cisco data networks in most enterprises’ wiring closets. But it doesn’t mean you need a network engineer just to get all the building parts connected and powered. There’s a smartphone app for that, which talks to the switch over Bluetooth.
“Without knowing networking, you can select what you’re trying to do , and you can test out that you’ve installed everything correctly,” Gupta said.

South Korea 'suspends visas' for Chinese teachers

0

NewsHubSEOUL: South Korea has stopped issuing new visas or renewals for Chinese teachers at Beijing’s Confucius Institutes in the country, an official and a report said Wednesday (Feb 1), with tensions growing over a controversial US missile system.
Hundreds of Confucius Institutes around the world promote Chinese traditional culture and language as part of Beijing’s soft power strategy. They have provoked controversy over issues of academic freedom at some Western universities.
The state-run network has dozens of branches in South Korea in partnership with local colleges.
But Seoul and Beijing are in an increasingly heated dispute over a plan to deploy the powerful US anti-missile system THAAD to the South against threats from nuclear-armed North Korea.
China fears it will undermine its own ballistic capabilities and has introduced a series of measures seen by Seoul as economic retaliation, including effectively barring K-pop stars from performing on the mainland.
Now Seoul’s immigration authorities have since December stopped issuing new visas or extending existing ones for Chinese teachers, Yonhap news agency said.
There are 22 Confucius Institutes in South Korea, the third-highest of any country following the United States and Britain, it said.
An official at Andong National University in the southern city of Andong – which hosts a Confucius Institute with seven Chinese instructors – confirmed the report.
“All E2 visas for new teachers to arrive have been rejected since late last year,” the official told AFP on condition of anonymity, referring to South Korea’s teaching visa.
The teachers have been formally employed and paid by the Chinese government, in violation of rules that require visa holders to be hired and paid by South Korean employers, said the official.
“The practice has somehow been tolerated for years… until recently,” said the official, adding it is the first time that Seoul has taken issue with it.
“Something like this never happened before,” she said.
The justice ministry was not immediately available for comment. An unnamed ministry official told Yonhap that there was “no motive” behind the latest move.

Trump’s Travel Ban Shouldn’t Be Controversial

0

NewsHubThere should be nothing controversial about the purpose of President Donald Trump’s executive order relating to travel to the United States, at least as reflected in the order’s title: “Protecting the Nation from Foreign Terrorist Entry into the United States.” Who would disagree that it is a core function of the United States government to protect us from foreign terrorism?
Contrary to what one would conclude from the ongoing protests, most of the substantive provisions of the order should be uncontroversial as well. The order calls for review of our immigration and border controls with an eye to assuring that we are getting the right information, institution of a uniform screening process (without regard to travelers’ nationalities), completion of a biometric entry-exit tracking system, suspension of the visa interview waiver program (again without regard to travelers’ nationalities), review of visa reciprocity agreements with other countries and public transparency of immigration data.
But it would be silly to think that even a few of the tens of thousands of protestors have actually read the executive order. They are part of the resistance that objects to every Trump nominee and every other executive order the president has issued, not to mention his orange hair.
Actually there are things in the order that warrant objection. For starters it is poorly drafted – it might get a C- in a law school legal writing class. It makes the bizarre assertion that the United States “should not admit those who do not support the Constitution.” Since when must citizens of other countries declare allegiance to the U. S. Constitution if they want to pay us a visit? The order failed to address the obvious question of its application to people already in transit – those inevitably caught by surprise upon arriving at U. S. airports. The order also failed to address the status of legal residents holding green cards. Some have suggested that this was a conscious decision to test the willingness of immigration bureaucrats to follow their leader, but it is so obviously contrary to the rights of green card holders that any competent lawyer would have insisted on a clearly stated exception.
Provisions that have drawn protestors’ ire are the 90 day ban on entries from certain countries (designated in earlier legislation signed by President Obama), the 50,000 cap on refugees allowed entry in 2017, the 120 day suspension of the U. S. refugee program and the indefinite exclusion of Syrian refugees. There is nothing unusual about suspending a program while it is under review, particularly if the review is motivated by a belief that the program may have flaws. The 50,000 cap on refugees is not as high as it was under Obama but is higher than it has been in the past. More troubling is the indefinite suspension of a refugee program that can sometimes spell the difference between life and death.
From the perspective of many protestors, the executive order is the work of anti-Muslim bigots. A more generous interpretation is that it is the work of amateurs. Either way at least five federal courts have intervened on grounds of unconstitutional discrimination, denial of due process or lack of executive authority. Had the administration bothered to consult with departments responsible for implementing the order, many of these problems probably would have been avoided.
There is no denying that President Trump is doing here and on other issues exactly what candidate Trump promised to do. But in a rush to fulfill campaign promises Trump is putting his long-term success at risk. His base will continue to support him, but the millions who voted for him as the lesser of evils will come to believe that they chose the wrong evil. And once all the executive orders are issued the President will discover that he needs a lot of help from Congress to deliver on most of his campaign promises. Republican members of Congress may have fallen in line after Trump’s election, but poorly conceived actions like the executive order on travel to the U. S. will test their loyalty. A few have already parted company with the Trump approach.
Even more republicans will join the opposition to a president whose executive actions seem to lack any regard for America’s history as a land of immigrants and refugees. Of course we should extremely vet refugees to assure that terrorists are not among them. But an indefinite suspension on refugees from Syria where good people face immediate threats to life and limb is simply not the American way. Surely our government can improve its terrorist filters without indefinitely closing our doors to people suffering at the hands of a tyrant.
There is much in the president’s executive order on travel to the United States that makes sense and will advance the purpose of reducing the risks of foreign terrorists on American soil. But there is just enough incompetence and heartlessness to assure that our divided politics will undermine the effort. Putting America first should always mean putting American values first.
